File:Ecgwynn.jpg edit

Regarding File:Ecgwynn.jpg, are you sure it depicts en:Ecgwynn and not en:Eadgifu of Kent? Archaeologia Cantiana, Vol. 36, 1923, The Picture of Queen Ediva in Canterbury Cathedral by C. Eveleigh Woodruff, M.A. (1855–1948) would suggest not. Greenshed (talk) 19:53, 6 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Greenshed: I have no idea, I have zero knowledge of that era, I just relied on the museum's attribution: https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw123250/Ecgwynn-consort-to-King-Edward-the-Elder. If they're wrong, I do know that they are receptive to corrections using the comment box at the bottom of the page; about a year ago I sent them a correction to an attribution on a different image and they fixed it. Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Looking for "Mormonism" alligator image (While the Watchman Sleeps edit

Hi Gamaliel, I saw your 1898 image you uploaded from artist Charles Nelan, with the "Mormonism" Aligator entering the US Congress, titled, "While the Watchman Sleeps." I've been trying to find the source for this, since it's for a project I'm working on. I see it's from the Ohio State archive, but I'm looking for what newspaper/date it's from. My guess is the New York Herald? Thanks greatly in advance if you are able to help me locate it. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kondorman (talk • contribs)

@Kondorman: Regarding File:Anti-Mormon_cartoon.jpeg I'm afraid I couldn't tell you. This is one of many cartoons in scrapbooks that people made over the years and then ended up in the collections of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. Most of the images lack context - who created them, what newspaper they are from, etc. The folks at Billy Ireland are really helpful and they might be able to give you more info about this particular scrapbook. File:Angelo da Clareno.jpg edit

With all due respect, I don't think that is a picture of Angelo da Clareno, but rather Agnellus of Pisa, for the following reasons:

 • "B" apparently indicates "Blessed"; Angelo isn't, but Agnellus is;
 • its source, the File:Certamen seraphicum provinciae angliae pro sancta dei ecclesia, refers to the "English Province"; all the others depicted appear to be members of the English Province of Franciscans, -which Agnellus founded, but Angelo was nowhere near;
 • although the "g" and "n" are reversed (Agnellus is not a common name), the caption "Proto Min Anglie" suggests it refers to the First Minorite in England -which was Agnellus in 1224.
 • I would not have noticed, except it appears that the chaplain's dept. at Notre Dame considers it Agnellus [1] ---I have amended the caption and categories, but not the File name, lest it somehow cause havoc. With all sincere wishes for a Happy New Year.. Manannan67 (talk) 05:15, 5 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Manannan67: I don't know enough about the subject to know whether or not you are correct, but it certainly sounds convincing to me. The attribution is from the UK National Portrait Gallery [2]. They may be wrong, certainly, and when they are I know they are open to corrections because they corrected an attribution on another piece after I sent them a comment. If you scroll to the bottom of that page you can see the comment form. Gamaliel (talk) 15:42, 5 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Just heard back from the National Portrait Gallery. "This print is part of our ‘Fleming’s Granger’, a collection of approximately 11,000 prints arranged and interfiled by Dr William Fleming to extra-illustrate a disbound copy of Reverend James Granger’s ‘A Biographical History of England from Egbert the Great to the Revolution’ (1st edicition, 1769) and ‘Noble’s Continuation’ (1806). Thank you for your suggestion that the sitter on the centre left is Agnellus of Pisa, not Angelo da Clareno. Such misattributions are not uncommon in Granger and your suggestion seems sensible. I have updated our catalogue accordingly." -Thank you for the link to contact them. Manannan67 (talk) 14:53, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gamaliel, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Majora/LicenseReview.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

Important: thou shalt not review thy own uploads, nor those of anyone closely related to you!

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.freenode.net. You can also add User license reviewer to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons!. - FitIndia Talk 13:09, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

File:Margaret Mann University of Michigan.jpg edit

Hi Gamaliel. I have a couple of questions about this file's licensing. The licensing does reflect that of the source given for the file, so at first glance it seems OK. According to the file's description, the date the photo was taken as well as the person who took the photo are unknown. The subject of the photo en:Margaret Mann (librarian) died in 1960 and the photo looks to have been taken fairly late in her life. The source website states that the photo was added/updated on September 15, 2017, and that it belong to a collection of photos created by the University of Michigan, but it doesn't state really anything more about the photo's provenance. Is this really OK as licensed? Is it OK to assume though that the source's licensing is correct, and not a case of unintentional COM:LL?

Please understand that I'm asking you about this since you uploaded the file; not because I think you did something wrong, but just because I trying to get a better grasp of file copyright licensing. Since you're an admin as well as a license reviewer perhaps there's something about the file that I'm missing. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:24, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Marchjuly: Hello! Nothing wrong with what you're asking, I don't take any offense at all. Even though the photographer is unknown, it's not surprising that the University of Michigan owns the copyright through work-for-hire, since Mann was a faculty member there for about 12 years. Because of that I'm inclined to take the website at its word, though I have no objection if you investigate further or raise this issue elsewhere. Gamaliel (talk) 02:01, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
That sounds reasonable to me. I only stumbled upon the file by chance; for some it was on my watchlist, and it showed up again when it was edited yesterday by a bot. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:11, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Page family of Virginia edit

Hello. Just FYI I am planning to soon upload high quality page scans from Genealogy of the Page family in Virginia (1893), derived from the original .jp2 files. Much higher quality than PDF grabs. So no need to upload crops like File:Mary Mann Page (page 71 crop).jpg. Cheers, --Animalparty (talk) 00:01, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Animalparty: Thank you! I was disappointed I couldn't find a good JP2 of that book. I'll hold off on cropping more out of it. Gamaliel (talk) 00:10, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
No problem! For Internet Archive scans (e.g. here) I often download the Single Page Processed JP2 Zip folder, and then convert individual files to .jpg using IrfanView, a free image editing program that's good for bulk changes like cropping, desaturating, file-type conversion, etc. --Animalparty (talk) 00:25, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I usually take the lazy way and use the IA uploader but it doesn't retrieve the JP2 files about a third or fourth of the time for some reason. Good to have a backup plan now. Gamaliel (talk) 00:40, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Animalparty: I downloaded Irfanview and tried your method for some images here, and it worked great. A bit time consuming, but I imagine that it will speed up once I get used to the workflow. Gamaliel (talk) 00:09, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Crops edit

Hello, Gamaliel. Perhaps you are not aware, but when you create a crop, automatically the description of the source copies to the crop's file page, and the same counts for the Categories of the original. This means that f.i. File:Alys Pearsall Smith (cropped).jpg still has the description that mentions all persons in the original. Even worse is that all the categories, belonging to six different persons, are also still attached to the crop. Perhaps you can pay a little bit more attention to those details, because letting it go unchanged leaves a mess. Greeting, Eissink (talk) 00:45, 3 January 2021 (UTC).Reply

I'm aware of it, I just forgot to check this time. Thanks for letting me know, I'll clean it up. Gamaliel (talk) 00:48, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I noticed that you created the categories Judge Advocates General of the United States Army and Judge Advocate General of the United States Army a few years ago with the plural category redirecting to the singular category. Shouldn't that be the other way around, like with Presidents of the United States and President of the United States, or with Judge Advocates General of the United States Navy (though Judge Advocate General of the United States Navy doesn't exist)? --wqnvlz (talk | contribs) 15:11, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sounds right to me. I've redirected the categories, and later today or tomorrow I'll fire up AWB and correct all the pages that point to the singular. Gamaliel (talk) 15:24, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi can you check for a specfic artist, engraver or illustrator credit, and update the file description page accordingly? Book is intended to be used for entire documents such as books or manuscripts, and it's use on a single image is misleading. A template like Artwork would be more appropriate.

It would also be appreciated if you could check for other 'extracted' images you uploaded, which may be using the Book template in error.

Careful edit

The author of a book isn't necessarily the creator of all the illustrations in it - thus, for instance, Sarah Josepha Hale shouldn't have been credited as the creator of the many images you uploaded which were sourced to her book Woman's Record, Or, Sketches of All Distinguished Women: From the Creation to A.D. 1854 : Arranged in Four Eras : with Selections from Female Writers of Every Age. Those were uploaded in 2019, but I only just now found and fixed them.

Similarly (and much more recently - earlier this month, in fact), Enrico Giannelli shouldn't be credited as the creator of the many images you uploaded that were sourced to his book Artisti napoletani viventi : pittori, scultori ed architetti : opere da loro esposte, vendute e premii ottenuti in esposizioni nazionali ed internazionali.

unknown is annoying, but wrong information is worse. DS (talk) 19:09, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
