You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Explanation of derivatives

You've been citing this paper as the reasoning why you own the copyright to the images you've been uploading. I am not a copyright lawyer by any means, but I will try to explain to you why your interpretation is incorrect, and why that paper actually supports the Commons' deletion of your images.

Regarding derivatives, it states on page 2 that "The copyright in a derivative work covers only the additions, changes, or other new material appearing for the first time in the work. Protection does not extend to any preexisting material..." Regarding collective works, "In the case of a collective work containing preexisting work...the registration will only extend to the selection, coordination or arrangement of those works, not to the preexisting works themselves." In other words, what this means is that you don't get to compile together multiple copyrighted works that you don't own, and then release that work under whatever license you choose. You may own the copyright to whatever new materials you add to the work, or the compilation of the work, but you don't own the work in its entirety. The works you uploaded were mostly (if not entirely) combining multiple copyrighted works into one image, which is why your images have been deleted.

This situation is not at all like "a drawing based on a photograph". In the case of a drawing, the artist is creating his own work based on his visual interpretation of another. In the case of your images, you're taking exact copies of copyrighted works and placing them together. There is no "creation" of your own work, simply the compilation of others'. Does that makes sense?

I recognize that the commons policy is as you state. I think it's wrong but I will abide by the rules. I *think* I can make my case that my derivative work is allowed on wikipedia per the sites policies. Clearly I cannot and, will stop trying to, make the case here.
