Hello, Pjt56!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

What are VI edit

Hello, Thanks for your interest in Valued Images project. Be aware that Valued Images are not the same as Quality Images. In peculiar, technical quality isn't of such importance. VI rules say: For photographs, the quality achievable using the built-in camera in a modern mobile phone should normally be good enough. The image must look good on-screen at the review size. VI must meet these 6 criteria. A VI is the most valuable illustration of all images on Commons which fall within the scope of the nomination. Note that most valuable does not necessarily imply the best technical quality. Valued images are less about perfect technical quality and more about your ingenuity in finding good and valuable subjects which matter, and about the useability of the information on the image page, see Valued image value for further details. --Myrabella (talk) 10:07, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thanks for uploading File:CKLee Stuttgart 5.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Cyclamen hederifolium in Sardinia edit

Dear,

It is indeed a Cyclamen hederifolium or its var. confusum (Syn. C. confusum). It is not possible to differentiate them without looking at the leave.

Another possible cyclamen should be C. africanum, which however does not occur in Europe.

If you want, I can rename your file (I am a "filemover").

Best regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 19:09, 17 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dear,
In the meantime I have renamed it accordingly.
FYI: I have 5 Cyclamen species in my garden (mid-Belgium): C. hederifolium, C. coum, C. cilicium, C. purpurascens and C. pseudibericum. The first two are strong growing and sowed by ants, so that these species are widespread in my garden. C. coum is now blooming with the first crocuses (C. imperati 'De Jager' and C. sieberi 'Bowles White').

Vespula - Dolichovespula edit

Hi Pjt56, Vespula vulgaris-pjt6.jpg zeigt eine Langkopfwespe. Vermutlich Dolichovespula saxonica.

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Panoramabilder edit

--Kreuzschnabel 07:42, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Copyvio by an Icelandic business edit

Hi Pjt56, as you were writing on File:Reykjavík-pjt1.jpg you appreciate a notice if someone finds your picture on a site other than Wikipedia. So look at http://taxipickup.is/iceland-tours/ on the bottom right. I find them using a number of CC-licensed files on their site with neither attribution nor mentioning the license, including a pic by me, which is why I was writing them 4 times (!) since 2015. One time they responded promising to have their "website manager" fix this, but nothing happened and I happen to get fed by them and willing to hire a lawyer. What do you think? Would you possibly join, also maybe helping to contact others whose copyrights apparently have been violated by that business to have them join? I have no experience yet with the Icelandic lawyer sector but there seem to be some lawyers in Reykjavik around who have specialized in copyright issues. Beschde Grüße aussem Remstal ;) --dealerofsalvation 17:17, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Remstäler, thanks for notifying me about those guys. Yes, if we find others to join I'd be willing to spend a moderate amount of money. In other cases companies who were for one reason or another not able or willing to publish copyright information offered to pay me a reasonable fee - which I usually accepted :-) Maybe we should try that first: send them an invoice ... Best regards from the Landeshauptstadt, --Pjt56 (talk) 17:41, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the idea, I'll think about it, but in my previous polite mails I was telling them I was not interested in money but in proper attribution so I'm not yet sure if I'll change my mind about that ... but if you want you can go ahead and send them an invoice on your behalf. BTW at User:Dealerofsalvation/taxipickup.is Copyvios I'm systematically investigating more copyvios by them. --dealerofsalvation 19:49, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Unerwünschte Zusatzangaben in den Infobox-Feldern edit

Hallo Pjt56,

--Arch2all (talk) 14:07, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Update on usage of 2 images of the Papyrus edit

Per your request, this is to let you know that I am using 2 of your images of the Papayrus (File:Cyperus papyrus-pjt2.jpg, File:Cyperus papyrus-pjt4.jpg) in the website http://alamapa.com/ (a website in Hebrew focused on mapping the Bible), specifically in the page for the biblical Papyrus (http://alamapa.com/bplant/%d7%92%d7%9e%d7%90).

Thanks, --Aaadir (talk) 06:22, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I was very pleased to find this image to use. I am a Bible teacher in the Republic of Moldova. We are studying the book of Exodus and I was looking for an image of papyrus to include in my worksheet. Yours was the best image I found. Thank you for making it available. - Jacob September 22, 2022 — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 188.131.119.232 (talk) 08:44, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hallo Pjt56,

Identification update for File:Rhysella approximator-pjt1.jpg, -pjt2.jpg, and -pjt3.jpg edit

Hi Pjt56, I just wanted to drop by since you had requested identification review for these images. These are actually some species of Dolichomitus (Ichneumonidae: Pimplinae: Ephialtini). This genus in particular is often mistaken for various Rhyssinae due to the very long ovipositors. The easiest way to separate them is that Rhyssinae such as Rhyssella always have transverse ridges on the mesoscutum, which is almost never found outside of the subfamily (with a rare exception of Pseudorhyssa). The -pjt2.jpg image is incredibly useful here since the sculpturing of the mesoscutum is visible (with punctures and notauli, but no transverse ridges). Gorgeous detail, by the way! I've already updated the IDs on the files but wanted to make sure you got the notes directly. Cheers! Lhikan634 (talk) 01:28, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lhikan634, thanks for your helpful input! It is good to have an additional expert source for the identification of insects. The guys at www.entomologie.de who I contact routinely remained silent on those images, so I searched the web myself, knowing well that identifying wasps based on photos is risky. May I get back to you if I have other problem cases in the future?
BTW, I have a bunch of other photos of the insect. What would you need to see to determine the species? Best, Pjt56 (talk) 06:46, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm always happy to assist where I can. Wasps are very species rich, though, so how much I can help is going to vary depending on the family or even genus, for instance. I don't have a key to Dolichomitus of your area on hand, and it's often fairly species rich (9 spp. in the UK, for instance). Off the top of my head, one very similar species is D. imperator, but I believe other similar species like D. mesocentrus are also in range. Lhikan634 (talk) 08:59, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
I did find a key, but I'm completely lost with many of the technical terms. If you'd find the time and nerves to delve into it, I'd appreciate it very much. Pjt56 (talk) 12:18, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
So, the first node of the key to females referring to the dorsal lobe is a part of the very tip of the ovipositor. This alone means that there's probably no chance of keying out the species. What we normally view as the ovipositor is really just the 2 parts of the sheath that surround the ovipositor. The ovipositor itself rests within this sheath and is usually thinner than a human hair. So in -pjt3.jpg, the long black protrusion pointing to the left of the image is just the sheath (the actual ovipositor appears to go entirely inside the hole to the right of the image). The ovipositor itself is a lot narrower than the sheath. Using -pjt1.jpg, the sheath is the thicker black protrusion on the abdomen pointed to the left while the ovipositor in the narrower reddish-brown protrusion pointed to the right. The traits in the key, then, are incredibly minute sculpturing on the very tip of the hair-thin ovipositor. I wouldn't expect to be able to see this outside of the lab with a specimen under the microscope. Lhikan634 (talk) 02:33, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot for trying anyway! I found an image that shows some detail:

Does it help? If not, let's call it a day. Pjt56 (talk) 09:43, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Regrettably it isn't clear enough for keying. Even so, this is a remarkable view of the ovipositor tip. It's not common to see this much in photos. Lhikan634 (talk) 01:54, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok - thanks again. Once more it paid off to take and keep as many photos as possible until the identification is finished. Pjt56 (talk) 06:12, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Re: Sphex funerarius edit

Hi Pjt56, S. funerarius as far as I know it has become the main species in the genus found in Germany, and your photo is quite representative of the species. The information on the German Wikipedia page is really about half correct in terms of habitat. They nest in sandy to sparsely vegetated areas, but they take nectar and hunt in surrounding areas that can be more fertile, such as grasslands or even allotments. BWARS (Bees Wasps & Ants Recording Society) has a bit more info. Weiser's 2020 paper should cover the species' biology in greater detail, if you have access to the AES's journals or request the paper from the author. Lhikan634 (talk) 20:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the confirmation, and thanks for the references! I'll have a look at them and perhaps update the Wikipedia text. Pjt56 (talk) 06:29, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
