First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Hi Rana & Sugandhi, thanks for your time and contributions. They are very much appreciated. I have suggestion as to how you might work jointly here without running into objections: that Sugandhi alone should be the Commons account holder, but that copyright should be specified as being held jointly by virtue of an agreement between the two of you, to be lodged with OTRS. If that suggestion would be acceptable, I could very easily prepare a simple one-paragraph agreement for you to sign. I am very sorry for the difficulties you have encountered on Wikimedia Commons, through no fault of your own. We do I am afraid have a certain lack of clarity in some of our policies, which does tend to mean that when contributors want to do something slightly out of the ordinary it can result in a lot of unnecessary drama.

There are two specific points that some editors are concerned about, namely your wish to hold the copyright in your images jointly, and your joint username. Here are my suggestions for handling them:

1. To provide for joint copyright we will need a slightly different declaration from the one that you have sent by email to OTRS. If you could please just reply to the email that I've sent you, that should be an easy matter to fix.

2. I understand from Jee that in practice Sugandhi operates this account on behalf of you both. If that is right, I suggest that you add some wording along the following lines to your user page:

Although the name of the account we use, User:Rana & Sugandhi, refers to both of us, it is in practice operated by Sugandhi who takes responsibility for all edits and uploads. We have made arrangements to hold all of our copyright jointly, and a declaration to that effect is recorded at OTRS under Ticket#2017020610003549.

I am hopeful that something along those lines would have community support, and should allow you to continue contributing without further difficulties.

Just a note to say that although your name is now OK on commons, on some other Wikipedias it will not be allowed. As all Wikipedias have their own policies, I cannot say which ones. Certainly it cannot be used on en-Wikipedia, as such a username is not permitted in the username policy there - en:Wikipedia:Username_policy#Usernames_implying_shared_use.
