Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Hi Julia mji. I've tagged this file as lacking proper permission. I've done this because the logo can be seen used online here and the bottom of that website states "© 2018 by JM Art Management" which means all content on that website needs to be considered under copyright protection.

Commons is unable to accept any such content without the explicit consent of the copyright holder. If, by chance, that is you then please follow the instructions in COM:OTRS#Licensing images: when do I contact OTRS?; on the other hand, if it's not you, please follow the instructions given in COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder.

Please understand that this type of verification is necessary to not only protect Commons, but also to protect the rights of the copyright holder. Anyone can basically create a Commons account and claim to be someone they might not be, so something more formal than a verbal statement is required for verification purposes. This is also because the types of copyright licenses accepted by Commons basically mean that the original copyright holder is agreeing in advance to allow anyone anywhere in the world to download the file at anytime and use for any purpose, including commercial and derivative use. The copyright holder can require that those who download the content state where they got it from, but that's about it. Moreover, once a file has been verified to have been released under a license, there are no take-backs or do-overs if the copyright holder subsequently changes their mind. So, if by chance, you are the original copyright holder and the creator of this logo, please be absolutely sure that you're OK with these terms. The first thing you should try to do is always log in when you edit just because it makes it clear that you are the same person (at least using the same account). Also, editing from an IP address is actually less anonymous than editing from a registered account. Anyone can see the IP address and look it up online, but only certain vetted editors have the ability to see the IP address a registered account is using.

Regarding the licensing, if you're the copyright holder, you can release under any of the free licenses accepted by Commons. You can find some of these listed at COM:CC; however, you need to understand that by doing so you're bascially giving advance permission for anyone to use the logo as they please, including to make money off of in someway. Releasing the content under a free license does not mean you're giving up copyright ownership over it or transfering the copyright to Commons, and you still can en:trademark the content; you're basically agreeing to release the content under a type of copyright license that makes it easier for others to use. You can of course set some terms related to how the file may be used, but the licenses accepted by Commons are not very restrictive and don't offer much control to the copyright holder. I suggest you Google this kind of thing to make sure it's what you want to do. If it is, then follow the instructions on the pages I linked in my previous post or given in the above template; if it's not, then simply wait a few days and this file will be deleted by an adminstrator. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:01, 19 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
