First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

speedy-tagging edit

Hi V85,
I've seen that you tagged quite some images showing copyrighted buildings etc. in France. However, you should also notify the corresponding uploaders on their talkpage. Otherwise the deleting admin (such as me) will have to do this or, if not done at all, the uploader might get angry about the resulting deletion. For notification, you only need to copy the line under "Please notify the uploader by adding the following to their talk page:" in the resulting speedy-message on the tagged image page and paste it onto the uploaders talkpage. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 12:22, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you for the advice. V85 (talk) 07:58, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

file:Wikisource-logo-no.svg edit

Mvh Finn Rindahl (talk) 21:23, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fin logo forresten :) Finn Rindahl (talk) 21:24, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Mhm.... V85 (talk) 07:58, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Anarkiets bibel (1906).djvu edit

Bonjour,

Cordialement, Yann (talk) 21:10, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sur Linux :

file="Fichier.djvu"
for i in `seq 1 100`
do
        j=$(($i-2))
        python movepages.py -noredirect -from:Page:"$file/$i" -to:Page:"$file/$j"
done

V85 (talk) 11:11, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you want to remove blank pages, save pages of the file in DjView. But I don't want to change files to make reupload easier. DjVu Solo doesn't seem to manage a file with internal OCR text. --Maltaper (talk) 10:13, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the tips. V85 (talk) 16:42, 23 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

PDF edit

V85 (talk) 13:31, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, V85!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Indeed. The texts inscribed on the Siameses World War I colors are the "Buddha Jaya Mangala Gatha" which praise for the victory of Gautama Buddha over the Mara. Written in Pali language, old Thai-Pali spelling which is used in early 20th century. Originally author is unkonwn but most of Thai people believe that was composed by a buddhist monk in Ayutthaya period, riegn of King Naresaun (about late 16th century). King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) made a little edit at the last verse, wishing for victory in every war of Thai Army.
