First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

As there's no evidence why it's in public domain i have deleted it. Note that the image on en: doesn't give the source. Platonides (talk) 16:43, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why? The picture was taken AT LEAST 84 years ago; plus, the author must well be dead.. Aviados (talk) 17:07, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I considered that. But suppose that the author lived another 20 years afet taking that photo, a conservative assumption. That means that we would need to wait another 6 years for the photo to be PD. Remember: it's the date of the author's death, not of taking the image. Platonides (talk) 21:16, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yea, that actually differs from state to state. In the US and Israel it is so; but not necessarily in France (I wonder..). Aviados (talk) 21:20, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Aviados!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Gotthold Weil2.jpg edit

I'd like to suggest that you improve your civility. People don't like being called "Wrong", particularly when, using the available facts at the time, they were correct. If I had simply made a mistake, you might have said something like:

"User:Jameslwoodward appears to have misread the WP:DE article"

The fact is, that in this case, I was exactly correct in reading the article as it stood and only your subsequent, unsourced, change to the WP:DE article made my statement wrong. Therefore, you might have said something like:

"It turns out that Gotthold Weil actually emigrated to Palestine in 1935 and I have changed the WP:DE article to reflect that."

     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:40, 21 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim. I am sorry if my response appeared too blatant for your taste. I'm sure it's at least in part a matter of cultural differences and (my) language skills. I shall try to consider your suggestion, but you should take into account the fact that English is not my mother tongue, and hence I have a smaller space for maneuvering (and from your end, you certainly notice more nuances than I do).
HOWEVER, the fact remains that you indeed misread the German article; I have no idea how or why - I can only guess that perhaps you had seen "Palestine" and "1948", and reached this false conclusion.
In any case, you were absolutely NOT "exactly correct in reading the article as it stood": the article stated "Deshalb emigrierte er nach Palästina und war bis 1948 Leiter der Nationalbibliothek an der Hebräischen Universität in Jerusalem", which roughly translates: "therefore he immigrated to Palestine and served as the head of The National Library until 1948". As you can see, it said NOTHING of the year of his emmigration. In other words, your statement had been wrong regardless of the subsequent change I made. All I did was to correct the year of his retirement (1946 and not 1948), and ADD the year of his immigration.
Last, I must say I think it is generally unwise to base one's statements on one's reading of a language which he or she - as you frankly admitted - "don't actually read"; and if one do choose to do that, one should be well prepared to be called "wrong" as he or she clearly misreads what is written. Aviados (talk) 14:42, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
As I said at the DR, my apologies -- I made a dumb mistake -- didn't even put the sentence into Google translate, which is rough but clear "Therefore it emigrated to Palestine and was until 1948 leaders of the national library at the Hebräischen university" -- I just put together the three words "emigrierte", "Palästina",and "1948".
I'll cut you a little slack for the "Wrong", although I suspect you'll admit that it would have been a little rough in your mother tongue. I won't cut you much slack for writing in a language that isn't your mother tongue, because reading the paragraphs above, I have no clue that you aren't a native English speaker.
BTW, I don't have any idea why you have File:Black Kite 2364818940.jpg on your user page, but thank you for showing off a wonderful photograph.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 16:05, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Dumb indeed ;) Never mind, s*** happens. BTW, Google Books is a wonderful tool, which I highly recommend. Honest; as a Wikipedian, it serves me a lot.
Hmm.. I realize now that you must have misundertood my intention: the label "wrong" was made regarding your statement, not yourself (had I meant you, I would have said something like "you are wrong"). Oh, and in Hebrew (which IS, BTW, much less civil and polite and much more blunt, bold and straightforward than English) it's 2 different words.
Thanks :) But please, I'm pretty sure it's easy to detect that I'm no native speaker.
It is something, isn't it? Commons is really rich with absolutely wonderful pieces like that. A real treasure of the Human race, no less. Aviados (talk) 16:35, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Zangwill? edit

In 2008, you uploaded File:Israel Zangwill.jpg, claiming that it was free because it's from before 1923. But you didn't include any details about where it came from or how you know that it's older than 1923. Could you explain, please? Thanks. DS (talk) 19:55, 22 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hey DS, sorry for the time it took me to respond. Thank you for bringing this to me, as it actually was a wrong template to be used there. I've replaced it. Have a nice weekend, Aviados (talk) 14:11, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
