No, butterflies don't have friends. I don't know the time of day when the photo was taken, but the water droplets indicate it could be early morning. Butterflies do perch close together overnight. Early morning can be a good time to get a close up before they are warm enough to fly. Some photographers use painted backgrounds for these shots, but I don't know if that was done here or in the more recent FPC nomination.
