why the speedy tag? edit

Geo Swan, why did you tag File:Newmarket Coach Lines bus 32 at garage.jpg as speedy based on URAA requirements? I see your talk page has a number of URAA-related deletion requests, but all of them are normal deletion discussions. Given the nature of the URAA debate on Commons, I don't see how a speedy tag applies for such files. Mindmatrix 18:17, 3 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Sure.
Images Salmon took himself passed into the public domain, in Canada, on the 50th anniversary of his death -- ie 2008. Years ago I uploaded some of images he took shortly before his death, taking the "public domain" license on the TPL and COTA at face value. However, one of those images was challenged, by someone who stated that, under US law it was not the PD status of those images, today, that counted. It was their copyright status in 1996, that counted. When I learned this I stopped uploading images Salmon captured after 1948-12-31. A couple of years ago I acquired several really dogged wikistalkers, who continue to harass me, even after they were served with indefinite blocks on the English language wiki. One of these individuals challenged an image I uploaded that Salmon took prior to 1948-12-31, but after 1946, claiming it too couldn't be proven to be in the public domain, in the USA.
I don't know how much you know about Salmon... He died in his forties, of cancer. Most of the images from his collection, that he took personally, are from the last few years of his life. So I think he took them when he had to take early retirement to get cancer treatment, but was sometimes well enough to get out of the house. It shows admirable determination.
Anyhow, I decided to check his images, and speedy any I uploaded, prior to learning about this URAA wrinkle, that could be challenged under the URAA wrinkle. I saw you also uploaded some, as did SecondaryWaltz. In retrospect I should only have speedied the ones I uploaded myself, and initiated a discussion over the ones other people uploaded. I apologize for that.
I have considered making an appeal to the Toronto Public Library, the City of Toronto Archives, to request that they formally waive any foreign intellectual property rights they retain, for all the images in their collection that are already in the public domain, in Canada.
If they agreed we could restore those Salmon image then, as opposed to waiting fro 2033.

No worries. I noticed what you had done well after the fact. As a side note, Salmon authored or contributed to at least two books (Etobicoke in Pictures, Rails from the Junction), so it's likely some of his photos made it into these books. I've only managed to find a reprint of Etobicoke in Pictures in Google Books (1971), but no preview is available. I can't find the other book. The Toronto Public Library has both in reference (Rails from the Junction - many copies, Etobicoke in pictures - one copy). If you happen to be anywhere nearby, can you briefly pore over them (a trip to TO for me would take too long; no library remotely close to me has these books). I suspect if a photo appears therein, and they were published early enough, it allows those images to skirt URAA, keeping in mind that IANAL. Mindmatrix 00:24, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • When I got that first challenge, 6 or 8 years ago, I found his images were included in a book sold at Montgomery's Inn, a heritage site in Etobicoke. The author of that book had collaborated with Salmon, sixty years ago. The Etobicoke Guardian used to have column about the history of Etobicoke, written by the collaborator, and illustrated with a photo from Salmon's collection.
The pair collaborated, for years. Montgomery Inn gave me the other guy's email address. He was, at the time, semi-bedridden. (His wife said he only came downstairs on good days, when she explained why she was answering his email.) They only received $2 per column. Yipes!
I am guessing that Salmon's widow may have only received one cent per image for his collection. Less, maybe.
The book available at Montgomery's Inn might have been "Etobicoke in Pictures".
Is it possible there is a video version of "Rails from the Junction"?

Thanks for uploading File:Swansea's Herne Hill, in 1925.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi Geo Swan, Canada has freedom-of-panorama exception for 3D works. So, copyright of the statue shouldn't be a problem. --Túrelio (talk) 07:37, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
