Please use SVG
Thank you for uploading 2020 Presidential Election in Georgia's 6th Congressional District.png! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

Blank Space in Precinct Maps

edit

Hi. Thanks so much for your work in making precinct maps for various elections. In the future, would you be able to use the "resize page to selection" button in Inkscape (or equivalent) before you upload your maps so that there isn't as much white space? When there is so much white space, the maps don't fit as well into the infoboxes of the pages they go on, making them harder to read, especially when comparing them with county maps, which are usually sized properly. Thanks! OutlawRun (talk) 04:35, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I figured this out a while ago. If you look at my newer maps they do not have this problem. OrcaLord (talk) 12:37, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Would you be able to update your older maps to fix this issue, too? Some pages such as the 2018 Senate election in Michigan still it. Thanks. OutlawRun (talk) 17:37, 27 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
If I have time I will do it. OrcaLord (talk) 20:23, 27 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi, also my thanks for preparing these maps; could you please categorize them better? We have millions of files pertinent to politics of the whole world, but the subgroup of files dealing with "<year> election maps of <US state>" is much smaller. You might want to check out this example (that user made a new special category for the state-year combo) or this example (I am just using the generic year- and state-categories). All other categories you used, like "Politics of the entire history of the entire world" are too high in the hierarchy to be useful. --Enyavar (talk) 16:47, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah ok will do for future maps. OrcaLord (talk) 00:31, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
...they said, never changing anything about what they are doing. I see, thanks for ignoring my advice. --Enyavar (talk) 05:32, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Too difficult to find the categories. I try the same format for different states and it doesn't show. It's a minor error, stop complaining. You should be thankful that I even choose to make these maps. OrcaLord (talk) 19:01, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would be more thankful to not have to do cleanup every few weeks, as that's the only point where I see your creations. Too difficult to find? The most basic format is always [Election maps of <state>] and [<year> elections in the United States]. Your input actually seems to require more typing. All the best, --Enyavar (talk) 10:21, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Image File Names

edit

Hello, when you are uploading your precinct files please ensure you use names that are more descriptive than "[State] [election] [year]", the standard scheme is "[year] [State] [election] results map by [geography]", which is much clearer. Also don't include "fixed" or any other form of descriptor in the file name, as you have done with some of your current uploads. AveryTheComrade (talk) 22:28, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not important, not going to fix. My format works fine and the description explains it well. Also I never used fixed in a file name. OrcaLord (talk) 01:10, 13 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
In fact, several of your maps have used "Fixed" in a file name, and it absolutely is important to note what geography is used on the map. It is not remotely difficult to include the words "by precinct" in a file name. AveryTheComrade (talk) 20:07, 13 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I will think about doing that second part, but the first part is false. Link me to any map I made where I used fixed in the file name. OrcaLord (talk) 20:37, 13 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
These four.        AveryTheComrade (talk) 01:38, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Those were because the precinct lines were annoying. Those were some of my earliest maps I made and I no longer need to do that. OrcaLord (talk) 03:55, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Precincts Results Sources?

edit

Hi there! I wanted to say I really like your precinct maps of election results. I'll bet it takes a lot of hard work to do, and it's much appreciated! I wanted to ask where you tend to get the precinct results for your maps? On every map you uploaded to Wikipedia it doesn't mention where you got the results from, and I'm really curious. I also wanted to ask how you use individual colors for each margin of the results? For example, the bigger the winning margin for the Democrat, the bluer the precinct would be. Do you usually add darker colors for every count of 10 (i.e. margins between 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, etc)? Or some other margin range? SuperYowza500 (talk) 07:13, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Most of my data come from VEST (https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/electionscience) although there are exceptions. The wikipedia standard for what percent to color in is the highest vote getter in a certain precinct's percent in that precinct. OrcaLord (talk) 14:29, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Once you get a state's results from VEST, how do you convert it into a map? I went to that link and clicked on a state, then downloaded the .zip file, but I'm not sure what comes next. SuperYowza500 (talk) 02:47, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I made a video on how here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqDG68ffWtM OrcaLord (talk) 03:25, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Awesome, thanks! I'll check it out. SuperYowza500 (talk) 04:20, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Old NY maps

edit

Hi @OrcaLord could you change the style that uses the standard shapes we have? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Standardized_SVG_county_maps_of_US_states

It would really help as the shape files you are using exceeds 1mb and this can cause much slower loading times for some people and it always good to keep all the maps the same consistent shapes/style. If you could modify the standardized ny county map to have the 18th century boundaries that would be great https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/a/a3/20230306025635%21New_York_county_map%2C_cb_500k.svgPutitonamap98 (talk) 07:51, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Those shapefiles are modern day county maps. I literally cannot change them as they would be inaccurate otherwise. OrcaLord (talk) 18:55, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
And I make these in QGIS so I don't know how I would use those SVGs as a standard for it. OrcaLord (talk) 18:56, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Precinct Map Ideas

edit

Hello, OrcaLord.
I've noticed that you've made a lot of precinct maps for various elections both statewide and for specific congressional districts. If it's not too much trouble, could you try making a precinct map for the State Auditor's race in Missouri in 2018? If you could do that, it would be much appreciated.
Alongside this, here are some elections from 2012 that might be interesting to try mapping by precinct:
Missouri US Senate
Minnesota's 6th congressional district (Michele Bachmann)
Washington US Senate (I've been wanting to know how Cantwell won Yakima County)
Thank you,

For 2017 they separate the early vote numbers from the rest so if I did it without them the results would be inaccurate. That means only 2021 is doable so I am going to just do that one. OrcaLord (talk) 19:50, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

A shapefile is a type of file that you use to join data in a GIS software. From that you can map out the election and export as an svg, which is what wikipedia uses. A shapefile is simply a type of file, just like a png or gif except it is specifically for mapping out elections as it contains geometry, location information, and data about the geometries. @OrcaLord: Hello. I've noticed you made a map for the 2010 Michigan State House election. Thank you! I wanted to ask you where you got this map, and I also wanted to confirm it was the map based on the 2001 Apportionment Plan, so I could make edits of the map, and add it the series of articles on the Michigan state house districts in the historical boundaries section. Regarding Precinct Maps

edit

Hello,

I notice that you have found a lot of precinct map images for various states. In particular Florida going back to 1992, and Washington for a couple election cycles. Out of curiosity, do you have any Washington precinct maps from before 2004? Or Florida from before 1992? If so, I would be intrigued to see what they look like. Hey,

If you use VEST or anything else as a source, you need to include it in the copyright information. You can't just attribute yourself while not naming the data you used. All it takes is one guy (not me) to come in and make a giant request of 500 of your uploads be taken down because they don't have proper attribution. Thanks.
