Hello, Ted1968!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Afrasiab paintings edit

Hi, interesting to see your uploads of the Afrasiab paintings. When I uploaded the scan from the book I thought it was the original, but seeing your uploads I think that could be a copy by a modern painter who removed the imperfections. If you can confirm that it is a copy, then I'll have the image I uploaded deleted because it is not the original therefore cannot be used here. Axb3 (talk) 10:53, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Axb3, I cannot tell precisely because I am not a specialist. I took these pictures in April 2012 and I don't know when the picture you scanned was taken or what is the publication date of the book... It looks very like the real one but the colors are not the same. I don't know if the colors could have been like this in the past years. But also maybe the colors of the pictures I took are not exactly as the real ones... What can I say? I tried to put the two pictures side by side, there seems to be only one diffrerence under the main body of the camel...Sorry not to help you better. May be you can look for pictures on the web...Tell me when you find something if you think about it. Faithfully yours --Faqscl (talk) 14:31, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
The book is from 2004, a book published to go with an exhibition in the British Museum, so it's a kind of exhibition catalog. There are other afrasiab pictures in it, for example the Chinese women princess in the boat. The colours are rather bright compared to yours, so I'm tempted to think that it is a modern copy or reproduction. It could be that the colours have deteriorated since, I'm not really sure. Here are a couple of pictures I found - mural, detail. I'll think about it, but I'll probably have mine deleted because I'm can't be sure. Axb3 (talk) 19:05, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure of nothing....I would suggest you to wait (the picture may be true) and to paste this discussion on the disussion page of the picture, and to ask people who read it what they think about it...--Faqscl (talk) 06:49, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour, désolée pour cette erreur. J'ai supprimé la mention dans le modèle Period parce que ce paramètre n'est pas supporté, mais je comptais la déplacer dans le champ « description », ce que j'ai finalement oublié de faire... File:Mosque lamp MBA Lyon 1939-11.jpg edit

Hi, my thinking was that all mosque lamps aren't made in glass. Some are in ceramic (see for instance File:Mosque lamp MBA Lyon D368.jpg and File:Mosque lamp Met 91.1.95.jpg), others are in metal (for instance this one). Category:Islamic glass art should probably be removed from Category:Mosque lamps. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 11:24, 13 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

That's a better solution, as most mosque lamps seem to be made of glass indeed. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 12:32, 13 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

File renaming template edit

The correct template is: new name
for example: Tile young man flowers - Iran - Louvre museum - AD 27812.jpg
If you would like to learn more, read the table on Commons:File renaming page, please.

Dear (User talk:Faqscl) Discussion edit

1.If the specific name Category: Shah-i-Zinda Mausoleum are not satisfied, you can remove it.

2.Discussion: In Category:Bibi-Khanum Mosque 1 pug named subcategory "Category: Bibi-Khanum Mausoleum" ???-- Шухрат Саъдиев 02:48, 23 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

 1. No Name Category:Shah-i-Zinda Mausoleum, so I it necessary to insert Category: Shah-i-Zinda in the category Category: Mausoleum in Samarkand
 2. Subcategory Category: Bibi-Khanym Mausoleum should be separated from Category: Bibi-Khanum Mosque in a separate category. The mausoleum was built in the XV century, it is intended tomb, not madrasas (Mosque), built in the XVII century;
 3. Two sub-categories Category: Bibi-Khanum Mosque and Category: Bibi-Khanum Mausoleum can be placed under a new category - Category: Memorial Complex Bibi-Khanum (nadkategoriya) or Bibi-Khanum. Sincerely - Шухрат Саъдиев 12:05, 26 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your work on these topics, but please do not remove artworks from Category:Department of Islamic Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art. Instead you should have something like Category:Islamic carpets in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as an additional category. The Department of Islamic Art is not synonymous with Category:Islamic art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art‎ - in fact, there are Islamic artworks in many departments of the museum, and some non-Islamic artworks in the Department of Islamic Art as well.--Pharos (talk) 15:05, 13 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Please stop uploading MET works edit

Hi Faqscl, I'm happy to see you enjoy the MET works, but you're currently frustrating a batch upload. Please don't manually upload these yourself. All will be put online on Commons in the next couple of weeks. Now we have to fix uploads like File:Tankard in Imitation of Metalwork Form - Iznik (Turkey) - 16th century - MET - Inventory number 40.181.2.jpg where you nested a bunch of templates. Multichill (talk) 18:40, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Multichill, I think it will be very nice if you upload with a batch upload ; but what I don't like is that the names of the files are not very significant (or precise), and the categories are sometimes not the right ones. Moreover the pictures of a same object seem to be uploaded without putting them in one category. This is what I wrote to Pharos a couple of weeks ago : Hi Pharos, thanks for uploading a lot of pictures from the MET. Too bad your titles and categories are not very precise...(For example in the islamic art department) --Faqscl (d) 11:17, 13 April 2017 (UTC). But Pharos did not seem to understand what I was saying. Quantity is one thing but quality is also useful !

I'll stop uploading manually untill the end of may. (I am mainly interested in pictures from the islamic art collection).

Take care.

Yours faithfully

--Faqscl (talk) 19:03, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! You won't be disappointed. I'm generating batches of 1000 files that User:Pharos is uploading. Currently I'm generating batch 109. It started at id 1 and looks like we're now at 5339 so it might take a bit of time before we reach the 450.000 region in which some of the islamic art collection seems to be located. Multichill (talk) 19:20, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
I checked the batches I generated, I counted a total of 25.000 new files for the Department of Islamic Art in the batches from 240 to 250. That should keep you busy! :-) Multichill (talk) 12:03, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks ! Please if you can, choose names for the files that are as accurate as possible. But I don't know if it is possible with your batch uploads...Take care --Faqscl (talk) 13:03, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Nested templates edit

I noticed on File:Dish with Seated Gazelle - 13th-14th century - Brooklyn Museum - Inventory number 42.212.9.jpg and several other of your uploads that you're using nested templates and in the nested Artwork a weird sorting of fields that looks oddly similar like the mistake the GLAMwiki Toolset makes (and I end up fixing). Nested templates are generally a bad idea because it makes it harder to work with the pages. My guess is that you're struggling with the upload wizard. The upload wizard isn't really that suitable for these kind of artwork uploads. You might to consider switching to a different way of uploading (basic upload form or external tool) or just overwriting the description pages with the right contents after upload. If you need some assistance in figuring this out, just reply here. Multichill (talk) 12:15, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Multichill, can you tell me if this file File:Platter_(Tabaq)_with_Chinese-Style_Landscape_-_Mashhad_(Iran)_-_17th_century_-_Brooklyn_Museum_-_Inventory_number_73.166.jpg is ok according to what you think is the best. I tried to use your template, and to insert it after upload as you wrote. I am not so familiar with templates and this kind of things. --Faqscl (talk) 13:54, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Not overcat edit

Nain ceramics belongs to Art of Nain, Iran, not Art from Nain, Iran, i.e. there's also ceramics still located in that city. Just for the notice, Iranian and Italian cities are using three different art-related categories (of/in/from). --Orijentolog (talk) 18:44, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

well I think you are right !--Faqscl (talk) 18:49, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's still my "mistake", because category Ceramics of Iran stands messy. :( I started categorizing by dynastic periods, but not yet by province, city, of/from, etc. I'll rename Nain ceramics that it be like Ceramics of Kashan, now it's not clear does name stands for of/from. OK? :) --Orijentolog (talk) 18:55, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I started fixing it (Ceramics of Iran) and I hope it's better now, but it will require a much larger job later. Currently I'm busy with architecture. --Orijentolog (talk) 20:11, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Folio from the "Tashkent Qur'an" edit

First of all, the name of this in the museum collection is "Folio from the "Tashkent Qur'an". Second, it is also its name in wikidata. Which folio it is is perfectly clear, because of the catagorization and wikidata informations. Third - if you do this (I still don't know why, but you do), maybe "in the Metropolitan Museum of Art". There is no entity like "Metropolitan museum" (and it is very weird in english when the second part of the name is in a small letter). Fourth, maybe put a template "bad name" in Category:Folio from the "Tashkent Qur'an"? Why you leave it, when you change the name of the category? Conclusion - do something good, or not at all.--Nous (talk) 16:57, 10 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

I do appreciate your contributions in Commons but I don't like at all the way you speak to me when writing "conclusion : do something good or not at all" This is not a collaborative way to contribute, even if I may have donne somme mistakes. Renommage des fichiers de "Files of Louvre with bad file names" edit

Miniwark (talk) 09:55, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
