Request: Cleanup; This is the cover of an issue of Weird Tales that was sold at the Stowe Book Shop, at the corner of Morrison and Front Street, in Portland. I know this because they stamped "STOWE BOOK SHOP, Morrison and Front St, Portland" on the cover, twice: once right by the price-and-month (lower right corner), and once just overlapping the head of the woman in the illustration. Request: Cleanup; This version of the cover of Adventures Into Darkness is much larger and higher-resolution than the previous one. However, it's also got some stains on the ghoul, and his victim, and the witness (and there's a blotch above the letter 'o' in the word "into", and a date stamped on the full moon - but the blotches below the words "Adventure Into Darkness" are supposed to be there). magazine cover: some areas need to be brightened

Request: Hello. I uploaded this obscure mag cover yesterday. Notice how the top, left and bottom section are too dark. The light portion is from the middle-right to far-right straight down. I was hoping the darkened sections could be lightened up a spec, without making that mentioned med-lower right section more lighter. I'd like the brightness level to BLEND IN and not be so noticeable, as is now the case. I only have a basic image editor and can't do this on my own (nor have the know-how). Thanks. Thanks for your efforts @PawełMM: . I did darken it just slightly, so the borders show up and don't blend into the white screen backdrop. But, that could just be my personal preference. I wonder though, why you had to create a separate file named "Good Hardware SLC (retouched)", instead of just making the change notation on the original file named "Good Hardware SLC." I was really hoping the graphic lab's work would be noted on that one only, instead of creating an alternating file (especially since the image's integrity was not compromised in any way). BTW. SLC = Salt Lake City. The most famous magazine with that title was produced in NYC. IOWs. Can one of these two similar be deleted. JimPercy (talk) 18:34, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, but this did not remove any CA. It removed shadows (and part of the window). CA is the [often purple] color that sometimes appears at points of high contrast (like the edge of a window). See also: Commons:Photography_terms#Chromatic_aberration. Removing CA is tricky, but typically involves some level of changing the color/desaturation. Happy to elaborate if it helps. In the meantime, I've uploaded a new version, based on the original. - Sorry, but as I mentioned above, I had already uploaded a new version which addressed the CA. The thick lines running through the middle of the windows are shadows, not CA. Compare the windows in this original version and this one -- it's just the purple fringe along the edges of the window. @PawełMM and Hanooz: Sometimes Lightroom's sliders let you remove it easily as "defringe", but if there is a lot of purple/blue in the rest of the image, the sliders can cause problems. For more precise removal you can use Photoshop. The method I use (if it's helpful): open the file, duplicate the layer, apply 15 pixel gaussian blur to the new layer, decrease the overall saturation a little bit, set the new layer's mode to "color", add a layer mask, invert the layer mask. So at that point just the original image should be visible. Then use a small white brush with 60% opacity to paint over the purple parts as needed. There may be a better way (and sometimes you can just use a desaturation brush), but I find that works well to get the color right in most situations, and the steps become quite quick once you've done it a few times. — Rhododendrites ^talk | 14:40, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Rhododendrites. Yes I have, although unfortunately, CropTool doesn't incorporate image upscaling. This is my mobile account, and indeed it's fairly difficult to upscale images on my device. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 20:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

@Neveselbert (mobile): Please note that upscaling images is usually not advisable as it does not increase the amount of image data but it does increase the file size and can also increase generation loss. Request: Cleaning; First, there's an "X" drawn on the original document, just above the "Captain Future" star on the left side of the page. Second: There's a "9"-looking loop drawn on the original document, just to the right of the "Woman in Red" star, and overlapping the "American Flag" emblem. It would be useful if those could be removed. As well, when I cropped the extraneous bits (see file history) from the upload with CropTool, I accidentally used Precise mode; it might be better to do the corrections on the original cropped losslessly instead, but I honestly don't know how much of a difference that would make to the quality. Interested to know whether there is a means of reducing the moire pattern on this. The pattern seems regular & so it seems like there ought to be atechnique for remediating it, but, what do I know about graphics? (not much.) To muddy the water somewhat, my query related to the older version of this image - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/c/c6/20210215013218%21Anna_Morris_Holstein.png - over which I've now loaded a less moired image. So request amended to: if the second image is to be used, can it be less yellow, please, and could we sort out its lesser moire pattern. retouched image

Hello. I uploaded this People's Home Journal cover in Oct. of last year. It's referred to in the WP article "Paul Martin (illustrator)." That's because the woman model is the cover artist's (Martin) mother-in-law. Anyway, there are darker areas along all the edges and corners. I was hoping those darkened sections could be lightened up a spec, and that it would all better BLEND IN (with the rest). Also, please don't alter or change the image in any way, that a new file name would be needed. I don't think that is necessary anyway, since the focus and alignment are fairly strong. Thanks. @PawełMM: Thanks for your efforts. I certainly couldn't get the colors to bend-in like that, with my basic image editor. However, note my request that a separate file not be created. I understand that's necessary if the image was altered, but not for lightening the edges. Those darker areas were caused by the camera shot of the magazine being sub-par (due to lack of light). I am hoping you might if possible, just transfer the retouched image onto the original ( People's,Nov.1928 ) and place a speedy deletion tag on the other ( People's,Nov.1928 (retouched) ). @PseudoSkull: We'd also need to replace the metadata as well because the file would no longer be the IA version. As a question, why is this necessary? There is already an index page for the PDF on Wikisource and the previous DJVU had a Google cover page so the pages would still need to be shifted even if the new DJVU was created. magazine cover: white stripe margin on right side needs to blend downward naturally

Hello. I'm the original uploader of this image, back several years ago. I gave away the mag since then. It's important to preserve because it shows how the artist worked (from multiple photos taken during photo session). The problem is that the mid-lower right margin doesn't look natural. I would like the white-striped margin on the far-right of the boy's head (esp. starting on the far right of the boy's lower lip), going straight downward to the far right corner, BLEND IN naturally. Notice how in my old attempt to clean it up, an odd, very-noticeable stripe is there. I don't have the editing skill to have it blend in naturally, by becoming increasingly darker, spec at a time, until reaching the far-lower right corner. Please DON'T CREATE A NEW FILE NAME. After all, my request is not to alter the image in any way, but rather to touch up only along the white border of the mag. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 18:23, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

@Nagualdesign: That was a tremendous improvement! I regretted using that yellow backdrop cardboard when taking the original photo, but I didn't know how to get rid of or change it to a more passive color. Right about the boy model (same kid in all three snapshots). The artist's WP article in Ref. section: "The boy is holding a matchbox on a paintbrush stick, in lieu of a flower." The artist didn't have a flower handy during the photo shoot, hence the substitute. If one looks real close, a part of all three photos of the boy, ended up in the final product (the magazine cover). I'm glad you like it. Yes, I could see how the different elements were combined, and how they'd used a prop in order to get the shape of the hand (bottom image, I reckon). Splitting Images of Hamlet Quartos

Comment Languageseeker: this is something you can do by using "CropTool" yourself as there seems to be a lot of work in your request but it is simple for you to do. The CropTool can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. For major crops like you want, you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image. @Languageseeker: In my opinion, this work is pointless. The tiff files after cutting out the relevant part, processing and converting to png do not produce a file with better resolution. I assume they were extracted from tiff files. The slight differences in file size are the result of slightly different cropping. I have made three files and see no point in further work. Request: I've gotten involved trying to improve this article regarding the disturbing death of a mentally ill inmate in Florida. These photos were leaked to the Miami Herald after the official investigations had completed. They were taken with different cameras and lighting conditions and don't show the true skin color that was described by witnesses (yellowing for post-mortem burns and red for burns that occured while his heart was still beating.) The flash on the autopsy table has turned large patches pure white while while his true unaffected skin color looks grey. The time between the two sets is less than 24 hours and the body was overheated so some post-mortem changes are to be expected.

The first two from the prison infirmary are more color accurate but somewhat underexposed. The goal would be to give these photos the best color fidelity and uniformity. A search for higher resolution source images which may involve contacting the reporter at the Herald could be initiated.--Technophant (talk) 04:00, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

PawełMM, thank you so much! It now shows the yellow color mentioned in the investigative notes. He was found face up covering the the drain in several inches of hot water. The guard said he refused to get into the hot stream of water but they made false statements and tried to cover it up including the medical examiner so they could've shoved him into it at some point while alive. A prisoner overheard that they planned on leaving him in there for 8 hours but he collapsed after an hour and a half and was left in the water for up to 10 minutes after the water was shut off while the guards tried to come up with a plan to explain what happened. I'm telling you this to help you understand the pattern of injuries, ie his legs would've seemed to have gotten burned by the rising hot water after his heart stopped creating yellow burns instead of red.

I think the torso autopsy table came out well but could you adjust contrast and exposure on the other two to match better? It would be good if the unaffected skin areas (lower abdomen, back of neck, upper left back of thigh) matched his original medium brown skin color. Also, can you do an auto-background remove to make a layer just the table then adjust separately to make the blue table look more like it would be if it weren't affected by flash glare (if it's not too difficult)? @Technophant: It seems to me that further processing of these photos will not give better results than you expect. The color processing changes the color of the whole picture. It is even more difficult to do it in such a way that the colors of several photos are similar. That is why in my opinion I would leave it as it is and not change anything. Please take the advice that others have provided and familiarize yourself with Commons upload policy.

I suggest that you focus on what you're trying to achieve. Request: Image needs to be cropped slightly at the top to remove the words "Fisher & Paykel". To be fair, this is actually a brand name on the refrigerator that she happens to be standing in front of, but it looks like a violation of our rule against proprietary watermarks on the photograph if you don't already recognize "Fisher & Paykel" as the name of an appliance brand — so it's best to just crop it out now, rather than risk constant back-and-forthing about whether it needs to be deleted for violating the watermark rule. A word of warning: This will take a lot of effort to achieve, since the sections appear to have no overlap, and what you'll end up with will be a very unwieldy file. I recently made this hi-res map of the Perseverance rover landing site, which is 'only' 12,500px × 12,500px (~156 megapixels). Having made it, simply trying to upload it to Commons caused repeated crashes (in the end I used bigChunkedUpload), and unfortunately the file is almost useless due to many browsers hanging while attempting to download it, or not even bothering to try. I naively thought that people would be able to easily download, zoom in and pan around like they were using Google Maps. I can see now why map websites don't try to squeeze one massive image down the network connection. It's a silly idea. Although I do think that having such a complete map, as you're suggesting, might be a valued asset some time in the future, just not in 2021. nagualdesign 01:08, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

I understand the warning but the zoomify viewer, when it works (there is indeed a problem in that site at the moment), is quite useful and seeing some of these images in context is very useful. I'm impressed that PawełMM managed to create such a large image with such a relatively small filesize (~93MB). I also copied the {{LargeImage}} template to the Perseverance rover location map, so thanks for that. However, when I tried to download the full-size image on my laptop I was treated to a black screen for approximately 50 seconds, followed by nothing but a small, white square in the centre of the screen. I don't want to put anyone off creating a stitched image, and the lower-resolution versions will be quite useful I suppose, I just wanted to make sure you understood the problems with very large images. nagualdesign 01:00, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

@Nagualdesign and Shyamal: I tried to do this. After merging the individual images into one, the resulting xcf file is over 1 gigabyte. An exact match is nearly impossible. Further work is refused by my computer as conversion to jpg causes it to hang. PawełMM (talk) 09:24, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

@GPinkerton: I would not want to change anything in the coin images anymore. Blurring the edges spoils the image.To get the effect you require would require repeating all the work, and the expected effect is probably not worth it. In jpg format, unfortunately you can't remove the background as in the example given, because it doesn't support transparency. PawełMM (talk) 06:47, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Request: Does anyone think it's possible to crop this so that only the artwork on the plate is visible? If the file's description is correct, then the artwork on the plate is most likely {{PD-Art}} and {{PD-US-expired}}. There's no way, however, to verify that the photo is {{PD-US-no notice}} since there no real attribution provided per the source website. Moreover, the file's EXIF data also says the photo was taken in 2011 which means "PD-US-no notice" wouldn't apply at all if that's when the photo was taking. If this can't be suitably cropped (i.e. remove all 3D elements of the plate) for Commons purposes, the file will most likely needed to be deleted absent COM:VRT verification of the photographer's COM:CONSENT. So, if it can be cropped, then great; if not, then there's not much else to do. This is a bit similar to the cropping out of a picture frame per {{Non-free frame}}, but not as straightforward due to the circular shape and 3D parts of the plate. --Marchjuly (talk) 06:28, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

At the moment, File:Pils - Rouget de Lisle chantant la Marseillaise.jpg has the highest resolution and the widest usage and cites the museum website Musée historique de Strasbourg, but the image there is much better: the painting itself may have been cleaned or the lighting is simply much better. The existing photo is unforgivably dark, rendering swathes of detail indistinct or invisible. But the available image on the website is much lower resolution, so I am loath to overwrite the file. Is there a way of retouching the existing image to make it look more like the museum version? Alternatively, is it possible that a higher resolution image of the museum's photo can be found? @GPinkerton: In my opinion, there is no good way to improve these illustrations with retouching. Any retouching is an intrusion and changes, sometimes drastically, the original. The illustration on the museum website has a lower resolution but much more recognizable detail and is better in color. Request: Need colour correction for these images. These images either have too much yellow or too much blue (can't tell) and do not match higher quality Defense Department portraits of the 1990s. In particular, the portrait of LTG Waller, from the Lewis Army Museum website, comes from a series of official Army portraits with disjointed colouring (see the bottom part). Request: These details of objects in the painting w:The Ambassadors (Holbein) are JPEGs cropped from a 30K pixel scan of the full painting; much higher resolution versions could be made by combining parts of the the nine tiled versions of the painting.; These images are extremely large and I don't know how to manipulate them myself. If possible the crops should be in PNG rather than JPEG so there is no quality loss from the tiles.; The ones linked in the request are just the images used in the English Wikipedia page; there are many more to fix in Category:Details of The Ambassadors (Holbein).
