Categories in België edit

--Foroa (talk) 17:01, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category:Former vicinal railway lines in Belgium edit

I will agree with you, if you will proceed on the same way for the above category.

Jean-Pol GRANDMONT (talk) 09:09, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The cat. "Former vicinal railway lines in Belgium" has pictures from many places and is a subcategory off the much bigger "NMVB/SNCV" category. Once there are enough pictures I can make a subcategory where I can link directly to the location, but until then I maintain the direct link to the location in the pictures. On having enough pics I can create "Former vicinal railway lines in the province of Hainaut" and link it to the province of Hainaut.
The "Parc de Mariemont" category is different in that all the pictures are taken in Morlanwelz-Mariemont.

Greetings,

Your vicinal railway maps edit

Hi, Smiley.toerist. As you've probably noticed, I looked through you contributions and nominated a few files for deletion because they seem to be photographs of non-free works. However, my real concern was your vicinal railway maps, such as File:Buurtspoorwegen Namen.png and File:Buurtspoorwegen Luik.png. It seems clear from looking at the images and their history that you're making these maps by first scanning in a paper map and then cleaning it up digitally. However, I don't see any mention of how you obtained the original paper maps that you scanned. If those images are based on scans of non-free copyrighted maps, then I suspect that they may constitute non-free derivative works. If you could clarify the source of those maps, and thereby allay may concern, I'd be very thankful. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 17:12, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

(Rely below copied from User talk:Ilmari Karonen.)

I used and combined several sources to draw the maps:

  • The starting point is a partial foto of a 1978 GTF national railmap (black and white). This map is no longer available or sold. The vicinal railway lines on the GTF map are very small dotted lines. However there were many errors, imprecisions and corrections for wich I used a lot of (sometimes conflicting) sources. These where:
  • Michelin road maps
  • Vicinal railmaps of "Rail Atlas vicinal"
  • The vicinal story (light Railways in Belgium)
  • Detailed walking maps
  • Google Earth
  • railway timetable of 1933
  • Tram/railway map of Brussel
  • Personal hikes along the tracks (File:Tunnel spoorlijn 25A onder 25 en 27.JPG, File:Essene-Lombeek oude spoorbrug.JPG
  • Discussions with other wikipedians over the precise route of a line.

When I am ready with a map, there is not single byte left of the original picture. All railway lines/vicinal lines have been redrawn with the hand, using the other sources. (thicker and smaller lines, lines and stations deleted and added, etc) I have added a lot of locations and other details. All text is my own.

There is a discussion as what is an original map. Al maps have to start from somewhere and it is inevitable that as a representation of a reality, al maps wil look similar. These are the same railway lines and information. (content) What ultimately makes the difference is the styling en way of presentation, not the content. (Look for example at roadmaps of the same area) Besides there is a lot of original content. Each map cost me a lot off effort and time. The styling and colours are original and my own. A strongly object to refering the maps as derivative works.

Smiley.toerist (talk) 20:43, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

If you want I can send the "starting" map if you want to judge for yourself.

Thanks for your speedy reply. If indeed, as you write, the styling and colors of the finished maps are entirely original to you, then I see no problem: I fully agree that the mere geographical placement of towns, borders and routes on a map is abstract factual information which generally cannot be copyrighted. I was only concerned because it seemed, from looking at the images, that you might've been merely recreating the source maps complete with their styling, color and other creative presentation choices. If that's not the case, then I have no further concerns. In any case, I'd like to thank you for contributing so much time and effort to Commons, and I'm sorry for any that I may have needlessly wasted with this query. :-) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 20:55, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

It would be usefull is there are some guidelines in the commons. The derivative explaination section doesnt mention maps and what is posible. It remains a judgement call. If you take a picture of a paris metromap and draw a few lines it is not sufficient.

I find the lack of FOP in Belgium and France for public billboards a bit ridiculous. If a company or project puts up public information on the boards, I cant see any posible reason why they want to copyrigth/protect the information. There would be no legal risk. I can extract a drawing out of File:Lyon Leslys construction 9.jpg but it cost a lot of time for little purpose.Smiley.toerist (talk) 21:34, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Tram companies in Liege province.jpg is a combination of two different pictures taken in the trammuseum of Liege. It is very usefull information for several articles. I could try to get permission of the museum. Creating a new diagram is a lot off work. Alternatively I could rework the whole thing and keep the information. Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Category:Multiple units of Belgium edit

Hello, you put a note on that category page, saying "Subcategory:Classical EMU is also a problem." Could you please explain what sort of problem you see? -- Gürbetaler (talk) 23:26, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

All the pictures in the category are off Belgian multiple units of the SNCB railway. EMU stands for Electric Multiple Unit. "Classical EMU" is a very broad term and can apply to a lot of old EMU's in any country. Not as a subcategory of Category:Electric multiple units of Belgium. Furthermore the other Belgian EMU categorys all start with "SNCB ..." see: Category_talk:Requested_moves#Category:Classical EMU Smiley.toerist (talk) 09:08, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Suggestie naar aanleiding van Category:Duisburg Sint-Joris-Weert SNCV edit

Dag Smiley.toerist.

Smiley.toerist (talk) 12:46, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wouter (talk) 17:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Category:Crossborder buses Belgium Netherland edit

Isn't there a better name for this category? I'm guessing you're talking about buses that are in some Belgium-Netherlands cross-border region (I live in the US so I have no idea; at first I thought "Crossborder" may be a brand of buses) or buses that simply cross the Belgium-Netherlands border? Maybe we can call it "Belgium-Netherlands cross-border buses" or "Cross-border buses in Belgium and the Netherlands". BTW, this doesn't work. You can only sort a category one way per category. Rocket000 (talk) 06:37, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

In Europe there are to kinds of international buses in public transport. There are the long distance buses like Eurolines like Paris Amsterdam wich are run for profit. At a local level there are some bus connections crossing the borders. Local and regional buslines are heavily subsidized and local authorities dont like to spend money outside their area. So local international lines are very haphazard and little known. (also in the travelwebsites). Going back to the issue at hand:

How would you classify all the public transport buses lines crossing the US Canadian border? Do local buses al stop at the border and you have to cross on foot to catch a bus on the other side? Often it is complicated because a busline has to have permission on both sides of the border. Who drives the busses? Are local tarif used on both sides of the borders for local passengers? This is why I consider buslines crossing the border as something special. In Europe there are lots of borders without any barriers. By most borders you dont really notice them.

I would like to have head category regrouping all crossborder buslines; Belgian/Netherlands, France Belgium, France Germany etc. There maybe a better name, but all such categorys should have the same naming convention.Smiley.toerist (talk) 07:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

PS: Is there any article summarising all the ways you can cross the US/Canadian border with public transport? Smiley.toerist (talk) 07:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not saying they shouldn't have a category, I just thought the name could be improved. I couldn't find any article about US-Canada border-crossing public transport, but I do know there are buses, trains, and ferries that do cross the border on a regular basis (some info: [1]). So which one of the names I suggested is best? Or can you think of something better? The current title, at the very least, needs a preposition in it, e.g. "Crossborder buses in Belgium Netherland", and Netherland should be Netherlands. Rocket000 (talk) 20:35, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
"Crossborder buses between Belgium and the Netherlands" and as head category "Crossborder buses in Europe". The last is maybe not really necessary. (buses in Europe/buses by country) Smiley.toerist (talk) 16:53, 1 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I moved it to Category:Cross-border buses between Belgium and the Netherlands. I'll leave it up to you to create a parent category if you think it's needed. Rocket000 (talk) 12:44, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tramway of Valenciennes edit

There will be a new extension to Crespin/Quiévrechain. The terminus of the line will be at the Crespin station Link. Since I have seen on Google Earth that you have put on line some pictures of the facilities there, could it be possible for you to put on Commons some pictures of that area ? Thanks a lot. 195.169.141.54 13:41, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is unclear in the article wat is meant bij station Crespin. There has never been a rail/tram station in Crespin and on the international railway line the station was called Blanc-Misseron but this was some distance away from Crespin. Crespin and Quiévrechain are on the opposite side of the railway and cannot be served by the same line. The busline 15 serving the area form Valenciennes goes to the border and then turns back and then serves either the Crespin or Quiévrechain village. I suspect that the tram wil continue from the railwayline North to Crespin (or South to Quiévrechain, but not both). A connecting busline can be started from the Belgian station connecting with the tram and continuing to the village not served by the tram. But this is pure speculation from my part. I find it strange that there not already a bus connection between the Belgian station and France. They dont need a tram to start a crossborder service. There used to be a direct busservice between Mons and Valenciennes. I have doubts about the international traffic to be generated. Smiley.toerist (talk) 08:44, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Categorie "Old maps of Charleroi" vervangen door "Maps of Charleroi".

Mulhouse tram and tram-train edit

Hello   I'm really sorry, I don't know if you prefer french or english to talk, then I'll try english even if i'm a French guy lol. First of all, thank you and congratulations for your pictures of Mulhouse tram and tram-train, it's a very good work. I'm in the way to organize categories there, then if you want to change some of them on your own pictures, it's up to you, I try to have more precise categories now that there is a sufficient number of pictures. I just wanted to ask you about the File:Mulhouse - tramway map.png you recently updated. It's nice but there is a little part of line 1 missing on North, the 3 stops opened in 2009 after Rattachement (Tuilerie, St Nazaire, and Châtaignier). Would it be possible to add them on the schema? It would be very kind! Thanks again, Cheers!   Jeriby (talk) 02:02, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I dont have the precise information on line 1, (where are the points, crossovers and platforms (centre or side)). Futhermore there is not enough drawing space in that direction, but that can be solved by a break with inset.
French is no problem for me, except I dont write it without errors. (fautes d'orthograph) Smiley.toerist (talk) 09:29, 8 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK thank you very much   then I'll go on in french   malheureusement je n'ai pas d'outil adapté pour faire ce genre de dessin, mais pour avoir la description exacte de la ligne et de ses croisements, je pense qu'il y a moyen de s'inspirer de ceci: [2] jusqu'au trait noir qui marque l'arrêt de la ligne en l'état, au nord de Châtaignier (la suite étant le plan de l'hypothétique extension en direction de Wittenheim). Voilà, si cela peut aider :-) Jeriby (talk) 16:59, 8 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rolling Stock of TER Alsace edit

Hey !

Cordialement, Kevin Benoit [Let's talk about it!] 08:33, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Smiley.toerist (talk) 09:02, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah, je n'avais pas vu ! Autant pour moi. Parfait, alors. Cordialement, Kevin Benoit [Let's talk about it!] 11:07, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Mariemont Splitsing.jpg edit

Hi Smiley.toerist, in your last comment on VP you suggested to let both "duplicate" images stay. However, shortly thereafter you tagged one of them for dupe-speedy, which I then performed without knowing of your earlier VP comment, which then led to this discussion on my talkpage. Am I correct to assume that your later edit expresses your "final will"? --Túrelio (talk) 12:44, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but I had some hesitation because the corrected version (without haze) is so much smaller. The community often prefers to keep the biggest images and edit them themselves. It was my mistake, I didn't realize I had already uploaded the image, otherwise I would have just uploaded the newer version and the old version would stil be available. The commons should signal that there is already a version with capital letter extention. Smiley.toerist (talk) 12:57, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for your comments on the deletion request, I will try to sort the files:
  • architecture is the main subject
  • architecture is not the main subject, possible COM:DM to discuss
  • COM:DM (basically files I really shouldn't have listed.).

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hopefully this shouldn't be a problem - a better name should be Category:Railcars of Belgium. Thanks.Mddkpp (talk) 12:52, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

To long a name edit

I messed up a file name with an unintended extra (Dutch) description sentence in the name. The rename was refused as no valid reason. Come on! I agree that "To long a Name" is not a valid reason, but junk in the name is.

I believe you have incorrectly piped the {{Rename}}. I have corrected it but I think you should still define a better rationale per rename criteria.

Is there some procedure or tool to correct perspective problems? (leaning towers etc) One example is File:HAL Rotterdam terminal en schip.JPG, where someone corrected the image with File:HAL Rotterdam terminal en schip1a.JPG.Smiley.toerist (talk) 08:01, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Gimp, among others, does it. Gimp 2.8: tools/transformation/perspective --Jwh (talk) 08:26, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
But GIMP does not have the ability to correct barrel/pincushion distortion, does it? /ℇsquilo 12:24, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
You can find this tool under Filters > Distorts > Lens Distortion... There's a documentation about it on docs.gimp.org. Make sure you've got your GIMP updated to the latest version (although the lense correction feature has been already added in GIMP 2.3.12 beta).
