Thanks for uploading File:SS Delphic 2.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Categorising images edit

Thankyou for uploading ship images to Wikimedia Commons. Please note how images are categorised in order to enable users to find them. The relevant policy is here: Commons:Categories. I have checked the images that you have uploaded thus far, and recategorised them where necessary. Thankyou. Motacilla (talk) 09:06, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thankyou for continuing to upload images to Wikimedia Commons. Before you upload any more, please note my message above, and study the Commons:Categories page. I have refined the categories for the images that you uploaded since I first messaged you. Please learn to do this for yourself.
Also, please be precise when citing the source from which you downloaded each image. A general statement such as "Ships Nostalgia" does not help fellow-editors to trace the source, for example to check the image's copyright status. Please include a url to the exact webpage whenever possible.
Thankyou. Motacilla (talk) 20:56, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello An ocean liner fan234.

You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.

Pls man I am sorry I lost my temper todays been a really stressful day for me and just for the images I posted to be all deleted was when I lost it I know what I did was wrong but if you could change it to be at least a year or something I would really appreciate that An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 11:23, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I can forgive the bad language thing, but all your uploads are deleted due to copyright violation. There's no use of unblocking, if your new uploads will be deleted for copyright violation as well. For unblocking use {{unblock}} template and explain, what kind of files you will upload, if unblocked, and how we can be sure, that they will not violate copyright. Taivo (talk) 12:07, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Many of this user's early uploads were of photos of 1800s ships, and were fine, copyright-wise. Some others were of pre-WWI British ships and were likely PD-UK-unknown. Would wish those would be undeleted. More recent ones were modern and likely copyright problems. If a photo is over 120 years old, it's almost certainly fine, but after that it gets more problematic -- we need to know the country of first publication (called the country of origin), and see if it is has expired there, and also the U.S. (for the latter you can use Commons:Hirtle chart). If we don't have enough information to figure out where it belongs on that chart, then we may not be able to upload it. British/European photos less than 70 years old are definitely still under copyright. Carl Lindberg (talk) 13:58, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
So one question if I find a website that the image is on do I copy the link to the website? I made 4 images and just want to know if they are violationsAn ocean liner fan234 (talk) 01:44, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
That is a good start yes. The copyright status depends on if the photographer was named on the original publication (and the place of publication can matter, since that determines the country of origin, which is a copyright law we need to respect). Copyright can last a ridiculously long time. If something is over 120 years old, you can use {{PD-old-assumed}}. In some rare circumstances, photos taken but unpublished for a long time could have a very long copyright. Things which were postcards prove publication at the time, which helps. A website today not having the author's name does not necessarily mean it was originally published anonymously. So, a link to a website helps, especially if that website gives a further source. It at least gives people a way to try and look things up. Having actual (old) publication info is the best way. Photos where we know almost nothing could be at risk of deletion; we need to put correct license tags on images and if we don't have enough information to do that, we may need to leave them. If you don't want to get into the nitty gritty of copyright, stick to stuff published more than 95 years ago. One note -- CC-Zero is a specific copyright license; it says copyright exists but was given up by the copyright owner. You can only use that if the source website explicitly states it, or you took the photograph yourself. If you falsely add that license, that could be grounds for deletion of the image, without actual publication info. Wikipedia is the "free encyclopedia"; the "free" part of that is actually quite loaded, which means everything uploaded needs to conform to https://www.freedomdefined.org , meaning a strict conformance to copyright. We can't upload photos and hope nobody complains -- we will proactively remove photos which have a significant doubt as to the copyright status (see COM:PRP). If you upload enough questionable photos, it becomes easier to simply delete them all if the uploader is making no attempt to respect copyright law. That law can suck, but there is no way around it. Thanks for your help An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 02:39, 3 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ever since all the images I posted have been deleted I been more careful on what images I post An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 02:40, 3 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm a little troubled with some of your uploads. For instance, File:SS Runic (1).jpg says it was created on 3 March 2024, which obviously isn't true. You are making the same mistakes again and it's a waste of time for us to check and correct your uploads. Either upload your images with proper information or do not upload anything at all. This is a final warning. Bedivere (talk) 00:10, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: "I don’t really know how to use the {{Unblock}} but I understand the issues and actions of copyright violation but I believe most of my photos pre ww1 are fine in terms of copyright and those are the ones I want to get back and if I do end up getting unblocked I will try and be better about copyright and not to harass other for simply followings the rules and reporting something because of copyright violations An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 14:26, 1 March 2024 (UTC)"Reply
Unblock reason: "Given the request I will accept the unblock request with the condition that you may not reupload files without adding credible source info. Consider this a final warning. It is also unacceptable to insult others, especially when people have only been trying to help you out. If you upload again images without sufficient source information, you will be blocked again. As a side note, you can request the undeletion of the images that you previously uploaded, but not without providing the source info, necessary to establish the public domain status of these works. 19:21, 1 March 2024 (UTC)"
