First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

  Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

  Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
  Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Mattythewhite!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Andre Boucaud 1.png, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hello Mattythewhite,

could you please move this gallery to a subpage of your userpage? Because of it, it takes quite long to load your userpage, which should be avoided. Thank you. Regards --Rosenzweig δ 23:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Gordon Staniforth 09-04-11 1.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Autopatrol given

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you.Érico Wouters msg 12:51, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

File:Simon Whaley 1.png

This image on flickr was originally taken in jpg format. All flickr images that were originally in jpg format should be uploaded in .jpg format on WikiCommons rather than .png format because we would get the camera metadata. Also images in jpg format upload faster. Please see this DR and also this DR...where the link to the replacement image in .jpg shows that the flickr account owner puts some information in the camera metadata such as his full name and the image license. This is for your information. Please try to upload your future images in .jpg format rather than .png format if you can. Its your decision. No, I won't take any action against you. I just tried to show why .jpg format is better than .png, that's all. This is another image in .jpg format where the camera metadata not only names the camera model used but also the name of the flickr account owner.

 •   Comment: Of course, if the original image at the flickr account was taken in png format, then you would have to upload the image on Commons in png format. Most flickr accounts use .jpg today. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:45, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Congratulations, Dear license reviewer

If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi Mattythewhite, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add User license reviewer to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons!    FDMS  4    14:17, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mattythewhite, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Bury has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Tagging copyvios

Hi, When tagging copyright violations, please inform the uploader. This is best done using the gagdet. See in your preferences to enable them, tab "Gadget", section "Maintenance tools" : "AjaxQuickDelete" and "Quick delete". These add links in the left column (or right column for Hebrew, Arabic, etc., language interface). Regards, Yann (talk) 06:14, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:38, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

CropTool

In the future, I would appreciate it if you used CropTool to crop images. This tool allows users to crop images already on Commons without having to download the images. It also makes sure that, if necessary, the file has already passed license review. It also properly links the images to one another, in case an issue with them comes up later. Elisfkc (talk) 15:39, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

How does that help when the vast majority of images I upload aren't already on Commons to begin with? Mattythewhite (talk) 15:44, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Because you can upload the full image first, then crop it. That way, the review process is automated and others can crop the image how they want. --Elisfkc (talk) 15:49, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
I presume it works on Chrome OS? If so, it would make life easier for me by not having to use my Windows PC to crop images. I'll look into it. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:51, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Yep. That's actually what I am using right now. --Elisfkc (talk) 15:54, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
@Elisfkc: Say I wanted to upload some images from here, which are generously copyright friendly, would you recommend I upload the original version, use the CropTool and save the cropped image as a new file? Should the title of the original use the name as downloaded, or something else such as "England training [date]? Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 20:02, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

Why are you nominating image for deletion i already showed the permission of the image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nzol12 (talk • contribs) 16:18, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

I have explained why at the deletion request. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:19, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
Really could you eliminate the nomination page please, there as to have another way of solving this, until now no one had any sorth of problem with the image, for the second time please eliminate the nomination page please to disccus an alternative. Nzol12 (talk) 18:24, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
No. If the image does belong to you, as you claim, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:44, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
i know dont have nothing to worry about, but the thing is anytime there is a nomination page, normally the content is eliminated without proper revision that is why im asking you to delete the nomination page that all, please im asking just this favour. Nzol12 (talk) 18:51, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
I can't just "delete" the nomination now it's been started, and even if I could I wouldn't be inclined to close it. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:00, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

File:PA7UEFA.jpg

Already put the right license on the File:PA7UEFA.jpg can you check the image to put on João Félix article thanks.Nzol12 (talk)

No, you haven't. It is abundantly clear that you have no authority over the licencing of these files. Please cease. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:53, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Hello Matt,

The file for Jon Champion has been nominated for deletion. You say that it’s because it looks like a screen grab. Well , I can assure you that it is not. It is a photo taken with an iPhone by me. It should not be deleted.

Thanks!

Re: YouTube files

Hi Matty. I'm using VLC to create a screen cap from the Youtube video. It defaults to PNG file, now that you mentioned it, I saw that I can change that. I will use JPG from now on. By the way, don't know if you are license reviewer, but maybe you can help with the Youtube license review backlog? That would help massively. Thanks — Dudek1337 (talk) 09:30, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

These photos are still visible on Commons and have been used once again today. I'd thought they would have been deleted by now by, at most, two admins ages ago. Iggy the Swan (talk) 13:46, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Re: Youtube

Unfortunately there is no automated tool as we have for Flickr for example (or at least not to my knowledge). So I do everything manually. Here's my process:

1. Download the video with the greatest quality available. I do that using JDownloader but you can use anything you want, I just find it easiest to use.

2. Open the file using video player, my preference is VLC. In VLC I just take a snapshot from the menu: Video -> Take Snapshot.

3. Then just follow standard stuff for uploading the file to Commons. Remember to add Youtube and licensereview tags.

What sucks is that there is huge backlog of reviews, so it might happen that the video is deleted before the review. Review process is also not automated I think, and it most cases it would need manual oversight as the images are cropped anyway.

Hope that helps you, let me know if you have any more questions. — Dudek1337 (talk) 10:56, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

@Dudek1337: Thanks. Do you crop the screenshot before uploading the file, if so what with? Mattythewhite (talk) 16:51, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, I do crop the images, and I use the basic Windows tool - the Photos application. It's quickest as I didn't need to install anything 3rd party, but it can be clunky sometimes... — Dudek1337 (talk) 21:04, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
