Dear GRuban,

If you can help me just this once, please review these 2 images below uploaded by me.

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:33, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

It's an honor! You review more images in a day than I do in a year!--GRuban (talk) 02:00, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

3 images

Dear GRuban,

If you can help, please review these 3 images of a species that does not exist on Commons. Some are quality images.

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:07, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Done Those are beautiful! --GRuban (talk) 01:12, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Thank you GRuban for your kind help. I know I am trusted and no one questions my image reviews but I feel much safer with an occasional second or third image reviewer of my uploads...just in case. There was a case 1-2 years ago where I reviewed many images from a youtube channel and then someone filed a DR and I was asked if the images from the YT channel were really free. By this time, the license at the YT channel had changed to ARR from CC BY 3.0. Luckily, I found a second separate reviewer who had reviewed one of this images and confirmed it was CC BY 3.0 when he reviewed them...like I did. A second or third reviewer is a bit safer. Yes, the images are absolutely amazing indeed! Good day from Vancouver, Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:18, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
Oh no, I understand completely. As I wrote above, it's an honor! --GRuban (talk) 01:21, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

This web video has an archived internet link with a CC BY 3.0 license here: https://web.archive.org/web/20181112175327/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7YkcTSQdos

But I don't know if its safe for you or Alexis Jazz to pass it based on the Internet archive link since the video is not accessible. The description is unchanged. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 09:59, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

  • If a web video can be passed by this way, then maybe this large list can be reduced a little. However, Internet archive does not work for some of the video as I tried 1 or 2 of them. I will be away for most of the day tomorrow. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:02, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
@Leoboudv: User:Alexis Jazz/DWDD archief contains links to DWDD YouTube videos from 2017 to now, with green archive.org links where available. Sadly, most were not archived. I'm looking for more ways to find archived licenses. Those that were archived can be passed, the video itself doesn't have to be archived. It's beyond COM:PRP to assume a video could have changed. I don't think videos on YouTube even can be updated, but I'll look that one up. I can't pass anything myself as I'm not a license reviewer. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 11:25, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
You can delete any video you uploaded to your YouTube channel. You can’t replace a video since any new video uploads will get a new URL, but you can make changes to the existing video. Make changes links to make changes: only metadata can be replaced, not the video itself. Some effects can be added, but I think those could only remove content (like blurring faces), not add it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 11:33, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
I passed it based on the archive link, I don't think it's reasonable to think that the video was different at the time. --GRuban (talk) 14:46, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Go to Bing, select the little downward arrow next to the URL, click "cached". The Creative Commons license can be seen in the HTML, perhaps also directly on the page. Bing cache is volatile though, so I hope it doesn't disappear before you see it.. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:37, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Pinging @Leoboudv, Yann, Leyo because Bing cache is volatile. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:53, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Your Bing cache links don't actually work for me - I get results, but no caches. Searching for the video titles works, though. cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?d=4899799351951713&w=PrNvRfYwppe0K4OvOafpILQ6vcyo7DRJ cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?d=4980128095151515&w=3XNgOUnvu0DYs2E6_PNKZ3e5A0P9Itky I can't make those links because of some filter against cc.bingj.com, apparently. --GRuban (talk) 18:25, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
I can see the CC license on Bing cache, but I would not validate this without more opinions. Could you ask on COM:VPC please? Regards, Yann (talk) 18:29, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:43, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:09, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
...whimper, whimper...   Do keep listing these, and I will get to them eventually, but … not all at once. --GRuban (talk) 20:21, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

I know many haven't been uploaded here (yet), but even for those it'll be good to confirm now the CC license is actually there while we can.

Suggestion (may vary a bit depending on browser): load the cached page, ctrl+u (view source), ctrl+f (search), type "Commons". Found anything? Creative Commons. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:26, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

  •   Comment: Hopefully some video clips were saved Alexis Jazz and GRuban. Unfortunately, I am very busy with work (in the real world) this Friday and Saturday. I'm glad that my suggestion saved some files. Unfortunately. I have to work again in my real job. PS: The video file you asked on my talkpage was passed Alexis Jazz . Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:16, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

Sadly, most of the Internet archive links don't work. Also GRuban is right. The bing links don't work on my computer. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:22, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

Working on it. I'll make a more usable list. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:45, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
Leoboudv, GRuban: User:Alexis Jazz/DWDD archief#Unreviewed videos. Please try to deal with entries that need Bing cache first. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:13, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
OK, looks like all the Commons files listed in this talk page section have been reviewed, correct? Looking at the User:Alexis Jazz/DWDD archief#Unreviewed videos now. --GRuban (talk) 18:57, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
I found this wonderful tool that accesses Google cache: http://cachedview.com/ - useful to try when Bing cache is out. --GRuban (talk) 19:01, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

So I looked at a number of files on Alexis's list, and they all seemed to be done. Is the whole list done? --GRuban (talk) 23:34, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

@Patrick Rogel: - er - I'm sorry, but I don't remember adding an image of Rachael Denhollander. (I mean, I could be wrong, I upload a lot of images, I might have forgotten one, but they're usually linked from one of the pages in User:GRuban/Uploads, and I can't see one having been added there.) Thanks for uploading File:Christine Bottomley receiving Best Actress at the BBC Audio Drama Awards 2017 (cropped).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Christine Bottomley receiving Best Actress at the BBC Audio Drama Awards 2017 (cropped).jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Re: File:Ashley Williams at Every Day premiere.jpg crop reversion?

Hi, and excuse my delay... 1st) imho, it's preferible a picture that follows the basic rules in the portrait's composition - with subject at the center of the imaginary lines that cut the format (example); and 2nd) for transparency's reasons, it's recommended to upload separally eventially cut-outs — danyele 17:48, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

  • @Danyele: Thanks for responding. I think (1) my crop keeps the subject at the center, and (2) I think it's not useful to keep an uncropped version that would never be used. As for history: I cropped 4 minutes after uploading the first, so I could as well have cropped first, and never uploaded the first version, no? But if you consider the uncropped superior, I will not object further. --GRuban (talk) 18:13, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

--sasha (krassotkin) 21:59, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

--GRuban (talk) 14:16, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
--sasha (krassotkin) 18:26, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
--GRuban (talk) 19:30, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
--sasha (krassotkin) 08:24, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
--GRuban (talk) 16:47, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
@Yann: Bonjour! After a quick look at your Babel box, I'm guessing you can't read the above without Google Translate, but I gather you're the person that nominated these files for License review, so I should probably ping you. Here's the story: The site mos.ru (official site for city of Moscow, capital and largest city of Russia) releases its files under cc-by 4.0, (we've even got a Template:Mos.ru for that) so I reviewed a few files from transport.mos.ru (official site for Moscow public transport) under that license. User:Krassotkin brings up the reasonable argument that the mos.ru license doesn't actually extend to transport.mos.ru, that these are different sites and just share a common root. There is a discussion on the RU wikipedia about this that is ongoing and is currently about evenly divided each way. So I'm going to stop reviewing any more of these until that discussion concludes, then review in accordance with that conclusion, and also update Template:Mos.ru/doc. You're also an administrator, while I am merely a humble license reviewer, so if you disagree, feel free to tell me, and I'll probably do what you say, or at worst ask the Village Pump or something. --GRuban (talk) 17:14, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
Hi, Thanks for pinging me. I let Russian decide if the license is valid or not. And it is precisely because non Russian speakers can't know about this that a license review is needed. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:33, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

@Yann and Krassotkin: The RU discussion has stopped, I've modified Template:Mos.ru/doc and started Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with transport.mos.ru. Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with transport.mos.ru. --GRuban (talk) 16:05, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Flickr2Commons

Hello! Thanks for your many uploads. You've uploaded at least one photograph from Flickr. You might be interested in Flickr2Commons, a tool that automatically and faithfully transfers file metadata, source, author, etc, and performs a bot-assisted license review. Check it out! Cheers. --Animalparty (talk) 19:02, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, I used the Upload Wizard, which I believe also does that, and may even invoke it. --GRuban (talk) 19:20, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Ohmdenosaurus license is now aviable (Like Emausaurus, but is nominated for Speedy deleting)

Like the Emausaurus Restoration, this other needs confirmation for its creative commons 3.0. an older version was uploaded without it, now is solved. Link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohmdenosaurus_Reconstruction.jpg

User:Yewtharaptor 17:54, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

@Yewtharaptor: I'm sorry, but I don't know what you are referring to. Did you mean this message to go to someone else? --GRuban (talk) 17:11, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Maybe i stated it wrong...did you review this image(?): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emausaurus#/media/File:Emausaurus_Hagen_Theropod.jpg If so, there is another on the same situation of validating license: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohmdenosaurus_Reconstruction.jpg

If you weren´t, wikipedia has made a mistake leading to your page.

User talk: Yewtharaptor 18:16, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Ah, I understand now. I'm afraid I review lots of images, so I don't remember all of them without a relevant link. I'm a Commons:License reviewer, but not one of the Commons:Administrators, so I can't undelete the file. You'll need to ask one of them, probably User:JGHowes to do that ... and I see you already have, at User_talk:JGHowes#Ohmdenosaurus_license_was_aviable...and_was_deleted_without_any_review. The best I can do is to weigh in at that discussion, so I shall. --GRuban (talk) 19:30, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi about the cropped pic

GRuban, You nominated a pic that I'd cropped to a powerpoint pic. OK. I can see that the letter of the rule might prevent this. Sad. You also note here that it could be cropped in a different way. BUT that file is deleted, too?? Surely it is possible to take a pic of someone giving a presentation??? If not then we have 1000s of images to delete too. Care to comment? Thanks Victuallers (talk) 20:27, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

You can take a picture of a person giving a presentation, and have the copyright to the picture of the person. You don't own the copyright to the picture of the presentation on the screen, that is owned by the creator of the presentation. (Otherwise you might as well take a video camera into a movie theater airing Rise of Skywalker, point it at the screen, and claim the copyright to that.) --GRuban (talk) 20:48, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
Here are some examples from images I uploaded within the last few months. --GRuban (talk) 21:02, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
