Holy Isle

I have uploaded File:Holy Isle Boathouse 4828.jpg and used it in this blog post because that is where I surprised myself. (I hope you consider a link to the file description sufficient acknowledgement.) If you have been to Spa Road, Eskdalemuir and Holy Isle, you may well have encountered our son George - I am the other one in the picture. That photo was taken further up the hillside from where you took File:Women's Retreat Holy Isle.jpg. George is working there building pods for nuns. We were lucky enough to be visiting between women's retreats so we got to see the inside of the shrine room. Also this one - note the bog roll (centre) - an essential adjunct to meditation. I intend to upload those two pics but I think I should ask permission first. 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. Mixing of Havant and Emsworth

Thanks for working over many images I have uploaded via Monumental. At Special:Diff/696217953 you categorized an Emsworth building as Category:Havant which is incorrect, though Category:Borough of Havant would be correct. As it happens either way its likely to be me who distributes to sub-categories anyway however I find that mentally difficult as it reminds me of my indefinite blocking on the English Wikipedia. I'm also waiting for bots to stabilize on those images and any post-monumental load to have ceased. When that is done I might look to work through stuff. The bulk tool can be a bit iffy on some of this stuff and I haven't decided if/how I should request AWB permission and on what alt. accounts. I've no idea. I just wanted to put them all in a local category. I've no local knowledge. It's important that they end up in a local category as otherwise the wiki loves monuments stuff ends up separate from the rest of commons. I'm focusing on getting through them all. Sorry that read as a bit negative/defensive. The problem is that there seems to be no process or organisation, and thousands of photos that have not been processed from previous years. I'm working off my own bat, and have attempted to work out how it works. I've discovered that a pin is green not red, if (and only if) an image is added to its Wikidata item. I'm working through the list from petscan which is made of photos that are in the category Category:Potential image for Wikidata item.

For each photo I add a 'depicts' to the Wikidata item. As monumental knows the Wikidata item you'd hope that it would upload the photos already linked to the Wikidata item, but it doesn't. You need to find each one. I then add the best photo to the Wikidata item using the image statement. This turns the pin green - yay! I then go back to the photo, reload it as otherwise it will complain, and remove it from the potential images category. Yay! One down, now only 160 (from 2022) to go!

I'm doing this for several reasons. I did it like a scavenger hunt, a bit like you. I wanted to turn all the red pins green. However I found it really irritating. Monumental silently lost a load of my photos - I was uploading from my phone as I went round so that it was obvious which photo was which building. About 75% of these were lost. I also spent ages trying to find things that no longer existed. I don't know how the map is produced but it seems to be picking up former listed buildings. If it has been destroyed it's still on the list! Also if a building is well known the Wikidata item with the listing may not have been merged with the Wikidata item for the building, so actually we have loads of photos of the thing, just not connected to a Wikidata item called English Heritage's weird naming. Also if we have a commons category of images of the thing, but not one added as image to the Wikidata item, it still shows as red!

The thing that's really irritated me is that there's no way of organising this or feeding back. I left comments on the FAQ and all comments are moderated. They just didn't unmoderated them, never mind reply. Secretlondon (talk) 10:34, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

You are my hero for writing your WLM essay! It expresses so much of my frustration over the competition and the seeming neglect of the image dump and categories. I've recently found to my horror that there are so many newly listed buildings not on the map/with Wikidata items, and I have also trekked to some ghostly site of a lamppost across central London. I extensively use street view to help me in new places. I've never found anyone to talk to about this, alas. I've only ever uploaded from my mobile rather than monumental, I'm so sorry you lost so many images, I've really enjoyed looking at your 2023 contributions. Thanks. I kind of presume that there is (must be?) a process, but it's more about identifying winners than dealing with the scavenger hunt/data dump side. If Wikipedia UK shared what they are doing it would help. We could set up a wikiproject or something. I'm irritated that it is giving an error with every UK image loaded from monumental - I'm sure we had this last year too. They need to be gb-eng (or -sco, and not sure for the other countries). Country code -gb is erroring.

I bug reported the non-existent/deleted buildings but I don't think anything happened. If it wasn't so opaque it would be easier to fix things. Monumental is open source but it's software. All I can do is guess how it identifies a listed building. We are working with large data sets - things are imported and left. I think the data cleansing side is really important. Last year I found a demolished listed building and got it de-listed - the Council hadn't told Historic England they'd given permission to demolish it. I also found confused addresses in Torquay which Historic England fixed for me. We are boots on the ground - Historic England don't do site visits. They may expect the local Council to do so but I imagine it's a low priority.

The whole competition is organised via Wikidata items - I don't know how we'd get a new import of the list, especially as we don't want to overwrite any fixes on our end. Secretlondon (talk) 21:51, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

ISA Tool Workshop - Dec 12th

Greetings.

We released a few weeks ago a new version of the ISA tool on the Test Server. The new version propose semi-automatic tagging of images, which seeks to assist community in identifying and labelling depicts statements for Commons files.

Now we are looking for feedback with regards to

• the look, feel, and usability of the tool with the machine vision / metadata-to-concept enhancements in place.
• and most importantly, the quality of the recommandations provided.

This is why we are organizing an online workshop on Monday 12th of December, 16h-17h30 UTC+1 (on zoom). We will be very happy if you find the time to join us.

Number 99 on rail vehicles

These are all a bad idea. Loco classes might be assigned that number, but they don't have it on them in any relevant manner for this. Then for the L&YR locos, they don't even have that much (these numbers weren't ever applied to the locos and even today they're dubious). Andy Dingley (talk) 22:59, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

The children of Category:Numbers on rail vehicles are hardly the most useful categorization, but whatever value they have is based on some minor graphic design value: 'trains with numbers on'. They're visible. It's not about any semantics of the number (Take a look at what's there - it isn't.) Locos with numeric classes don't usually have that class number visible on them. NS 2900? They're numbered from 2901 upwards. None of them have 2900 on them. For the L&YR, this is especially ridiculous.

This is not a categorization about classes. It just isn't, it has been there for a long time, it's doing something different. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:19, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
