Thanks for uploading File:Battle of Mosul 2017.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. File copyright status edit

Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their provenance is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you. --Adeletron 3030 (talk) 14:45, 20 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Pictures that are already on Commons edit

Hi, I noticed that you've uploaded several images that are either duplicates or scaled-down versions of pictures that are already on Commons. You don't have to upload anything new — you can just use the existing images on Wikipedia. In fact, it's better not to upload duplicates, since Commons is so huge and it's already a challenge to find relevant images.

Thanks! Adeletron 3030 (talk) 19:47, 20 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Adeletron 3030 Do you recommend replacing the pictures in my collage? And you are correct, wikipedia pictures for some topics are quite limited... The ganymedian (talk) 05:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Your images are fine. I know being restricted to free-license images limits your options, but the pictures you found on Commons are perfectly fine. Just don't upload redundant versions of them.
Also, if and when you do upload images from outside of Wikipedia/Commons, be sure to cite the source (the URL whenever possible), add a license, and it'll be useful for other users if you add categories as well. And be sure to read COM:LICENSING to see what's allowed here. Thanks. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 13:52, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello! edit

Hello @4me689 - Pleasure to work with you on making these photo collages. The ganymedian (talk) 03:29, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

thank you very much for helping 4me689 (talk) 03:30, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@4me689 Did you create the photo collages for 2019, 2020, and 2021? They appear to be in <imagemap> format, and I was wondering- if you created them (if not then I will ask the person that did) this way, how did you export File:2021 collage V1.png into a singular image so that the images within would be made into rectangles? (I am examining the wikitext for these articles). Thanks The ganymedian (talk) 06:40, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I made them by using paint.net 4me689 (talk) 11:30, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Adeletron 3030 This was taken from Wikipedia commons, but since the image is in doubt, I will delete it. Thanks for the heads up. The ganymedian (talk) 03:38, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Please include a link in the “source” field. Telling us it’s from Wikipedia is completely useless because Commons hosts millions of images and it doesn’t give us a way to verify that the license is valid. Speaking of which, you didn’t include a license. Every upload requires a verifiable source and a valid license template. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 03:41, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I am assuming I should do this for all images in the photo collage? I apologize for sounding stupid, but I am new to this process. I appreciate all of your patience, and I hope you are not angry. The ganymedian (talk) 03:43, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Adeletron 3030 The ganymedian (talk) 03:44, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Oh, not angry at all! I'm happy to help and answer questions.
You don't have to mention the source in the collages, but there should be a source and a license for every image. When you use UploadWizard, make sure you're filling out every field. If the image came from an external website, enter the URL of the site where you found the image. If it's from another Wiki image, you can link to them using the [[:File:filename.jpg]] format.
For example, with the image File:Roger Federer Australian Open 2020.jpg, it's a crop of File:Australian Open 2020 (49836759073).jpg, which is originally from an external site. So here's what the information box looks like:
{{Information
| Description = Melbourne, Australia - 20 January 2020 - Roger Federer acknowledges the crowd after winning his round one match against Steve Johnson from the USA. (Photo by Rob Keating)
| Source = Cropped from File:Australian Open 2020 (49836759073).jpg, originally from Australian Open 2020
| Date = 2020-01-20 15:54
| Author = Rob Keating from Canberra, Australia, Australia
| Permission =
| other_versions=
}}
And because it was licensed under a Creative Commons attribution license, I enter:
{{Cc-by-2.0}}
under license.
That way, anyone can click on the file and see exactly where it came from and that the license is correct. Does that help? Adeletron 3030 (talk) 13:53, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Anyway, specifically for this image, it looks like it's a screenshot of this Red Bull video. Since Red Bull does not release copyright-free videos, we likely cannot keep these images on Commons. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 14:12, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

<imagemap> edit

@SalamAlayka Hello- when I am looking at the wikitext for the article "2020", the photo collage appears to be in <imagemap> format, and I was wondering- if you created it (if not then I will ask the person that did) this way, how did you export File:2020 collage v2.png into a singular image so that the images within would be made into rectangles? (I am examining the wikitext for these articles). Thanks The ganymedian (talk) 06:44, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@SalamAlayka I am attempting to eliminate the black space between pictures in "2018", "2017", "2015", "2013", "2012", and "2009" for reference. "2020"'s images are perfectly rectangular and fit, and I wish to emulate it. The ganymedian (talk) 06:45, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

I made two collage templates you can use to make another <imagemap> collage, you can make them like I said by using paint.net or gimp or photoshop or whatever photo editing software you use and by the way paint.net and gimp are free. just make sure you credit the original photos that are in the image collage. 4me689 (talk) 21:39, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@4me689 Thank you very much! This is a great help. How did you make the borders for these? I recently downloaded paint.net - is it under the shapes tool? The ganymedian (talk) 23:12, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I made the templates by reusing other collages and removing all the pictures from them. 4me689 (talk) 00:07, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

2018 Collage sizing edit

Hi @4me689 I hope you do not mind all of my questions, you have been a fantastic help, and I sincerely appreciate it. I just uploaded the new 2018 collage, but it appears to be very small in comparison to the one you published in 2020. I followed the code you outlined, and I was wondering if you were able to see what I did incorrectly in 2018? Thank you very much again for your help! The ganymedian (talk) 23:53, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

you accidentally misspelled the code when you were putting in in the regular Wikipedia page
you forgot to put | in front of the 430x430px|thumb.
hopefully this helps you and you're welcome for all the help. 4me689 (talk) 00:13, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
you forgot to credit the original photos in the 2018 collage, just reminding you that just make sure you credit the original photos that you use in the collages. 4me689 (talk) 00:24, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@4me689 Where in the references did you put credit for the collage images? The ganymedian (talk) 00:48, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
in the Source section in the summary section 4me689 (talk) 00:59, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@4me689 Is this when you pull up the actual 2020 collage v1.png? I only see a summary section when doing this, where each picture has a link. This also looks like what happens when I pull my 2018 Events Collage.png.
Or did you put the sources on the actual 2020 article somewhere?
Thank you kindly The ganymedian (talk) 02:02, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
you put the stuff in the summary section all stuff on Commons has that 4me689 (talk) 02:42, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

2020 Collage? edit

Hello The Ganymedian, I hope you're doing well. There is finally a consensus on which pictures to include for a Collage for the year 2020, and I wanted to ask if you could make it. Seeing as you have made the collages for some of the other years, I know it will look good, and I have no experience in creating one myself 😅 The top 8 images voted on were:

Also, I'm not sure how involved in the year collage community you may be, but if you happen to run across a consensus for years without a collage starting from 1980 (e.g. 2000, 2001, 1992, 1984, etc.) please let me know of those also, as I'd be glad to do those also. Thanks! The ganymedian (talk) 04:01, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, absolutely! I'll let you know if I find out. Johnson524 (talk) 05:57, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Johnson524 2020 collage has been uploaded to 2020. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks The ganymedian (talk) 18:30, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:2020 collage per consensus feb5.23.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hi, you need to put source/author information for each image in this collage into the description. --Túrelio (talk) 17:51, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Túrelio I have just finished placing picture sources for this 2020 collage per consensus. Thanks The ganymedian (talk) 18:29, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

copyvio-deleted images in your collages edit

Hi Ganymedian, in some of your collages 1 or 2 of the source-images have been deleted, after being identified as copyvio or without permission. Would you like to replace or remove the infringing images to avoid deletion of the collages itself?

--Túrelio (talk) 18:10, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Túrelio Yes I would prefer to repair these collages instead of having them deleted. Thank you The ganymedian (talk) 18:23, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok. I leave that to your responsibility and have not problem-tagged them. --Túrelio (talk) 18:25, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Túrelio I appreciate it, I may need some time to complete these corrections, as these collages can be time-consuming. Will work on them. The ganymedian (talk) 18:29, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Túrelio Is it possible to know which images are problematic on each collage? Is there a way to find out? Thanks The ganymedian (talk) 18:33, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Look at the source-entry of the collages: the red links are the bad ones. --Túrelio (talk) 18:36, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Túrelio Oh, I see. Thank you for pointing that out The ganymedian (talk) 18:46, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
