Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Hi, please understand that plant species native to other continents und only potted in India or grown in gardens of India do NOT belong to the Flora of India. Therefore Sedum rubrotinctum originating in Mexico, Aloe aristata indigenous to South Africa and Lesotho, Aeonium arboreum native to the Canary Islands etc. do NOT belong to the Flora of Yercaud! You can't make an aquatic plant from a desert plant by throwing it in the sea. It remains an alien there.

Photo-phylles 2017 edit

Hi,

I just found lots of interesting pictures on your pages.

Probably you don't know what is Photo-phylles. It's both an international competition and a pedagogical exhibition organized by the Botanical Garden of Bordeaux, France, and the Association of botanists OÏKOS. The selected photos are shown for more than 4 months in various places and receive each year more than 5,000 visitors, for a half young people coming with their schoolmasters or teachers.

Basella alba & Anredera cordifolia edit

Dear Yercaud-elango

In January 2015 you uploaded 3 photos of what you believed to be Basella alba. I suspect it is actually Anredera cordifolia, which was first reported from India just 3 years earlier, in "Anredera cordifolia (Basellaceae) – An addition to the non-indigenous flora of India". In fact, it was reported from Erode district, which is adjacent to Salem district, which strengthens the possibility that it is what you uploaded. I have added this info at File:Basella alba-1-yercaud-salem-India.JPG. I am pleased to see you are a man of science – you may wish to investigate further. Best wishes. Dear Yercaud-elango, I see that you uploaded a lot of interesting photos (see Files uploaded by Yercaud-elango. But you did not add categories to the files. Now they cannot be easily find by others, let alone reused, which is the purpose of Commons. So please add categories to your uploads! And another request: please give more information about the photos (in the descriptions of the files): where were they taken, what is the name of the museum, how old are the artefacts or from which period, what was the use of the artefacts, and so on, as much as is known.
