CC-NC licenses edit

Peter Dzubay, I saw your note above to JuTa. Files licensed under the CC-NC-BY-4.0 license and other similar non-commercial only licenses are not acceptable on Commons. Commons only accepts files that are free to use by anyone, anytime, for any purpose. In particular, a file's license must permit commercial use if you want Commons to host the file. See Commons:Licensing for details. —RP88 (talk) 05:24, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, RP88, I was just wondering why this is so. I have read the guidelines and I cannot understand why non-commercial images are not accepted- since Wikipedia is non-profit. If I, the creator of the image, would like to share it for use on Wikipedia using a license such as Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International, which is not accepted under current guidelines, why can't I do so? When used on Wikipedia, is the image generating any sort monetary compensation directly? If so, is there a way that I can license my images so that only Wikipedia can use my images? Thank you. ̃ Peter Dzubay

Peter, you are correct, the Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit, so Wikimedia Foundation projects (including, for example, Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia) could, in theory, make use of media available under non-commercial only licenses. However, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has specifically decided not to do so as they believe their mission to develop educational content is best accomplished if their content, including Wikipedia, is available to all re-users, even commercial re-users. —RP88 (talk) 00:43, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution.
