Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Code issues in User:ProfesorFavalli/common.js

Hi ProfesorFavalli, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:ProfesorFavalli/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!
  1. ISSUE: line 10 character 91: Script URL. - Evidence: mw.util.addPortletLink('p-tb', 'javascript:importScript("MediaWiki:VisualFileChange.js");', 'Perform batch task', 't-AjaxQuickDeleteOnDemand');

Warning for incivility

[1]. Please do not call or imply that a user is "lying." In this issue, there is already a user blocked for incivility, and others are being watched for that. Please focus on the issue at hand, how the page is to be described. The goal is consensus, and accusing others of lying can make it impossible to find consensus. Thanks. --Abd (talk) 01:26, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Right. Favalli, your opinion about the image is welcome, not necessarily your opinion about other users. In the case in question, I don't see a "lie." A lie is a deliberate attempt to deceive, and it can be difficult to prove and is usually best avoided as an accusation unless (1) there is necessity, and (2) you can prove it. Lying on wikis like these is actually dangerous to wiki-health. What can be done, often, is to make false statements, believing them to be true or at least reasonably inferring them. Discasto, you appear to be encouraging ProfesorFavalli in his idea that the other user was lying by saying that one can get away with it.
ProfesorFavalli, sometimes people use "lie" to mean any false statement. That is not solid English usage. A "lie" is considered very, very wrong! "Liar" is an insult. People will frequently make false statements, and I've seen some people call them "lies." It never resolves disputes, because, in English, it attacks the person, not just the truth of the statement.
In this case, the article was almost certainly not on the "front page." It was on a different page. In fact, the image does not imply "front page," it was obviously a composite, with a kind of masthead that would never appear with such a short article as shown by the Embassy. The full page shown in the other file is not an image of the front page of a newspaper. Our image as published by the Embassy is a composite of elements found on the full page, that is clearly visible: the supposed "masthead" is from a list of performances, and the date is from a publication announcement below that. None of it is from the front page, nor does the Embassy claim that it was. They merely claim that: "In 1820 the Buenos Aires Government formally took possession of the Malvinas Islands. The Times of London reported the event without raising any protest or action by the British Government."
The description of the event by the Embassy is slightly biased, though not necessarily untrue. (It is biased because of what facts have been selected to report, and in interpretation: was Jewitt's action an act of that government, or was it his independent decision? The history appears to support the latter interpretation; he may have had prior discussions, but his subsequent behavior did not show that this was his explicit mission. Still, his act was an "act of sovereignty.")
The event was reported in the Times. The British government, as far as we know, did not respond at all. And all that means very little, legally. It's an element. Much more relevant is the future of the region. Consider this: if we cannot agree here, on something as trivial as the description of a file, how could we expect peoples and governments to agree? And if they do not come to actual agreement, people will continue to suffer and sometimes even die violently.
Let's set an example! This is a file, this is what it shows, and this is where it came from, and, if we agree, it can have links to articles where much more information can be found. And then, on each project, users may negotiate neutral coverage, and it is not our business to judge the various language projects. We just host free images.
Discasto, as Favalli may have some difficulty understanding English, please explain this to him as well. Thanks. --Abd (talk) 14:46, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Pufff

A veces lo de "defend each other funciona :-P --Discasto talk | contr. | es.wiki analysis 09:55, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

Hello ProfesorFavalli, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
