Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. Thank you. Siebrand 16:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Mount St. Helens 05-18-1980.jpg edit

I started poking around your uploads -- I didn't get very far because I clicked on the Mount St. Helens upload.

I have a couple of questions, like how come you uploaded a smaller version and did you do anything to it other than scaling and cropping? -- carol 10:04, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The original 2048 x 3072 pixel image at http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Imgs/Jpg/MSH/Images/MSH80_eruption_mount_st_helens_05-18-80.jpg is 3.5 MB, which seemed excessive to me given that the resolution isn't very high. So nothing was sacrificed by cutting the dimensions in half. Also, the borders of the original image aren't horizontal and vertical, and thus aren't very attractive; evidently the camera was tilted. This problem was readily fixed by cropping down to 984 × 1,460 pixels. All done with Photoshop. That's all I did. WolfmanSF 10:22, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

no layer overlay, some color pull out

unedited original
While I was working on the image I was considering the different films and what the astronomers knew about their qualities back then. I have a strong feeling that the observatory that took that photograph was using the brand that tended to develop more blue (the competitor developed more red so, if I remember correctly, you had to decide which color you wanted to stand out when deciding which film to buy). It actually would be kind of interesting to see the astro photos that the observatory had been taking right before the dust and ash stole the night sky from them. I suspect blue which is the reason I had no problem removing some of it from the image.
I am not confident about my abilities; my confidence about my knowledge is that I know what I know -- that is the reason that I like to put the original online here as well as whatever I did to repair those things that time and scanning from paper into pixels has done to these things. I had more confidence in my changes when I saw other photographs that were not so blue. I also fixed an image that was a car that had been half buried by ash -- after I fixed it, the colors seemed to be truer to me but I could make out less detail about the inside of the car than in the original.
My first uploaded version -- I got to looking at it and the white part in the center of the ash plume lost so much detail. I made that by using the green layer from a decomposition, blurring that, lightening the value gamma and changing the mode to overlay. It made the dark parts at the top very very beautiful and much more 3 dimensional and it also seemed to get rid of the noise, but the blown out white parts were not worth it. The way wiki works, that version is still here, you just have to click on the date to see it in the upload history (the first time I wanted to see what changes had been made to an image, I reverted and then undid -- that was unnecessary).
I think that having both the original and the 'attempted repaired' version available, people who know what they are doing can start over and do it right if they want the image and others might just think that the repair that is here is better than they can do so, it is nice to have them both around.
Thanks for putting that gallery online with your image also. For one of the anniversaries the radio played a phone call that one of the missing people from that eruption had made. It was chilling to hear -- they knew enough about this kind of geological event to know that there was no way to escape the plume in the time that they had from the location that they were at. So, for me, one scan of an old photograph and the memory of one of the more sad and memorable radio productions I have had the pleasure to hear -- I enjoyed the time and it felt right to make the image less noisy and the plumes seem more 3D. -- carol 11:13, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure you're right about the excessive blue, but I would have no idea how best to deal with that. Actually, I don't remember ever hearing a tape of the phone call you speak of. I did see a video made by a TV newsman who got caught by the eruption, abandoned his car and tried to escape on foot. The video mainly shows darkness, but he gives some running commentary about how miserable and scared he is. He was near the edge of the heavily affected area and fortunately survived.
That must have been an impressive video camera that continues to function in a dust and ash filled atmosphere like that. I was a radio snob. Then the circumstances that forced me to leave Michigan and come to California lacked some logic and I have since become a Michigan radio snob due to the incredibly wrong situation.
The main reason I uploaded the image is that a smaller but very similar image had been uploaded and mislabeled as being of El Chichon, a Mexican volcano that erupted in 1982 (while I was in the vicinity). The error arose on the NOAA website, got transmitted to a NASA website, and then to other websites around the world. I've managed to have the Wikimedia image and some of the others deleted by now, but if you google for "El Chichon" images you'll still see some of these Mt. St. Helens photos. It's ridiculous because, being a low-elevation tropical mountain, El Chichon could never have snow on its slopes. WolfmanSF 10:13, 1 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Information is really something, isn't it? Some is accurate. Some is wrong on accident. Some is wrong on purpose. Some is wrong because the way to measure it is not mature enough when it is first measured. Some is wrong because the definition matures (like when they broke vitamin K into the many B vitamins). And some is probably wrong due to misunderstanding.
Finding images here is interesting. I think there are three kinds of people who upload images here. Gallery making people (they upload the images and make web pages that contain several images), people who use the category pages that come with the software and people who just upload images. The galleries seem to be the singular form of the word they represent, like Volcano and the galleries are the plural form Volcanoes and the search engine here seemed to be partial to gallery until I noticed that I was partial to searching for the singular form of the word. The engine is pretty good for finding images that contain the word or phrase searched in either the name or the description. I have just spent the last week or so trying to figure out what to do with images that were poorly named and without good description; and that is how I know the behavior of that beast.
I am glad that you put that other image in the Feature Pictures candidates. I am not going to vote there, as difficult as it seems sometimes. It is in some ways like a real election at times, with campaigning and they might even have little puddles of organizations that work like political parties do. Occasionally it really does seem like they are looking for good images as well. The volcano story was good also. Thanks. -- carol 14:58, 1 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, WolfmanSF!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Regarding-File:Americas Koppen Map.png- map legend color box-color changes.

Hello User:WolfmanSF, Thanks for your map File:Americas Koppen Map.png. This is about the change in color for the map legend color boxes that you have made in this map.(That is, climate zone Dfa has been changed to web color 99CC99, and climate zone Dfb has been changed to web color 339933 -both shades of green). May be retaining them from the original map is a good idea, to be able to compare climate zones from other maps ( map series) based or created from the original map used as a source. Would you please consider adding the same color as the original map. Once again thanks for your work. By 2know4power (talk) 23:43, 21 November 2015 (UTC).Reply

Perhaps the best solution would be to create a new version with the original colors. I adjusted the colors because it was useful for my purposes (in the Great American Interchange article) to make the colors of the tropical zones distinctly different from those of other climate zones. WolfmanSF (talk) 05:25, 23 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've posted a version with unaltered colors, and linked it to the altered version. WolfmanSF (talk) 10:07, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) edit

Please use SVG
Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

--Kesäperuna (talk) 21:28, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments. I hadn't realized until I just checked that ChemDraw does support export to SVG format. However, this process is not without problems, as illustrated by the outcome here ("dR" changed to "Rd" four times). WolfmanSF (talk) 00:24, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
With a little effort, I edited the SVG text with Geany to solve the problem. WolfmanSF (talk) 07:33, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Actually, looking at the SVG images a little more closely, they do NOT render correctly at smaller scales (in terms of the methyl and nitro substituents), unlike the other image formats, although they look fine at full scale. So, that conversion was a waste of time, evidently. WolfmanSF (talk) 08:50, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps the problem with the display of the substituent groups actually lies in the mechanism used to generate the PNG previews. WolfmanSF (talk) 18:16, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Unexplained image scaling edit

Hi Wolfman, could you look at restoring your artificial scaling back to their original size, or at least update their descriptions to say why the image is scaled? For example File:Possum122708b.jpg is smaller than its original, and File:Helene rev 127 raw 1.jpg is scaled up.

I am also looking at adding File:PIA19048 realistic color Europa mosaic.jpg for delisting, as the major retouching was not made clear during its original nomination, so it needs reviewing again.

Special:Search/"linear pixel" seems to list them. Thanks.--BevinKacon (talk) 23:11, 13 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

@BevinKacon: It should be obvious in both those cases why I changed the scalings from the originals, and I strongly feel I did so for valid reasons. I will add the rationales anyway, however. Regarding File:PIA19048 realistic color Europa mosaic.jpg, it was promoted to featured status on 5 November 2018, and the retouching was done on 06:19 27 October 2018, just before it was nominated. The note "Uploader's notes: the original NASA TIFF image has been modified by increasing linear pixel dimensions by a factor of 1.6 (to bring out fine detail), sharpening and conversion to JPEG format." was added to the first line of the image description on 06:41 27 October 2018, about 20 minutes after the retouched image was uploaded. The first editor other than me to support the FP nomination was Ikan Kekek and he did so on 08:47, 27 October 2018. So, your accusation that "the the major retouching was not made clear during its original nomination" is untruthful. WolfmanSF (talk) 00:31, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
As users cannot delist or change featured images, it makes more sense to just create Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:PIA19048 realistic color Europa mosaic.jpg.--BevinKacon (talk) 11:38, 17 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Errors on Map edit

File:Americas Köppen Map.png has significant errors. For example, there's no hot desert climate on the Colombian-Ecuadorian border. This needs serious revision. -- Veggies (talk) 20:06, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

I didn't create the map. It is taken from p. 1640 of this article. If you can find a better map, point it out. WolfmanSF (talk) 20:12, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I see. Shame that such a glaring error made it through peer-review in a scientific journal. File:Köppen-Geiger Climate Classification Map.png is quite superior but somebody with a better grasp of vector graphics than I have right now should eventually go through and correct all the mistakes that the journal made. -- Veggies (talk) 20:30, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I presume that in the 2007 version, the authors didn't make judgments about specific regions, but just uniformly applied their algorithm(s) to their global data set. WolfmanSF (talk) 20:50, 28 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think it's the other way around. The 2007 version's text states problems with the lack of data sets from which to draw conclusions from—which, in my mind, should have been a major red flag to either get better data or avoid arriving at illogical conclusions (such as a desert in the middle of the Amazon). -- Veggies (talk) 22:34, 28 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
