David Dewhurst image

edit

Brian, I'm one of those somewhat-inept wikipedia editors who enjoys editing and updating pages (I'm interested mostly in politics) who is not particularly skilled with the internets. Could you help me out with the David Dewhurst image? It's not a copyright violation, but I think that I've probably put the image in incorrectly. Could you point me to a resource or how-to guide explaining the right way to do it? I'd like to learn how (mostly for future reference).

Thanks.Jonschr (talk) 05:31, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. Are you sure the image isn't a copyright violation? Images cannot usually be uploaded with simple permission specifically for the Wikimedia Commons. How have you obtained permission for this image? If you have email or written proof, please read Requesting copyright permision and Commons:OTRS, and follow the steps to provide evidence to the OTRS volunteers here at the Wikimedia Commons. The key here is that the copyright owner of the image must specifically agree to release the image under a free license. This includes use of the image for commercial purposes. I'll be happy to help you in any way possible if needed. Thanks. Brianreading (talk) 09:32, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Shasta III.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. Issue with University of Houston images

edit

I've been looking through Category:University of Houston and discovered a number of really great historical photos from the University of Houston Libraries that are apparently PD. Here's the problem: the library websites declare that the images are PD, but there's no Commons confirmation of that permission statement. Here's the solution: paste this in the image files.

{{attribution|University of Houston Libraries}}{{LicenseReview}}

Here's an example:Shasta III.jpg

Otherwise, they are liable to get tagged with NPD, like I did a few of them. Or, once the source URLs are broken, NPD again.--GrapedApe (talk) 04:49, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't aware that every single image posted under PD needed to be reviewed by Wikimedia Commons. The source confirms that this image is in the public domain. One can ascertain as you have that the image is in the public domain without the need for the resources of administrators. If I'm incorrect in my thinking, can you point me to policy? Thanks for your diligence! Brianreading (talk) 16:30, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Paul Chu (Ching-Wu Chu).jpg

edit

File:Paul Chu (Ching-Wu Chu).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: The file's source page stated that "Copyright to this resource is held by the creator or current rights holder... It may not be reproduced or distributed in any format without permission of the copyright owner." Given that Paul Chu only gets involved with the University of Houston after 1979 as a professor (refer to w:Paul Ching Wu Chu also), and I found no relevant registration on the U.S. copyright registration, it is quite likely that the file is still copyrighted and unfree.
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

When this image was originally uploaded, there was a different copyright notice, perhaps invalid as of then. If you believe this is not in the public domain, please feel free to delete. Brianreading (talk) 09:45, 8 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your information, and unfortunately I found no archived pages on the Wayback Machine proving it's copyright status. I'll change the file to a regular deletion request to give further time for OTRS and permission procedures.廣九直通車 (talk) 08:53, 10 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Paul Chu (Ching-Wu Chu).jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Venues of the Major League Rugby has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
