[1] Did you see the warning message? I'm just checking since you're the first person to trip the filter after I enabled it. I'm curious as to why you saved it anyway? It doesn't look like a false positive since the category is outside the <noinclude> tags. Did you miss the warning and think you hit Preview instead of Save or something (happened to me before)? Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Special:AbuseFilter/8

Discovered a bug. It's actually a problem with the extension (or MediaWiki) itself but something to be mindful of. I don't think it's an issue yet here since the false positive rate is practically 0, but it's something to watch for (with any filter). We may need to add a rule to exclude edits to pages that already had test edits (using added_lines instead of new_wikitext should be enough, but apparently that doesn't work right). I'm not adding it yet if we don't really need it for performance reasons. Rocket000 (talk) 20:25, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Ah yeah, that should be improved. Maybe Mike.lifeguard, who originally wrote the filter (and who also seems to have a good understanding for such things) is able to help here; the filter is public, so he should also see it. Hi. To me, the recent to IP edits on the above page look more like experimentation. Currently, it's a bit too easy to remove image annotations, but this is something that will change in the next version. Thus I'd be glad if you'd unprotect the page. Keep in mind, this is a wiki. I don't think that this was just some testing. The edits have been made on six different days, that's very uncommon for simple testers. However, you're right that six months is too long, and thus I reduced the protection to 2 months. Let's hope the new version will reduce the inappropriate image notes. There isn't any relation between most of these IPs. It's just the description page of a frequently viewed image. Remember, not all IPs are evil and the idea to exclude IPs from editing image notes was dismissed. -- User:Docu at 21:58, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Right, not everyone is evil, but if the image is so frequently used that several Ips are testing/vandalizing there then I don't see any problem with protecting it. I had a moment to look again on {{Creator}}. I created Template:Creator/test template page and used Creator:Stefan Bałuk as a test page. I fixed a problem with {{{Homecat}}} and I run into some problems with birth-year and death-year categories, so I might give up on them for time being.  Done, furthermore I've found out the reason why it didn't categorize with your code: If you put the code [[Category:{{ISOdate|2008-09-21|f=Y}} births]] in Special:ExpandTemplates, then this will give the following: [[Category:<!-- Empty, return nothing at all --> 2008<span style="display:none">(<span class="dtstart">2008</span>)</span> births]]. The HTML comment comes from {{I18n month}} and the CSS code from {{Date}}. Hope that helps. Please also remember to update Template:Creator/doc. thanks, I never knew about Special:ExpandTemplates that could be quite useful. So to get the date categories one has to either modify {{I18n month}} and {{Date}} templates so {{ISOdate}} returns clean year without comments or CSS. I've just checked out that the HTML comment is not a bad thing (just try out using [[Category:<!-- -->Category]] in the sandbox and it will work). Kalligraphie

Hallo EvilIP, du hast am 15.07. in der Galerie Kalligraphie den "Merge"-Vorschlag gesetzt. Jede Verbesserung in den Commons-Kategorien ist sehr sinnvoll, denn da liegt so manches im argen. Allerdings, in diesem speziellen Fall erscheint mir der Merge zweier so unterschiedlicher Galerien nicht hilfreich; die eine hiesse besser 'Chinese Calligraphy', sie wird aber nur von dem deutschen Artikel angelinkt. Die andere Galerie zeigt einige Bilder von Kalligrafien des 12. bis 19. Jhdt. Beide zu mischen nützt IMHO kaum; eher wäre es sinnvoll, die 197 Bilder in der Category:Calligraphy in weitere handliche Subkategorien einzuordnen.

Ich gebe ganz offen zu, dass ich auf dem Gebiet ein Laie bin und ich das damals nur mit {{Merge}} versehen habe, da ich keinen Sinn darin sah, zwei Gallerien zu der selben Sache unter zwei verschiedenen Namen zu haben. [3] Only if you are expecting a lot of edits to the doc. Everything in the noinclude tags is ignored when transcluded. This stopped being an issue a couple years ago but people still move things to a separate page for this reason (which is annoying IMO when you can't update the doc at the same time as the template, it also creates twice as many pages, is more to watch, etc.), so I'm just letting you know in case this what you meant. Something like this template really doesn't need any documentation and a separate page is overkill. (Of course, changing it back would be worse.) Rocket000 (talk) 03:34, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh, there's probably different information all over the wikis. Over at de.wikipedia it said me that it should be done on any template as it reduces the “Pre-expand include size” and then more templates can be used. But if that's really no longer needed, maybe we should tag the documentation template as {{Deprecated}}, so that people no longer use it. Hi, in an effort to move the Commons:Language policy closer to completion, I have been editing it and cleaning it up for the last few days. I have tried to make the page as neutral and consistent as possible with the relevant policy and guidleine pages that it cross references.

I would appreciate it, as someone who has discussed some of these policies in the past, if you could look at Commons talk:Language policy and contribute your thoughts. This is the version that exists as I am writing it and I am encouraging everyone to consider the "static" page until everything gets sorted out.

Hallo Roman. Ja, es ist richtig, dass für gewöhnlich die Du-Form bevorzugt wird, entsprechend ist die de-Version auch mit der Du-Form geschrieben. Es gibt jedoch die Möglichkeit, wenn man will, eine Oberfläche in formalem Deutsch zu benutzen. Entsprechend gibt es, falls notwendig, sowohl eine Version in Deutsch und eine in Deutsch (Sie-Form). Wenn jedoch nur eine Version notwendig ist, dann gibt es extra eine Vorlage, die dafür sorgt, dass auch in de-formal die normale de-Version angezeigt wird und man so keine zwei redundanten Vorlagen erstellen muss (Bekanntestes Beispiel ist {{Information}}). Template:Creator - Kategorien

Hi, wenn eine Homecat gesetzt ist sollte das Creator template meiner Meinung nach nicht mehr nach "yyyy births" oder "yyyy deaths" Kategorisiert werden. Die Homecat ist doch bereits Unterkategorie der Geburtstagskategorien. Zumal sehen die vielen Creators in den Geburtstagskategorien so nach Wartungskategorie aus. Viele Grüße, --Martin H. Sometimes, I remove them while editing, as I agree with this. No, that's not possible, because Commons is a media file repository and doesn't have any articles like Wikipedia. Hello, I noticed that you protected main page images of the English language Wikipedia. While I can understand the protection and am perfectly fine with the protection, I was just wondering if you could protect them only from uploading, which is now possible with the MediaWiki software. You need to press "Unlock move permissions" and then you can set who is allowed to overwrite the file. Then, set the edit protection to all users, move protection doesn't matter as only sysops can move files anyways. Since the English Wikipedia main page wouldn't suffer if someone vandalizes the image description page, I'd be happy if you could make them editable when they're on the Main Page. I added it there for localization (I found the message in Special:AllMessages), but this is random, because I'm actually pretty sure that it existed when I added it (its meaning was "Links:"). After scrolling a bit through Special:AllMessages, {{int:Abusefilter-links}} with the meaning "Useful links:" might be something we could use as an alternative now that this message disappeared. I haven't been keeping up software changes the last couple months (took a nice little break from the admin/technical side of Commons for a bit; back now) but I think some default system messages were removed recently and this could have been one of them. I doubt you would have randomly used a name like that if it didn't already exist.

The thing with system messages is that they're context/usage-oriented (like HTML tags for example). A message called "Abusefilter-links" should really only be used for abuse filter links. A new message can be created for use in Commons:Administrators/Template. This allows us to stay flexible and change one or the other in the future without effecting all instances of it's current text (i.e. "Useful links:"). I understand the desire to reuse pre-existing messages (translation already being done is a major reason, there's less to maintain), but it's a good practice to get into and can help avoid problems in the future (for example, the situation with {{int:license}}/{{int:license-header}}/bugzilla:19966/etc - still catching up on these things). To save some work, you can always transclude the content from an existing system message in a new one. Reduces redundancy while preserving the uniqueness of the {{int:}} usage. If you ever re-purposed a template that previously redirected to another, you can see the advantages here. As long as people don't start interchangeably using the two, then we're good. I'm all for general-purpose system messages too (like {{int:edit}} or {{int:pipe-separator}}). Having something like {{int:links}} might be useful. Rocket000 (talk) 05:44, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

<recopying over here>. Some other people have had this issue. There's a couple ways arround this. First of all, you can hold down shift well double clicking to edit, and not hold down shift to look up a word (holding down shift prevents the popup from activating). Second of all, you can enable the reverseShift option (If your not sure how to do that, i can help you. reverseShift makes it so you have to do shift+double click to look up a word), and use the key combo ctrl+shift+l to look things up (the key combo is still experimental though).
