HotCat on template pages

[1] Did you see the warning message? I'm just checking since you're the first person to trip the filter after I enabled it. I'm curious as to why you saved it anyway? It doesn't look like a false positive since the category is outside the <noinclude> tags. Did you miss the warning and think you hit Preview instead of Save or something (happened to me before)? Rocket000 (talk) 17:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Heh, I just noticed [2]. Rocket000 (talk) 21:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I tried to save, but then it showed me the edit window with the message above it. This was actually good, because I could correct Hotcat's mistake, I just unfortunately clicked the window away and tried to do it again, but it didn't want to work again like this. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:14, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it only warns you once. I figured since using HotCat this way is mistake and not abuse/vandalism it shouldn't disallow it if someone insisted in adding a category that way. ;) Rocket000 (talk) 20:40, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Re:Hotcat and templates*

Thank you very much for informing me about it and thanks for correcting my edits.   ■ MMXXtalk  19:28, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Category:Information museum templates

Hi,

After your changes, that cat is now empty whereas it should contain all the template museums one by one. Could you fix it please? Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 14:03, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Done, should be working now. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:11, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, The Evil IP address!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Special:AbuseFilter/8

Discovered a bug. It's actually a problem with the extension (or MediaWiki) itself but something to be mindful of. I don't think it's an issue yet here since the false positive rate is practically 0, but it's something to watch for (with any filter). We may need to add a rule to exclude edits to pages that already had test edits (using added_lines instead of new_wikitext should be enough, but apparently that doesn't work right). I'm not adding it yet if we don't really need it for performance reasons. Rocket000 (talk) 20:25, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

In case the report isn't clear, I did not add the . It was already there. Rocket000 (talk) 20:27, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah yeah, that should be improved. Maybe Mike.lifeguard, who originally wrote the filter (and who also seems to have a good understanding for such things) is able to help here; the filter is public, so he should also see it. I'm slowly learning how this abuse filter works, but I'm not yet that good actually. --The Evil IP address (talk) 20:43, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
So am I. I just thought I'd share this with you to help that learning process. Rocket000 (talk) 21:02, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Retouched

Question: When you moved Template:Retouched, it affected transclusions on file pages, making it look like it does here. Is there something else we can do so it will transclude as it should? Or will there be a bot going around renaming the old template? wadester16 00:21, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

That happens due to double redirects. It is fixed now. Rocket000 (talk) 01:01, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Great, thanks. wadester16 01:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Day interwikis

FYI. I am going to make a bot request, soon, to have the interwikis updated on all the day galleries. Just an FYI before you go past Septembers days. Evrik (talk) 18:31, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

No worries. I just randomly saw that the current day only had one interwiki, and thus added those from en.wikipedia. I'm not planning to do this on more days. I'm excited to see your bot in the future. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:41, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Six months protection of File:Five Presidents Oval Office.jpg

Hi. To me, the recent to IP edits on the above page look more like experimentation. Currently, it's a bit too easy to remove image annotations, but this is something that will change in the next version. Thus I'd be glad if you'd unprotect the page. Keep in mind, this is a wiki. BTW six months is way too long for IP edit protection and you didn't undo the last IP edit. -- User:Docu at 12:53, 10 September 2009 (UTC), 13:03, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't think that this was just some testing. The edits have been made on six different days, that's very uncommon for simple testers. However, you're right that six months is too long, and thus I reduced the protection to 2 months. Let's hope the new version will reduce the inappropriate image notes. Cheers, --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:58, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
There isn't any relation between most of these IPs. It's just the description page of a frequently viewed image. Remember, not all IPs are evil and the idea to exclude IPs from editing image notes was dismissed. -- User:Docu at 21:58, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Right, not everyone is evil, but if the image is so frequently used that several Ips are testing/vandalizing there then I don't see any problem with protecting it. If there's an IP who wants to make a good edit, I'm happy to perform the edit. Also, it's only 2 months. That's not really long. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:13, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
You might want to look at en:Wikipedia:Vandalism for a definition of vandalism. The edits you listed don't all match that definition. While I understand that some wikis don't want any IP edits, this does not apply commons (or en.wikipedia). -- User:Docu at 22:52, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Cascading protection

I'm just wondering, but why did you protect File:BEA Viscount 701 at Manchester.jpg with the cascading protection enabled? --The Evil IP address (talk) 00:48, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

This was actually not intented, I was about to sleep when I protected the page, I think I had the checkbox checked and did not notice (or maybe I did checked it, not sure actually). Esby (talk)

ThisMonthInRecentYears

ThisMonthInRecentYears worked after a fashion, but while it automatically updated the links for each month, it did not update the page displayed. See this link here. One more

Day gallery header I created this one ... any suggestions for how to replace the english verbage on all the pages with the template? Evrik (talk) 02:36, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Done using AWB, replaced "en|Media related to %%title%%" or "en|Media related to the %%title%%" with "Day gallery header". --Martin H. (talk) 13:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Creator

I had a moment to look again on Creator. I created Template:Creator/test template page and used Creator:Stefan Bałuk as a test page. I fixed a problem with {Homecat} and I run into some problems with birth-year and death-year categories, so I might give up on them for time being. I believe version at Template:Creator/test is ready to replace Template:Creator. --Jarekt (talk) 14:17, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Done, furthermore I've found out the reason why it didn't categorize with your code: If you put the code in Special:ExpandTemplates, then this will give the following: . The HTML comment comes from I18n month and the CSS code from Date. Hope that helps. Please also remember to update Template:Creator/doc. Thanks. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:18, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
thanks, I never knew about Special:ExpandTemplates that could be quite useful. So to get the date categories one has to either modify I18n month and Date templates so ISOdate returns clean year without comments or CSS. Or the other option is to clean up the date somehow afterward. Do you know about any cleansing procedures? --Jarekt (talk) 21:30, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
I've just checked out that the HTML comment is not a bad thing (just try out using in the sandbox and it will work). Maybe you can ask on the template talk page if they add a parameter so that you can disable the CSS class (for example CSS=no or something like this). --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:51, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Comments are always striped out completely in the HTML. Retaining them is just a special feature of Special:ExpandTemplates. FYI. :) Rocket000 (talk) 03:37, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
I think I will try a different approach: using as in but first I will have to make sure I have correct error checking. --Jarekt (talk) 16:27, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I created much simpler ISOyear and modified Template:Creator/test to use it. See results in Creator:Hans von Aachen. --Jarekt (talk) 19:49, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Ah, that looks good. Are you still testing, or can the code already be used? --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
It is ready to use. --Jarekt (talk) 20:22, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
I will do some more testing --Jarekt (talk) 04:25, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I am done with testing. See Template:ISOyear/doc. I think we can move code from template:Creator/test to template:Creator. --Jarekt (talk) 16:09, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Done, it seems to be working. Nice work. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:54, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

All creator pages seem to belong to correct categories, but none of those categories contain any creator templates. Strange --Jarekt (talk) 17:11, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Kalligraphie

--The Evil IP address (talk) 19:44, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
--Sarang (talk) 11:08, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

for the server?

[3] Only if you are expecting a lot of edits to the doc. Everything in the noinclude tags is ignored when transcluded. This stopped being an issue a couple years ago but people still move things to a separate page for this reason (which is annoying IMO when you can't update the doc at the same time as the template, it also creates twice as many pages, is more to watch, etc.), so I'm just letting you know in case this what you meant. Something like this template really doesn't need any documentation and a separate page is overkill. (Of course, changing it back would be worse.) Rocket000 (talk) 03:34, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh, there's probably different information all over the wikis. Over at de.wikipedia it said me that it should be done on any template as it reduces the “Pre-expand include size” and then more templates can be used. But if that's really no longer needed, maybe we should tag the documentation template as Deprecated, so that people no longer use it. It's not that I would miss the template if we would no longer use it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:43, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Minor correction: One thing that I like about the documentation template is the visual separation from the template itself. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:16, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Commons:Language policy

Hi, in an effort to move the Commons:Language policy closer to completion, I have been editing it and cleaning it up for the last few days. I have tried to make the page as neutral and consistent as possible with the relevant policy and guidleine pages that it cross references.

I would appreciate it, as someone who has discussed some of these policies in the past, if you could look at Commons talk:Language policy and contribute your thoughts. This is the version that exists as I am writing it and I am encouraging everyone to consider the "static" page until everything gets sorted out.

Many thanks. Evrik (talk) 17:09, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm gonna check it out. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:30, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I reverted this revision because I think is used for software form, not for indicator. (not precise) I think the usages are different, so using LangSwitch may be better. Best regards. Kwj2772 (msg) 14:12, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Possible, however, I've partially reverted because a part of the edit was ok anyways. --The Evil IP address (talk) 15:07, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Please do not add inappropriate imagenotes to images. Imagenotes are there to give further description of one image, for example to identify objects or persons on an image or to zoom an image's part. See these two images for proper use of imagenotes.

Imagenotes should not represent your own opinion of the image's subject, ask questions about the subject or complain about factual incorrectness of an image. These things should be done on the image's talk page.

Deutsch (Sie-Form) ?

--The Evil IP address (talk) 21:56, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
In welchen Fällen findet demnach die Sie-Form Verwendung? Roman06:46, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
--The Evil IP address (talk) 09:39, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
--The Evil IP address (talk) 11:24, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Template:Creator - Kategorien

--The Evil IP address (talk) 10:17, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Header removal

Hey Evil, with this diff you removed both of the headers in the image. May I ask why this was done? Huntster (t @ c) 05:10, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

There was once some discussion in the village pump (here and here) where it has come to the conclusion that these headings are somewhat redundant. Sometimes, I remove them while editing, as I agree with this. Since this is just what some people think, you can add them again if you want to. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:05, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Need help

Can in here make books and then print them or make order and then it is like real book? In English Wikipedia can do that.--W8G7B (talk) 00:02, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

No, that's not possible, because Commons is a media file repository and doesn't have any articles like Wikipedia. However, you're able to "cite" Commons galleries for scientific works, for example the Main Page (though this is kinda useless, as our galleries aren't meant to be cited like Wikipedia articles). --The Evil IP address (talk) 01:39, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion, it's very very nice to be appreciated. But I don't think I can make the level of commitment that being an admin would imply. Recently I've had the time and inclination to do quite a lot of work, but that could very quickly drop off to nothing (as it has at times in the past). En.wikipedia main page images

Hello, I noticed that you protected main page images of the English language Wikipedia. While I can understand the protection and am perfectly fine with the protection, I was just wondering if you could protect them only from uploading, which is now possible with the MediaWiki software. You need to press "Unlock move permissions" and then you can set who is allowed to overwrite the file. Then, set the edit protection to all users, move protection doesn't matter as only sysops can move files anyways. Since the English Wikipedia main page wouldn't suffer if someone vandalizes the image description page, I'd be happy if you could make them editable when they're on the Main Page. Thank you. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:10, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice! I've adjusted the image's protection accordingly, and I shall do so from now on.
Note, however, that some of the English Wikipedia's main page images are protected via cascading protection applied at this page. —David Levy 15:06, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

I added it there for localization (I found the message in Special:AllMessages), but this is random, because I'm actually pretty sure that it existed when I added it (its meaning was "Links:"). After scrolling a bit through Special:AllMessages, with the meaning "Useful links:" might be something we could use as an alternative now that this message disappeared. What do you think? --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:18, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
I haven't been keeping up software changes the last couple months (took a nice little break from the admin/technical side of Commons for a bit; back now) but I think some default system messages were removed recently and this could have been one of them. I doubt you would have randomly used a name like that if it didn't already exist.
The thing with system messages is that they're context/usage-oriented (like HTML tags for example). A message called "Abusefilter-links" should really only be used for abuse filter links. A new message can be created for use in Commons:Administrators/Template. This allows us to stay flexible and change one or the other in the future without effecting all instances of it's current text (i.e. "Useful links:"). I understand the desire to reuse pre-existing messages (translation already being done is a major reason, there's less to maintain), but it's a good practice to get into and can help avoid problems in the future (for example, the situation with //bugzilla:19966/etc - still catching up on these things). To save some work, you can always transclude the content from an existing system message in a new one. Reduces redundancy while preserving the uniqueness of the usage. If you ever re-purposed a template that previously redirected to another, you can see the advantages here. As long as people don't start interchangeably using the two, then we're good. I'm all for general-purpose system messages too (like or ). Having something like might be useful. Rocket000 (talk) 05:44, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
I can see your point, I wasn't aware of the bug you cited. As recommended, I created MediaWiki:Links with . --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:22, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Re:Wiktionary script

Hi thank you, for your feedback, so could you report it directly on en:n:MediaWiki talk:Gadget-dictionaryLookupHover.js (and in English) ? With the link of the other script concern (as MediaWiki:Gadget-dictionaryLookupHover.js) ? Regards, Otourly (talk) 20:53, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

<recopying over here>. Some other people have had this issue. There's a couple ways arround this. First of all, you can hold down shift well double clicking to edit, and not hold down shift to look up a word (holding down shift prevents the popup from activating). Second of all, you can enable the reverseShift option (If your not sure how to do that, i can help you. reverseShift makes it so you have to do shift+double click to look up a word), and use the key combo ctrl+shift+l to look things up (the key combo is still experimental though). Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 18:22, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Hey, the ctrl+shift+l thing works very good. Thanks for the tip. --The Evil IP address (talk) 23:32, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Got a surprise :)

Hey The Evil IP. I saw this. Now look at [5] and be surprised :) Best regards, Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 12:15, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Aw, thanks man. This is exactly what I needed. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:24, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Main Page video icon

Call me fussy, but I don't like the icon's black colour, because it just looks like a block blob. I think File:Video-x-generic.svg looks better. Jolly Janner (talk) 17:16, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Agreed ;-). I replaced it. Thanks for the notice. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:32, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
