Just upload them to en.wikipedia with a copyright notice and "non-free use rationale" Free is nice, but these images are so specifically related to the events that using non-free versions is not going to be particularly problematic.

Hey Rafy, I made some changes on the map today, and when I upload it the text looks very different from what you had, is it like that on your screen? It looks a lot bigger on my screen and I don't know why, I didn't touch any of the text from your edit. I am new to making .svg's and it always seems to export differently than what I had. I'm using Illustrator CS5 if that helps. Also - when viewing the picture in the commons page with the description it looks normal, but then when I view it in a direct link all the text turns from sans-serif to serif. Is this normal? Thanks. Make a map

A while ago I promised another user I'd help make a map, but I frankly suck at it, so do you think you could take over? The relevant threads are at w:User talk:The Evil Spartan/Archive 5#Map request and w:User talk:Magog the Ogre/Archive 10#File:European empires.png. Okay. I'm trying to place a more exact date for the capture of the city for the w:2011 Nafusa Mountains Campaign article. Well, they took al-Qawalish (as we learned later, apparently actually originally a pro-Gaddafi town in sympathy) some days ago, as well as some other unknown towns (I can get sources up for another if you want). It's a thumbnail issue which happen every now and then to heavily updated svg images. I'm afraid I can do nothing to help out as it's a technical issue with Wikipedia itself.--Rafy (talk) 19:14, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Ah, that explains it :). In any case, the svg check at http://toolserver.org/~jarry/svgcheck/stable/index.php linked from Commons:SVG Check points out that your versions of the svg file could in principle cause problems because they insist on Arial and Ubuntu fonts without giving a fallback font. If you cannot find an easy way of including a fallback font using your svg editor, the fact that you seem to be using Ubuntu :) means that you can do this trivially from the command line:

sed -e 's/font-family:\([^\";]*\)/font-family:\1,sans-serif/g' \
Tripoli_uprising_nofallback.svg > Tripoli_uprising_fallback.svg

with appropriate choices of filenames, and then you upload Tripoli_uprising_fallback.svg.

I don't know. I'm trying to remember the wording: they were showing G's compound on a map of the city, said G's forces had fled the military base (no name), but that there was still fighting going on - at which point they panned over to Mitiga - in Mansourah. Then they panned to the middle of the city. When I looked it up on Gmaps, that was Mansoura. So I assume that the "military base" was Mitiga, and there was a delay with whoever was doing the panning, so that when they said there was fighting going on and showed Mitiga, they didn't mean there was fighting going on in Mitiga. This is difficult to make out.[5] But it sounds as though the rebel they're interviewing says that they encountered fire when clearing out the last of the fighters in Mitiga, and then were able to secure it. (About 2 minutes in.) And before that shelling from what sounded like Mansoura. So I'm guessing that Mansoura (just east of the green at the port) should be green, and Mitiga red, but you'd better listen for yourself. Your ears may be better than mine. And no mention of the port. I would assume that those tanks came from G's compound, though there supposedly weren't many inside. But tanks drink a lot of fuel - what happens to them when they run out of gas?

I also hesitated before including the the area east to the Tigris. I guess the main reason was that the region spawned other Aramaic languages at later times such as Mandaic and Jewish Babylonian. There's no problem with including different chronological periods in the same map, but you need to make clear the way in which you're doing so. If including the green loop within the red loop does NOT mean that east Semitic is a subgroup of central Semitic, then you need to state this very clearly... I saw the note asking for help [ I want to add India as oriental orthodox Christian, as there are many Oriental orthodox in India, specially in the Indian state of Kerala]. I edited the post as the spelling of Kerala was wrong.

Kerala is in India so in my opinion you could just edit the map to include India. Less than 1% of us are Orthodox, about 8% are Christians. Hope that helps.

Levantine arabic in your map of Arabic dialects

Your global map of arabic dialects is a useful one for wikipedia.

I conducted some documentary research on the levantine arabic dialect, which allowed me to build the map you see in the Levantine Arabic article (see references there).

The sub-dialect boundaries are only indicative, but as far as limits between levantine vs. badawi and mesopotamian are concerned, the maps, especially those of Syria by Behnstedt show very clear cut limits, closer to the Mediterranean than you show. I suggest you could use this information to update you global map once more.

Generous Request

Hello Mr. Rafy,
I really appreciate your work, you have made some very interesting and unique contributions to WP.
As you may know already, my interest in the Arabic language made me interested in your File:Arabic Dialects.svg which is why I ended up doing much independent research on the subject because I knew the map needed a little fixing. I already posted the finalized updated file twice, but you don't approve b/c it's not a real SVG. To be honest I modified the image using microsoft paint b/c using inkscape would take me a long time as I don't know how to use it. But I should point-out that the version I posted was well researched and well sourced as seen on the file's talk page. Although it is not 100% perfect (and it never will be), I truly believe that my updated version is much more accurate than the original one posted, but I just don't know how to recreate it as an original svg. That is why I came here to ask you nicely if you could please recreate my finalized version as an original svg to make it the best Arabic dialects map ever! Thanks and bye.

I tried to use a translation tool to edit the labels myself, but the tool failed to create a valid SVG. May I ask you to edit the file yourself? Thanks. Are Qnoma and Qnome (in Syriac) loaned from the Greek, or do they have a different meaning unrelated to Greek gnoma? If qnoma translates gnoma, I think we should stick with the Greek when writing in English. — Alarob (talk) 22:59, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

AFAIK Qnoma (ܩܢܘܡܐ) is of Semitic origin non of the Syriac dictionaries I know says otherwise[8][9][10]. BTW Qnome is the plural form in Syriac.--Rafy (talk) 17:17, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Qnoma has different meanings in Syriac, it can be interpreted as hypostasis in non-Chalcedonian theology but for the COE theologians it came to mean prosopon or nature. Palestine's map

Why did you update a smaller version of Palestine's map instead of this [11]?--Uishaki (talk) 00:47, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

I removed the cropped part which reduced the size from 1.86MB to 376KB. The map portrays relations between Iraq and the PLO, and later the proposed Palestinian state, I found no reason to include Israel or Jordan.--Kathovo (talk) 09:08, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

I appreciate your edits of the map. However, there's a small mistake: The new South Sudan path has class sd (Sudan) instead of ss, whereas the remaining Sudan path has no class at all now (should be sd).

Also, in contrast to the previous version, there are now style tags for all individual paths. I think that's bad because they override the CSS definitions. Previously, one could e.g. just set a style for a class corresponding to some countries in order to color them, as indicated in the comment near the top. It also wastes space. AFIACS, the given styles are completely redundant with the initial style definitions, so just removing all style tags reduces the file size noticeably and restores CSS functionality.

Seems I can't upload the complete file on WM (I don't have an account), but here's a gawk script to make the mentioned changes. (I can send you the complete file some other way if you prefer.)

Arabic language in Iran

Hi, please edit File:Arabic Dialects.svg map whit detail from this map as you can see there no one speak Arabic in Bushehr province and there is a vast region in Fars province whit Arabic speakers. It's heavily used in many languages and seems to be the only surviving copy on the Internet, as the original page whence you took it is gone, it's not even in the Internet Archive. Could you try to locate the author of that page and find any proof of this image's age? Or, perhaps, find a book where this might be taken from? (Seems to be a rather lousy copy, so it might have been scanned from a quite small page.) Hate to lose it but currently, it's age is, indeed, unproven. --85.253.175.72 10:28, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
