Gallery issues to be discussed

Agriculture

Hi, as you might know, I recently started a project to document agriculture in California: Commons:Agriculture in Northern California Project. Agriculture is one of our weak spots on Commons and Wikipedia and I'm hoping that I can also motivate others to contribute visuals (both photos and videos) in this area. Looking at the featured picture galleries, I'm wondering whether it would make sense to combine Agriculture (which is now weirdly located in “Places” and Industry (even more weirdly under “Architecture”) under a new header called “Economy” (or something similar). Any thoughts? All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 02:59, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

What dou you see when you look at this photo?
a) Two tractors, a field and some forest.
b) An integral part of the Swedish economy.
c) People working to produce food and earn a living.
Hi Frank, good idea, but this is a hard one. When "Agriculture" was created and located in "Places", it was in response to the fact that people's first reaction is to place those photos under "Places/Natural". They still do, People see something growing and think "Nature", even if agriculture is very far from what a natural place looks like. "Industry" ended up under “Architecture” because the photos were mostly of industrial buildings of some kind, so the same cross-over there.
Getting the galleries to work well, you have to make it easy for those using them to relate to the page names and headings. People tend to have a more simplistic view when they describe photos, unless you are in the nerd section of "Natural phenomena". They see houses, plants, cars, people, whatever. More abstract and loftier concepts like "Economy" are harder to get across, so this bears to think about. I suspect that if we introduced an "Economy" gallery, most users would think it relates to photos of banks and stock markets, and not to someone planting rice or an old saw mill. The name of a gallery page is mostly the answer to the question: "What do you see in this photo?". Still, as an umbrella heading with sub-galleries in place, it could be done. The only other, simpler, term that comes to mind would be "Work". Let's think about this while we finish this cleanup project, some bright idea might occur. --Cart (talk) 10:52, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Back again

Hello Cart,

sorry that I have again disappeared from the FPC page and our FP categories project for two weeks. I got some things to do in real live and then I wanted to prepare some more photos for WLM (I have so many unedited photos on my disk that I really need these competitions in order to bring myself to edit at least some of them). It would have been more polite to tell you about my absence earlier – sorry!

It was nice to hear that WLM was the reason for you being here on Commons. It’s similar with me – I started seriously contributing to Commons with monument photos. So when people doubt the usefulness of these competitions (they often do), we are two nice examples that at least sometimes WLM and WLE really encourage people to a long-time involvement ;–).

All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 09:46, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

New variant of FP data manipulations

Just FYI, Cart: yesterday I stumbled over a kind of manipulations of the FP data which was new to me. As it is hard to guess the intention of these manipulations, it is hard to say whether they are vandalism or not; but in any case I had to revert them because they are irritating and make it harder to check the validity of a FP claim. The following files were affected:

The new thing is that the users did not add an invalid {{Assessments}} template to the file description pages, but added artificial entries for these photos to the chronological lists of FPs. I could not find a FP nomination page for any of these photos, therefore I regard these artificial entries as completely faked. Here are my reverts of these edits which clearly emphasize what was added:

[1], [2], [3]

As I said before, the intention behind these edits is unclear. They could be just caused by a misunderstanding, of course, but one could interpret them also as part of a refined FP fakery. In any case, we have to watch out if more such manipulations occur, to revert them and (if the same users repeat these kinds of edits) to take measures against them. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 09:43, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

For the record: I have written to the two involved users here and here; I hope my wording is both polite and clear. --Aristeas (talk) 09:57, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Aristeas, That's a new one for me too. <sigh!> Great that you caught it, and your messages looks very appropriate. Thank you for taking care of it! It might be a prank or simple vandalism just to see if they can get away with it, but I (cynical as ever) am leaning more towards that some photographers will do anything to get exposure for their photos. The Wiki project is always a prime target for such things. I have changed your gallery to a normal list, since I don't want to add to displaying these photos for internet picture Bots. The chronological list is a base for POTY and someone might have thought they found a shortcut to that.
Mundane everyday things outside Commons are taking up a lot of my time lately, and will do so for a while. I'm often on the road and not at home with my cozy computer, so unless things are urgent, answers will take some time. I still find it it to bothersome to edit or do anything else on Commons on my phone. (I guess that sentence marked me as very OLD). :-)
Btw, have you given any thought or had any epiphanies regarding Frank's query above, about getting a new "heading" for agriculture and Industry? He has a good point, I'm just not sure how to implement this in the best way. Options are sloshing around in the back of my head, but nothing has solidified yet. (talk page stalker)'s opinion are also welcome. --Cart (talk) 12:45, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
To answer the last point (finally): Frank’s idea is intriguing, but like you I have not found a complete and clear solution which doesn’t cause other problems, sorry, --Aristeas (talk) 08:14, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

FP mess

Cart, sorry for disturbing you all the time, but I need your second opinion. “Somebody” has created a complete mess regarding this FP nomination. As far as I understand Tm had the good idea to separate the denoised version from the original; therefore Tm uploaded the denoised version under a new name, changed the nomiantion page to link to the new file and even transferred the FP templates correctly to the new file. But “somebody” reverted Tm’s changes and even filed a deletion request against the new file. Now the FP links are a mess and in the future nobody will understand which version was the original, which version was created by whom and which version is FP. I would suggest to revert everything to the last version by Tm because Tm’s changes (while maybe not necessary) were consistent and clearly separated the original and the denoised version. The alternative is to remove all FP stuff from the new file and then to check and repair all links manually. What would you do? (I can do it, but before acting I want your option.) --Aristeas (talk) 07:57, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Aristeas, just revert the whole thing and sort it out in a correct manner. Arion is a little bit too fond of moving files around without thinking about the future consequences. If you do the cleanup, Ill leave a message to Arion's talk page about what's going on. Thanks for noticing this. --Cart (talk) 08:52, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Cart! Because the discussion is split now over various pages, I have answered it here, trying to explain what has happend and what is the easiest solution. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 14:14, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

--Cart (talk) 10:34, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Priscilla Tolkien at the Eastgate Hotel

Hi Cart,

by sheer coincidence I stumbled over your photo of Priscilla Tolkien at the Eastgate, mentioning it was taken by you, presumably?

As the Travelling Tolkienist I am always on the lookout for fun and interesting stories on all things Tolkien - and if you participated in OM X then there certainly would be stories to listen to?

I'd be delighted to hear from you.

All the best, Marcel M.Buelles (talk) 08:39, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Marcel! Yes, I took that photo when I was at OM X. I presume you have seen the rest of my photos at Category:Oxonmoot 1979. I was very active within the Tolkien world in the 80s, so I might have a story or two to tell. ;-)
If you like to get in contact with me for such projects, please email me through the "Email this user" here on Commons and tell me a little about yourself and what you do with your collected Tolkien stories.
I am a little busy at the moment, but later in December things will clear up and I will be avaliable for chats. Best, --Cart (talk) 09:07, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Flygplanet

Hej,

--Cart (talk) 18:59, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Nominations, etc.

Hi! I haven't been reviewing photos in the last few days because I'm giving my hands some rest, but I'm really pleased to see you nominating again, and I'll get to it soon! Is your eyesight improved?

All my best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:35, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Ikan, thanks for asking, but no, not yet. These two nominations were just to get the new gallery pages going by using them as examples. That was the only reason. I had help from another photographer to pick them out and check if they were in a good enough condition to nominate. I'm having a major operation on both my eyes in just a few days now, and before that I have a lot of time on my hands. I use some of that to help with maintenance work here on Commons. Even if the op goes as planned and I do get my eyesight back, I doubt I'll be really active on FPC again. I simply don't enjoy it anymore. Besides, I'll be too busy editing and uploading my huge backlog of photos. --Cart (talk) 12:16, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Good luck on the operation! -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:21, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Things are going well so far

FYI: I have new eyes. Mostly synthetic. :-) The op went well, and I'm healing and regaining my eyesight. First impressions are: "OMG!! Did I edit that?!?! It looks horrible, and look at all those dust spots!" Oh well, I think I have to live with most of my mistakes. Too much work re-doing and fix all photos I would like to.

I'm not really "back" yet, as I'm still healing and the eyes won't be stable for another six weeks or so, but I'll pop in from time to time to see what's going on. --Cart (talk) 10:16, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Glad to hear this and also cooooool to synthetic eyes. Good way to get past the spider robots! — Rhododendrites talk18:00, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Rhododendrites. Right, the spidey-bots can't touch me now. ;-) They managed to fix the right eye to almost 100%, and the left to about 65%. Funny enough, it takes a bit of effort to be able to see properly again. The first week was a chaotic psychedelic trip, like someone had gone berserk with Lightroom. That has settled down now, and I'm editing again. I'm actually thinking it might be a good idea to start making FPC noms again. (Pinging a 'Hello' to Ikan here as well.) Getting feedback on how I now perceive the world would be very useful. In a way, I'm learning how to see again, and need to calibrate my sight. I'm confident FPC voters will gladly tell me if my editing is off. :-D All the best, --Cart (talk) 18:25, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

“Photos by user” category for deceased user

Hi Cart, only just now I have seen with consternation that Holger.Ellgaard has deceased in January 2023. May he rest in peace. I had only some little contacts with Holger, but liked his manners and his documentary photos. Now I see that there is no “Photos by ...” category for his countless photographs (unlike with the photos of many/most other advanced users). Would you consider it appropriate to create such a category and to add it to his photos, in order to make it a bit easier to appreciate his life’s work? Or should I respect that he himself did not create such a category? Asking you as a person with much experience and good taste. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 11:09, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

He has a wikidata item and Swedish WP article, so it's definitely in place IMO. --A.Savin 11:13, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Aristeas, Holger was definitely one of our best photographers and should really have a category for all his photos, but not an ordinary hidden user category, I think his photos deserve a proper category (similar to the one we have for Erik Holmén and other photographers) with links to WikiData and articles. I also see that he has a Creator:Holger Ellgaard template for use on his photos. --Cart (talk) 11:22, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you both! Very well. We already have an appropriate base category Holger Ellgaard. Would it be correct to start with creating (in analogy to the already existing subcategories Drawings by Holger Ellgaard‎ and Videos by Holger Ellgaard‎) a new subcategory Photographs by Holger Ellgaard, to add the supercategories like Photographs by photographer from Sweden, to create the corresponding Wikidata item(s) and to link them with his existing Wikidata entry? Or would I have to use a different approach? Best, --Aristeas (talk) 11:35, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Aristeas, looks good to me. We treat him and his work the same way we do with other deceased photographers and artists. Just because he was a Commoner/Wikipedian and a friend, doesn't make him any different, from an encyclopedian and cataloguing point of view, than say Ansel Adams. ;-) --Cart (talk) 11:45, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Cart! I have started the category and the Wikidata item and will add the category to all of his photos over the next days. Any improvements/corrections/hints are welcome, of course! Best, --Aristeas (talk) 11:58, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Update: Just FYI, Cart and A.Savin: it’s more than I had expected ;–). Now there are > 37,000 Photographs by Holger Ellgaard (wow), and I have still to check some 500 remaining files with mixed contents (may do that after the holidays). Also Drawings by Holger Ellgaard has got many additional members and I have added Buildings by Holger Ellgaard for his architectural work. Probably I have made some minor mistakes here and there (sorting > 37,000 files is a lot of work), but at least I hope Ellgaard’s files are now represented better and easier to access. All the best and happy holidays, --Aristeas (talk) 16:47, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Wow indeed Aristeas, that is an impressive collection indeed! You have done a great job giving it some structure. And a fine gesture for our departed Commoner and photographer. Thank you! --Cart (talk) 16:59, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Quick question

I understand that you're unfortunately not going to take part in FPC going forward after recent patronising comments were made, but would you have any objection to me nominating these pictures at some point? Obviously you don't have to vote for them or even visit the FPC page if you don't want. But I think they deserve the star and they are somewhere in my list atm. If you'd rather I didn't nominate them at all, I won't. Hope you're well anyway :) Cmao20 (talk) 16:42, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Cmao20, that's very kind of you, but I don't think you should nominate those photos. I photographed and edited them while I was waiting for my eye operation, and doing that when you are almost blind is not a to be recommended. ;-) I don't think they have enough technical quality for FPC (especially not the tugboat, it looks horrible!), or I would already have nominated them. They can't be re-done since the original files aren't great either. It would just be a waste of everyone's time to nominate them. But thanks for the thought, it was nice. --Cart (talk) 17:31, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Most memorable shot 2023

Hi Cart, the 2023 iteration of Your most memorable shot has arrived. Maybe you want to enrich it with one of your photos? That would be great! Just wanting to help to spread a nice idea, best, --Aristeas (talk) 10:01, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Aristeas, I'm not a member of the group but I see that they are inviting guests this year, so why not. Thanks for the tip. --Cart (talk) 10:07, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, it’s an open list this year, this is why I thought I should share the tip. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 10:36, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
I didn't get an invitation. Did I miss something? --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:49, 19 January 2024 (UTC) P.S. It has always been an open list.
Frank Schulenburg, it looks like the info about this has only been posted by Suyash.dwivedi on Commons:Commons Photographers User Group#2024 and Commons:Village pump#Your most memorable shot 2023 (January / February 2023). No individual invitations, like the ones you used to make, were made. --Cart (talk) 15:13, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Ah ok, I understand. Thanks for letting me know. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:02, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
@Frank Schulenburg: Because there were no individual invitations this year, I have posted a short notice about the Your most memorable shot to the talk pages of some users, like here to Cart, in order to spread the news a bit. But I was not able (nor responsible) to send invitations to all users. Maybe we could propose to the current staff of the User Group to made individual invitations again next year. ;–) Best, --Aristeas (talk) 14:31, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
I think sending an invitation to photographers here on Commons would still make sense. Suyash, any thoughts about this? --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:29, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Certainly, could you please send an invitation, @Frank? I don't have the capability to send mass messages, so your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. -- Suyash Dwivedi (talk) 18:46, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Suyash, you can send messages to all members by installing “massendiskus.js” (like here) and using the list of usernames I created (which needs to by updated every now and then). Ailura knows how to do this as well. Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:06, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Suyash Dwivedi, for sending the “Deadline Approaching” message! This was a great idea and it has worked very well – now the list of entries on Your most memorable shot 2023 is much longer. Thanl you again and best regards, --Aristeas (talk) 08:56, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Tangent: This discussion made me curious about mass message sender rights on Commons. Turns out we don't have such a thing! Opened a VP discussion here: Commons:Village_pump#Why_doesn't_commons_have_a_mass_message_sender_user_right?. — Rhododendrites talk19:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Some more lost photos

Here is the mentioned list:

Some of them are duplicates, so you may want to make deletion requests for them (sorry!), but some of them are (I think) new, e.g. File:Abandoned limestone quarry on Furilden Gotland 1 (50519926548).jpg (impressive!), and therefore need some more categories etc.

And I found this ;–): File:Maud Olofsson.JPG which could need some more categories, too. Best, – Aristeas (talk) 19:14, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Thank you Aristeas, for all your help in this big effort to (finally!) get my photos in order. Yep, people are finding my photos in all sorts of places. thankfully the new function for uploading from Flickr sends a notification when someone uploads a photo from your account, so now I can deal with them as they get uploaded here. I will go over these files as soon as I get some spare time. Yes, the old quarry on Furilden is a gorgeous place. We did many fashion photo shoots there. Great scenes for backgrounds. Unfortunately I can't upload any of those here, because of licensing and contracts with the models. They will have to go on Flickr.
Hehe, funny you should come across the photo of Maud wearing my necklace. ;-) She wore it in the first official photo of that government too. Talk about giving me an ego-boost! :-D She was a good customer, gave me plenty of work. I'll see what I can do about the categories for the photo. Thanks again! --Cart (talk) 19:53, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Yet another one
Cart, thank you for all the sorting and the removal of the duplicates! It’s a pity, I had hoped that more of the images were unique. But at least we have now less duplicates with poor descriptions; and the one new photo of the old quarry on Furilden is a good overview of that site.
Ah, here is yet another one, an impressive yellow honeysuckle. Please check it (only if and when you have free time!). Sorry for the supplements, but one must vary the search in all possible ways to find these “lost” images, and this one was again tagged differently. All the best. --Aristeas (talk) 11:16, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi Aristeas and thanks for finding yet another stray. I've fixed it to match the rest of my uploads. I try to always upload on Commons first, but mistakes do happen. These are all old photos, so the quality doesn't hold up for a closer look, but they might be of some use for the wiki-project so it would be a shame to let them go to waste.
Could I please ask another favor of you? I've been bogged down in the jewelry swamp these last days. Articles and categories about such things are in a sorry state on both Commons and most wikis, except for the de-wiki. Kudos to you guys for that! But some improvements can be made. Would you be so kind as to check the language in this caption, I have a nagging feeling that I got the verb in the wrong place and that the language could be better. Most of the time I can manage 1-3 words for captions, but whole sentences feel iffy. Best, --Cart (talk) 12:23, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Checked. Funny enough the whole article Edelsteinfasser, while being very informative, is written in a somewhat wonky German; your caption is actually one of the clearest sentences – the order of words is fine. I have just changed a proposition, as IMHO „an“ is more idiomatic than „in“ here. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 14:36, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Great, A. :-) We used to be so much better in using German up here in the north. Now everything is half Swedish, half English. So it was refreshing to see that the port of Uddevalla doesn't have a 'Guest Harbor' but sports a 'Gasthafen' (to the right in the pano). --Cart (talk) 18:36, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Glass marble or frozen soap bubble?

“[G]lass marble” or frozen soap bubble?

Cart, while we are at this subject, what do you think on this image, also by Aaron Burden and by the same work period? The filename and the (former) description call this “[f]rost glistens on a glass marble”, but it looks just like all the other frozen soap bubbles. If it is a soap bubble, I would rename it; if it is indeed a glass marble, we must change the categories … Thank you! and all the best, --Aristeas (talk) 10:47, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Aristeas, there is no doubt that these are photos of frozen soap bubbles. It is an irritating thing (for us on Commons) that photographers are so prone to using poetic and flowery ways of describing their photos. In many cases this can be hard to see for people who are not native speakers of the language the "poetry" is delivered in. "Glass marble" sounds more lofty and poetic in English than "frozen soap bubble", but it really just means something round and shiny. It comes from the Marble (toy) that kids play with and sometimes stands for the magic of childhood imagination. Compare with this very famous title: The Blue Marble. Heaven save us from pretentious photographers! All of the uploads from that guy need a thorough resorting/renaming. I'll be AFK most of the day, but I can help out during the weekend. Best, --Cart (talk) 11:44, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Cart! – you have explained this very well. I am sorry if my question was too stupid; maybe I got the wording wrong. I already suspected that this was just a “poetic” filename, just as many image titles on Flickr. But in this case the “poetic” filename resembled a descriptive one, therefore I wanted a second opinion before renaming this file; it’s so easy to be reprimaned for renaming files, something I want to avoid. Now the renaming is   Done. Thank you and all the best, --Aristeas (talk) 17:36, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Aristeas, I have so far never read a 'stupid' question from you, and I don't think I ever will. ;-) Double-checking is always better than making mistakes.
It is tempting to hoard images to Commons, but I agree that uploaders could be a little bit more thorough. Too many times tags are confused with categories. I'm currently photographing some of the dullest and uninspiring buildings in Lysekil, and uploading museum photos from their more glorious past. I'm uninspired at the moment, and when that happens, I try to keep useful and fill in some of the gaps for sv-wiki. It prevents me from getting gloomy. After a while, inspiration usually returns. ;-) But I can tell you that museums are often just as bad as Flickr with the naming and scant info on many photos. There have been many times I just want to be able to edit their database myself. At least I can do something about it as I upload the photos here. Best, --Cart (talk) 19:00, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Aristeas, I went browsing a bit on Flickr to see if there were other interesting photos of frozen bubbles. I came across photos by a woman from Minnesota, all with nice licenses. She does very good winter photos, so I uploaded some more of them. It doesn't hurt that the photos have descriptions either. ;-) Found this one for your squirrel collection. --Cart (talk) 21:04, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much, Cart – these are great finds, Lorie Shaull takes beautiful photos which are (when properly namend, labelled and categorized, as you do) a real enrichment for Commons. That squirrel is so sweet :–). ... Best, --Aristeas (talk) 11:01, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

File:Woolsey Fire - tree ridge in flames 20181119-PB-008.jpg

File:Woolsey Fire - tree ridge in flames 20181119-PB-008.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A.Savin 11:43, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for the clarification, but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about this since I can't access the reason for the tag. --Cart (talk) 11:56, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
Yes, for the sake of transparency this should be discussed as regular DR, and not limited to those few who have access to VRT tickets. Thanks for statement. --A.Savin 12:05, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

I just wanted to leave you this little cat here, I don't really like cats very much but I do like cat photos. I hope it doesn't dirty your keyboard and lets you work as usual. This message is also a way to apologize for the discussion about Steave Jobs. Sometimes I tend to be very insistent and annoying in my exaggerated search to be right, it is something I am trying to deal with, I would like to apologize, I always liked your comments on my nominations, whether positive or negative. Hugs, be well (I didn't use chatgpt to write this)

Wilfredor (talk) 13:41, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Thank you Wilfredor, that was kind and thoughtful of you. I like cats and cat photos very much. I have no hard feelings at all regarding that discussion. :-) As long as discussions are based on facts, they are often very productive and can lead to new insights. All the best, --Cart (talk) 17:00, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Dear Cart, just FYI and for fun: The following ones of your files were last edited by an IP:

I have already reverted some destructive edits on the 1st one, making good use of my new rollback right ;–). Best, --Aristeas (talk) 19:22, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

And here are some more files which were edited by an IP not last, but recently (under the top 5 edits); such files can also contain unwandted changes because these often go unnoticed:

As said above, just FYI. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 19:36, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
