First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Пожалуйста, помещайте их не в корень категории Cultural heritage monuments in Saint Petersburg, а в Old buildings of Saint Petersburg Polytechnical University. В связи с замечанием одной из организаторов конкурса поясняю: это совершенно необязательно, пользоваться предложенным гаджетом рекомендую (сам это делаю), но если у вас будет время и желание разобраться, то имеет смысл попробовать эти фотографии переложить в подкатегорию. Если же термины "гаджет" или "категория" не говорят вам ровным счётом ничего, просто не обращайте внимания на это сообщение. Во всяком случае, не следует думать, что вы что-то сделали неправильно. Though the collection of images for the contest has been completed (as we informed you previously), the organizers of the contest "Wikipedia loves Petersburg" are glad to update you on the current course of events.

Our jury is working hard; on November, 1 it will declare the winners and the recipients of special prizes. We ask those of you who have not yet set up an e-mail address to do it at user preferences page so that the jury could contact the participants of the contest and to hand out the awards. The winners of the European-wide Wiki Loves Monuments competition will be announced later, in mid-November.

Already on November 2 in St. Petersburg, the Art-hotel "Rachmaninov", located on 5, Kazanskaya St., will open an exhibition of works by the participants of the contest. We inform you about the opening time via the website http://wikilovesmonuments.ru/

"Wikipedia loves Petersburg" contest results are summed up edit

On November, 1 the winners of the contest "Wiki Loves Monuments" were announced.

It was difficult to select the winners. More than 450 users participated in the contest, having uploaded more than 4400 photographs. The Organizing Committee thanks everybody who took part, tried their hands, and agreed to make their work available to the whole world. There is fascinating work ahead of Wikipedia users: To employ the images to illustrate the articles in Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia which is available in 270 languages.

Do not get upset if you have not won. Look into Wikipedia articles - you may soon find your work there, to help people to visualise the buildings you have taken photographs of. Besides, we will contact you to hand you in a souvenir to recognize your particiation. We hope you will accept this sign of our gratitude.

If you have a chance, you can visit the exhibition of photographs, which has been organized in Saint Petersburg and shows some of the photographs submitted to the contest.

We hope you will participate in the future competitions planned by Wikimedia RU and thank you for your contribution.

Большое спасибо за Ваши фотографии Астрахани и Волгограда. К сожалению, некоторые волгоградские фотографии мне придётся вынести на удаление. Дело в том, что в России нет свободы панорамы, то есть здание защищено авторскими правами 70 лет после смерти автора, в частности, Мамаев Курган, а фотографии таких зданий нельзя загружать на Викисклад. Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Ludushka,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Wiki Loves Monuments ti aspetta, con centinaia di nuovi comuni fotografabili edit

Concorso Wiki Loves Monuments Italia 2018 (English version)

Gentile Ludushka, ti ringraziamo ancora una volta per la tua passata partecipazione a Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM). Il più grande concorso fotografico del mondo si svolge anche questo settembre per documentare e promuovere il patrimonio culturale italiano, con una licenza copyright libera.

Quest'anno è doppiamente facile partecipare: gli oggetti fotografabili coprono quasi 1000 comuni in più, grazie all'adesione di centinaia di nuovi enti fra cui Roma, e alla possibilità di fotografare circa 2000 alberi monumentali. Controlla le liste di monumenti fotografabili! Carica tutte le foto che hai e magari organizza una visita presso i monumenti che ancora non hanno una foto.

Quest'oggi il Parlamento europeo ha respinto la proposta di estendere la libertà di panorama. E allora scattiamo e pubblichiamo tutte le foto che possiamo, almeno per questi monumenti per cui ci è legalmente consentito!

Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019 edit

Bonjour,

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est de retour et ouvert jusqu'à 31 septembre ! Déjà 8310 photos ont été importés cette année, vous aussi rejoignez le concours !

Le concours concerne tous les monuments présents dans la base Mérimée (qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement classés). De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la chapelle au coin de la rue aux mégalithes en forêt, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Où que vous soyez il y a des monuments autour de chez vous. Enfin, vous pouvez mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments. Pour information, le règlement est disponible sur le site du concours. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international sélectionnera ensuite des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.

oggi ti scrivo a nome dell'associazione Wikimedia Italia per ringraziarti di aver partecipato a Wiki Loves Monuments Italia. Il tuo contributo è particolarmente apprezzato perché le tue foto sono usate in 5 o più voci di Wikipedia o altro progetto Wikimedia.

Come piccolo omaggio avremmo piacere di spedirti una copia (tutta in carta riciclata) del libro di Carlo Piana, Open source, software libero e altre libertà. Fornisci un recapito per ricevere una copia del libro.

Il libro comprende anche un capitolo sul tuo lavoro! Si parla infatti di libertà di panorama, cioè la libertà di fare e diffondere foto come le tue, ma tutto l'anno e su tutti i monumenti d'Italia. Finché resta la legge attuale, per aumentare le foto caricabili puoi chiedere a un ente vicino a te di aderire a Wiki Loves Monuments. Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est ouvert pour une semaine encore, jusqu'au 30 septembre. Déjà plus de 6 000 photos ont été importées cette année alors vous aussi rejoignez le concours ! Cette campagne de contribution concerne tous les monuments et objets mobiliers présents dans la base Mérimée et dans la base Palissy. De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la verrière décorative au reliquaire, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Vous pouvez dès à présent mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments et objets du patrimoine français. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !
