Technical

Administrators are users with the technical ability on Wikimedia Commons to:

  • delete and undelete images and other uploaded files, and to view and restore deleted versions
  • delete and undelete pages, and to view and restore deleted revisions
  • protect and unprotect pages, and to edit admin-protected pages
  • block and unblock users, individual IP addresses and IP address ranges
  • edit the MediaWiki namespace
  • rename files
  • add and remove usergroups
  • configure Upload Wizard campaigns
  • delete and undelete specific log entries and revisions of pages
  • import pages from other wikis
  • merge the history of pages
  • modify abuse filters
  • not create redirects from source pages when moving pages
  • override the spoofing checks and title or username blacklist
  • send a message to multiple users at once (massmessage)
  • use higher limits in API queries

These are collectively known as the admin tools.

Community role

Administrators are experienced and trusted members of the Commons community who have taken on additional maintenance work and have been entrusted with the admin tools by public consensus/vote. Different admins have different areas of interest and expertise, but typical admin tasks include determining and closing deletion requests, deleting copyright violations, undeleting files where necessary, protecting Commons against vandalism, and working on templates and other protected pages. Of course, some of these tasks can be done by non-admins as well.

Administrators are expected to understand the goals of this project, and be prepared to work constructively with others towards those ends. Administrators should also understand and follow Commons' policies, and where appropriate, respect community consensus.

Apart from roles which require use of the admin tools, administrators have no special editorial authority by virtue of their position, and in discussions and public votes their contributions are treated in the same way as any ordinary editor. Of course, some admins are influential, but that derives not from their position as such but from the personal trust they have gained from the community.

Suggestions for administrators

Removal of administrator rights

Under the de-admin policy, administrator rights may be revoked due to inactivity or misuse of sysop tools.

Apply to become an administrator

First, go to Commons:Administrators/Howto and read the information there. Then come back here and make your request in the section below.

  • After clicking on the appropriate button and creating the subpage, copy the link to the subpage, e.g. "Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username", edit Commons:Administrators/Requests and paste it in at the top of the section, then put it in double curly brackets (e.g. {{Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username}} ) to transclude it.
  • If someone else nominated you, please accept the nomination by stating "I accept" or something similar, and signing below the nomination itself. The subpage will still need to be transcluded by you or your nominator.
Use the box below, replacing Username with your username:

Voting

Any registered user may vote here although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted. It is preferable if you give reasons both for Symbol support vote.svg Support votes or Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose ones as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to an argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.

Promotion normally requires at least 75% in favour, with a minimum of 8 support votes. Votes from unregistered users are not counted. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers.

Symbol neutral vote.svg Neutral comments are not counted in the vote totals for the purposes of calculating pass/fail percentages. However such comments are part of the discussion, may persuade others, and contribute to the closing bureaucrat's understanding of community consensus.

Requests for adminship

When complete, pages listed here should be archived to Commons:Administrators/Archive.

  • Please read Commons:Administrators before voting here. Any logged in user may vote, although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted.

Axpde (de-adminship)

Vote

Axpde (talk · contributions · deleted user contributions · recent activity · logs · block log · global contribs · SULinfo)

Scheduled to end: 14:06, (UTC)

I hereby kindly request to remove sysop rights of Axpde as a result of this discussion on the administrators' noticeboard and the following consensus amongst the participants of that discussion to start a desysop request.

The reason why the sysop flag should be removed is the loss of confidence in Axpde as a sysop on Commons after he acted out of process by lifting a legitimate user block without any consultation with the blocking admin, as a result of a private canvassing on German wikipedia. Whereas this fact standalone is not yet a reason to request an immediate desysop, the follow-up discussion has finally confirmed the extremely uncollegial approach by Axpde: he is not willing to admit any of his faults, but instead considering it necessary to use ad hominem arguments ("A.Savin is biased", "just have a look at A.Savin's edits in dewiki", "Admins with less than 6 years experience" etc. pp.) and to write additional inflammatory comments against users who criticized him (straightly requesting a block).

From my point, this all is an evidence that Axpde better should not be a sysop, as he obviously does not really know how a sysop should interact with his colleagues, and as there is no willingness to reflect. Note also that Axpde is otherwise hardly active with the flag, with just a dozen of admin actions this year. Thanks --A.Savin 14:06, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

  1. User:A.Savin is biased. He's picking on me ever since, don't know why. Now he wants to delete my pictures, see Special:PrefixIndex/File:St._Michael_-_innen.
  2. The lifting of this so-called "legitimate user block" has already been resolved. The blocking admin User:Christian Ferrer has first reblocked User:Tuvalkin (which is called "wheel warring") and then unblocked the user, after the situation had been cleared. Ergo the initial reason for the discussion on the administrators' noticeboard is null and void!
  3. Who of you really read the private canvassing on German wikipedia? User:Useddenim asked "Would you mind giving an uninvolved opinion?" - which I did in his case, I asked User:Christian Ferrer to remove the block but didn't get a response - aside the witch hunt ...
  4. The "extremely uncollegial approach" of several users calling me "foolish" do I consider "ad hominem" but he kept picking on me.
  5. It wasn't me who claimed "six admins with more experience" - I just proved User:Natuur12 was wrong!
  6. "additional inflammatory comments against users who criticized him" - is another distortion of facts. It was *one* user who called me "foolish" - that's not criticism, that's harassment!
  7. I am highly showing "willingness to reflect" but it's hard to do so, if some users keep picking on me on and on and on. I several times wrote that from my uninvolved point of view the block in question was a "clear mistake" which is covered by the policy!
  8. Only few admin actions are due to the fact that there is a life outside wikimedia and shouldn't be taken into consideration!

Résumé: I reverted a block of User:Christian Ferrer who meanwhile unblocked the user himself, sorry if that did harm you, but all the rest is a ridiculous witch hunt! a×pdeHello! 20:24, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

For the record, experience != the number of years one holds the tools and I just genuinely believe that when 6 admins who are more involved with the project state that something is wrong you will have to do some serious addressing. Natuur12 (talk) 20:29, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
Well, you should have talked with Christian about it first, and presented all your above arguments. Now it is too late from my point, and I'm really tired to read the statement "A.Savin is biased" in EVERY comment of yours, even regarding the tagged files. This German proverb with "Getretner Quark" comes me to mind, every time I read your statements.
The only thing where I'm biased: Yes, I sincerely think that Christian is a gentleman and you are not. --A.Savin 20:47, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

«The other» being User:Useddenim. Regardless of all else, I’d like to see User:Christian Ferrer’s two part statement above explained and analyzed. Not only the 2nd sentence seems to contradict the 1st, but the 1st seems to be a petty and mean-spirited call for drama an fruitless blaming. -- Tuválkin 00:38, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Symbol delete vote.svg Remove because of the recent incidents. I am not a fan of immediately de-sysoping users, but i am highly concerned about what happens recently and i have to admit that i never seen an admin behaving like he did. Apart from the aforementioned concerns, i am shocked about his un-collegal, rude and disruptive (i am not a fan of using such adjectives) conduct here. (By the way: Axpde was elected with 8 support (4 votes are looking like canvassing, see Commons:Administrators/Requests/Axpde). --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:27, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Symbol delete vote.svg Remove I am not fond that when he was confronted, he was still being defensive. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 15:54, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Symbol delete vote.svg Remove - Lifting a block without any discussion is enough to warrant desysopping, We all makes mistakes and all that but as noted above instead of admitting them and taking the ANI discussion on-board he just got the mindset of "he's right we're wrong" which doesn't help at all, We have better admins here who are more than capable of ... well being admins ... so nothing of value is lost. –Davey2010Talk 16:00, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Symbol delete vote.svg Remove - rather inexperienced admin (I counted 35 admin actions over the past year) causing a lot of trouble - apparently unable to de-escalate when somebody gives feedback on an admin action (most colleagues here are able to forgive mistakes if communicating about those mistakes is possible) - the balance of having Axpde admin here is negative to the project, all the attention this case needs costs way more time and energy than the very few admin actions save the other admins - Jcb (talk) 20:43, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Symbol delete vote.svg Remove due to recent events, refusal to apologize and get the point, poor use on tools, and even don't understand what experience really means. Experience maybe similar to time, but not proportional nor equal to time. This admin should have apologized and admitted their mistake rather than being so defensive (with ad hominem) that results in a de-adminship, which is this one. -- Poké95 10:46, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

Scheduled to end: 04:04, (UTC)

It's been just about a year since my meltdown of last July. What happened was that I became too emotionally involved in my efforts to stop Russavia from socking. I wasn't stable or mellow at the time, and so I ended up doing things that were unacceptable, dramatic, and uncalled for. As some speculated at the time, my actions started with a complete over-reaction to an account that Russavia created called Snitches get stitches. I took this as being directed at me, and I went off the deep end over it. My blocks of Fae and Stemoc were out of line and unacceptable. They were petty revenge blocks without a whole lot of thought behind them. I haven't apologized directly to Fae or Stemoc, thinking they'd rather not see or hear much from me, but I certainly do regret those actions, which were completely undeserved and were very immature of me. My deletions of Russavia sock uploads caused a lot of extra work for my fellow admins as well, and I hope they know that I didn't mean to cause them such a hassle.

If the community is willing to give me a last shot at adminship, I can say without a doubt that there would be no repeat of any of the above. I still remember seeing the de-admin and not knowing if I even wanted to continue editing as INeverCry out of embarrassment. I decided to own my extremely poor decisions and move on without trying to hide under a new account. I'll sink or swim as INC. As for Fae and Stemoc, I would not take any admin action in cases involving them in the future under any circumstances. I spoke to Russavia via email 6+ months ago, and we buried the hatchet. I wouldn't take any admin action where he's concerned either if I'm re-granted adminship by the community. I would also make it a point to continue to avoid my old confrontational behavior as I have for quite a while now.

If the community decides to give me another chance at adminship, my main focus would be on helping to keep the DR backlog down and deleting copyvios. I know now that I really used to overdo it hunting sockpuppets and obsessing on them. My approach would be much more laid back now and I would spend very little time in that area of admin work. I hope the community is willing to forgive me that horrid July night last year and give me a shot at being a Commons admin again, a position of trust that I just didn't realize the full value of in the past. Support or oppose, I thank the community for its consideration. INeverCry 04:04, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Symbol support vote.svg Support. Congrats for being mature enough to rethink your past mistakes. Most will do wrong, but too few will admit and learn with that. • Symbol support vote.svg Support - Being honest I don't think I'd support anyone at EN who had a meltdown etc etc etc however INC is a valuable editor/admin here and to be fair we all make mistakes which he's admitted, Plus he was always active at DR and keeping the backlogs down which was extremely helpful and I know DR is a painful task, The only thing I would suggest INeverCry is that if things get too much just walk away for a bit, Anyway 100% Support!. –Davey2010Talk 12:31, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

  • A.Savin makes a completely valid point. I honestly feel that I'm over my old drama and nonsense, but only time will serve to convince others of this. All I can say is that, whether this readmin request succeeds or not, I'll continue participating here in a calm and steady manner. I feel better with no drama, and I don't doubt Commons has had enough of my past drama too. One thing I figured out through my de-sysop was how much I really enjoy being here and working on Commons, and that my drama and impulsive retirements and comebacks only ever got in the way of that. When I came online this morning and saw the support votes, it certainly made me feel a lot better than any of my old nonsense ever did. INeverCry 23:15, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

We have no other admin, who had retired and came back so often as INC. A lot of users, including me, have said him (without any effect) not to retire so often. I think, that taking couple of months for wikibreak is totally normal and does not need putting down admin rights. Actually I do not believe, that INC adminship will last more than a year, but I feel, that even during this time he will be generally useful to the project. I promise: this is the last time, when I will support INC, next time I will oppose. Taivo (talk) 10:52, 25 June 2016 (UTC)
