Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:46, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading File:Byzance_en_1367.jpg!
Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. However, it will be also an improvement if you can export (save) this image in PNG format without artefacts and upload. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

Thanks for uploading File:Le cours de la rivière Araxe.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Le cours de la rivière Araxe.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Your image uploads edit
Hello! Every one of your uploads is a identical copy, often of lower quality, and sometimes even with the image date left intact (e.g. File:Frontière entre les empires romain et perse en 565.png), but renamed and uploaded as your own work. Commons license allows you to take these images and modify them, but what you are doing is uploading low-quality duplicates with no purpose. If you want to use the images in the French Wikipedia, you can and should use the originals, not create worse versions of your own. Regards, Constantine ✍ 20:45, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Quite in agreement to delete those files. I was mistakingly under the impression that it was necessary to "download" an image in order to use it in an article. I have now found the correct "Help page" (Aide: insérer un fichier)" which was used in the last articles submitted.
Thank you for your help.
--Trad.byzantion (talk) 18:22, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Why did you not fix the images on your own by using the larger source images in the fr wikipedia? I spent almost an hour to find the source images and deleted the duplicates - most of them could have been tagged as copyvios because of wrong/misleading license and/or false own work claim/missing attribution of the original creator. Now you need to replace the images in fr wiki, go to [1] and check every red image to see the original source image. --Denniss (talk) 00:59, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry to have given you this much work. But again, many thanks for your help. It is really easy to download pictures into a Wikipedia article, once you know how to do it. However the first steps are often a question of try and error. In my case, mainly errors. I have now replaced all the wrong images and the articles are considerably improved. Hope that you will not have to scan my texts again.
