First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

@Notepadplusplusplus: No, this is not the case. Unless you can prove that the political parties indeed released their electoral posters under some free licenses (like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}), the copyright owner (i.e. the political parties) held the copyright with all rights reserved (i.e. you should not upload them to Commons).

Neither all parliament-related media are published under {{OPL}}: those that are indeed published under OPL should explicitly state it, either on the work itself (such as at the poster's end), or if it is published on the Internet, it might be mentioned in some copyright policy page.

Based on such reasons, I will restore the deletion tags. Please do not remove deletion tags by yourself. If you think someone wrongfully nominates your files for deletion, start a deletion request.廣九直通車 (talk) 10:18, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Update: After scrutinizing the licensing information for OPL, I can now confirm that {{OPL}} should apply for File:LibDems Formal Request for Recognition of Hong Kong Qualifications.jpg (cf. The Open Parliament Licence applies to material made available in hard copy or electronically.), so I'm prepared to withdraw deletion request for that file. The other 3 are not, because they are created on behalf of political parties.

政黨作爲法人團體，當然有權持有並行使版權權利。由於作品是以政黨名義製作，英國國會的OPL許可並不適用於有關作品。相對地由於您上傳的自民黨公函由國會議員撰寫，因此OPL許可自動適用。我也因此提出撤回有關檔案的提刪。
維基共享禁止合理使用：這點和中文維基百科不同。
最後提醒作品是否已經進入公有領域不是根據個人喜好而確定的，而是根據版權法例的要件，一般在作者死亡後或者作品出版后若干年才會進入公有領域（當然，也有許多特例）。維基共享用戶常用的共享創意特許條款（CC license）授權他人在遵從某些條件（如注明作者、使用相同授權，或者本站不允許的非商業、不允許衍生作品等）下使用此等作品，但是有關作品離進入公有領域還有相當時間：以英國爲例至少要等你死後才開始計算70年。
