First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help
More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.
Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

I couldn't access any of the Wikipedia's for many hours after I posted the question. I finally got on now. I couldn't ping my primary or secondary servers. Much of the problem was probably mine. Royalbroil T : C 02:24, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Ni - please fix cat as you see fit. I thought it should have been right, but maybe it isn't. Got an injury yesterday in my right arm, so I'm not keen to do typing lefthanded to fix it myself. Ingolfson 09:46, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Since Commons:By location category scheme is being developed, there is no standard way. I picked keeping Category:Racing vehicles of New Zealand since it was easier. I will not argue if you change it to the other way. Royalbroil 12:17, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion warning Image:UniversityWisconsinStevensPointMall.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Farms

Hello, I read your comment of November 5th when reverting this [1]

I agree completely with your comment. However, a few days ago, the user has done massive similar and incomprehensible changes again. He essentially emptied the entire Farms category (including the removal of the entire category structure). Moreover, if a pic of a farm was nicely categorized in "farms in ...", he just removed it and placed in somewhere in farmhouses and agriculture, although, like you said in your edit comment a while ago, they simply depict a farm as is... I don't know what he's doing, but emptying and removing entire logical category structure doesn't seem to be what we need. If you have any thoughts on that, you're welcome,... ;-) --LimoWreck 23:21, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

re: Flickr upload bot

Thanks for letting me know about that! I had heard something about the bot, and for some reason I thought that you had to be registered with the bot to use it. It looks really easy, though, after looking into it now. Do you know if it's possible to use it to upload a cropped version of a Flickr image (which I often do), from a local source on my computer? I'll go ahead and just test the bot (not in a bad way!), using a new TobyMac picture that I was going to upload soon. I appreciate the heads-up. :) JamieS93 13:18, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Different "trusted user"s

It may be a bit bureaucratic, but here at Commons we have different areas where users can apply for Trusted User status, being "trusted" in one area does not (yet) mean you will be "trusted" in another. You've just applied to be trusted as a Flickr-reviewer. That's well and good, and I'll support you there. (What I tried to) talk you into at my talk was Trusted user for MediaMoveBot sp that you will be allowed to command a bot move of images:Commons_talk:MediaMoveBot/CheckPage... The first (Flickr) is as you have seen sort of a vote (as you may have seen), the latter would be one-click-approved by the first admin. who passes by and knows you or checks editcount/participation in other projects. Flickr images

Baraboo

I actually do believe it's the only Baraboo in the world (a rather unique corruption of a local French settler's name), but no harm in consistency. — Laura Scudder | Talk 02:39, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm glad that you agree for the consistency reason, even if it is the only Baraboo in the world. It is world famous for the circus, so that may have spawned other tiny derivatives. Royalbroil 04:03, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello

I have a sense of déjà vu, but what the hell, would you like me to nominate you for adminship on Commons? You seem to have all the right sort of experience and I'm pretty confident you'd pass. It looks like you'd find some use for the extra buttons. I think you'll find the process is much less daunting here than on enwiki. What do you think? WJBscribe (talk) 12:30, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Déjà vu all over again! I don't think that there's a rule against a person nominating someone for adminship on 2 different Wikimedia projects. I thought that you had retired? I'll think about it and I'll review other adminship nominations to see how it works. Royalbroil 00:40, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
I have retired - at least as far as enwiki is concerned - but I found myself with a little time free (only a fraction of what I used to have for editing wikimedia projects mind you) and though I'd offer to help here again where things are a bit quieter. Do have look and see what you think - RfA is usually pretty free of drama over here. WJBscribe (talk) 00:47, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
I wasn't worried about drama. I have noticed a huge difference between discussion on Commons versus the English Wikipedia. I'm delighted with how things are going on the Wikipedia projects. I think my ego would have been bruised had I not succeeded in my English Wikipedia RFA. I'm much more confident in my standing now. I think Commons adminship would be helpful, as I do review flickr images and find copyright violations. Sure, you can nominate me. Royalbroil 01:00, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
OK - see Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Royalbroil. Add a comment under my nom accepting and say anything else you feel like. Good luck, WJBscribe (talk) 01:17, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Royalbroil, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

Also consider joining #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Ask any channel operator for an invite exemption (or anyone in the channel may /invite you in temporarily). All admins from all projects are welcome.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....

EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:46, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations from me too. Glad it all went smootly! WJBscribe (talk) 16:21, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I thank everyone who spent time considering if I should become an Administrator. Your trust will not be misplaced. I thank WJBscribe for my nomination. I have listened to criticism and I appreciate the frankness. I've never been a fan of thankspamming everyone, so this is your thank you. Royalbroil 00:43, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

About User:Wagnelson

Hi there, Royalbroil. Sorry it took me this long to reply. I read the messages left to Wagnelson, and though it's clear that he doesn't understand Commons' scope, I don't think there's a language barrier, since those warning templates do autotranslate, and are pretty straight-forward, with links to learn more or get help (unless, of course, he didn't set his language to Portuguese in the preferences). I'll drop him a message, but I honestly don't expect him to reply. Thanks for warning me anyway :) (and btw congrats for becoming an admin!) Cheers, Waldir talk 20:29, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Just making clear, since you said "they can be autotranslated by a reader" -- I didn't mean one could use an automatic translation tool (such as Google Translate) to easily do the translation; I meant that the templates are automatically translated to the user's language according to their account preferences. I did read them in Portuguese, for example, because my prefs are set to use the Portuguese interface. You probably see the very same messages in English instead, since that is (I assume) your language interface. Still, you're right that a personal message is always better than an automatic warning. Let's see if he has any reaction. Cheers, --Waldir talk 13:49, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
I must have been typing it up too quickly, my wording was poor. Yea, I do use the English translation since I'm only slightly fluent in another language. I am able to pick out some words in some romance languages that are close to English & Spanish, like Portuguese, Italian, French. Royalbroil 05:50, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Undeletion request

Hello there. I'm sure you meant well, but File:Lil Wayne (cropped).jpg and File:Che'Nelle.jpg (files that you deleted) were actually not copyright violations. At the time I uploaded them, they were set with "Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons" license, also known as CC-BY-SA license.

OK, according to this list.

The author of these photos changed the license of photos afterwards. I understand why you were under the impression that the images were copyright violations when they in fact were not. Could you please undelete these two images? Karppinen (talk) 16:39, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

You're right, the original images that these were cropped from had been verified with the license CC-by-SA by the flickrreviewR robot, so I restored them. In the future, I suggest that you upload using the "It is a derivative work of a file from Commons" option instead so it'll be even more obvious. Cheers! Royalbroil 02:49, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

File:The Torment of Saint Anthony (Michelangelo).jpg

File:The Torment of Saint Anthony (Michelangelo).jpg is off the English Wikipedia main page. I would like to upload a higher-resolution image and tweak the text. Could you unprotect it? Thanks. Davidwr (talk) 01:18, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I just unprotected. Go for it! Royalbroil 02:36, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Your deletion of File:Pentax K-7 with battery grip and lens.jpg

Thanks for checking up carefully on the copyright status of this image. I had uploaded it, based on the (totally incorrect) licensing information on Flickr. Lesson learned by me. Thanks again. Moxfyre (talk) 05:44, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I read about the copyright issues on the flickr page, which is why I didn't give you a warning about uploading a questionable image. I don't believe it's indicative of your work. I often ask if the contributor took the picture before uploading an image. It's not a perfect world! Royalbroil 11:54, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Misspelled category name

Hello! I have found a misspelled category name. It's "Monastry of Saint John in Müstair" and should be "Monastery" etc. I was hoping that you could fix this, although I appreciate that your plate is very full. Jdsteakley (talk) 14:22, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Done I did the move and deleted the category. No problem, happy to help! Royalbroil 04:31, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Oooh, very cool. Thank you! Jdsteakley (talk) 12:25, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Misspelled article name

Hi, again. You did such a great job on that Commons category name. How about a smaller project: an article. "Whistling Woods International Institute for Films, Media, Animationa and Media Arts" has an extra a on the word Animation. Jdsteakley (talk) 12:29, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Done Wow, you had me confused for a while. You were talking about the article on the English Wikipedia. You probably were able to move it yourself, but I did it anyhow. No administrator abilities were needed. Glad to help you! Royalbroil 03:51, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Oops! Sorry -- I'm still finding my way around here. Anyway, thanks for the correction! Jdsteakley (talk) 04:02, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

File:Jeffrey Earl Habay.jpg

Is there some kind of template you can think of to designate File:Jeffrey Earl Habay.jpg as having a correct license? I know it's not a flickr image, but could you put the flickerreviewed template on there, since it is functionally the same thing? Maybe subst: it out and replace "flickr" with "Picasa"? Would you please consider doing that? --Blargh29 (talk) 06:15, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Good question! Would you ask it at Commons talk:Licensing? I bet this has already been discussed in some form. Royalbroil 11:57, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
I just came across Template:LicenseReview, which a general template for non-flicker free images. Since you are an admin, would you consider doing the honors of officially tagging this image? --Blargh29 (talk) 20:53, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Could you check File:CesareSiepi DonGiovanni.jpg, an image both here at at en:wp? Here, it's tagged as GFDL and CC, while at WP, it claims to be scanned from the album cover. I've nominated it for deletion here (at WP, it's already tagged for deletion as an orphaned nonfree image), but would you consider speedying it as a copyvio? Nyttend (talk) 01:57, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! I didn't expect that the image was online, so instead of tagging it for deletion at WP, I'd left a note asking for deletion to be postponed until the Commons discussion was closed. Because you found the link and because it was eligible for deletion as a seven-day orphan, I've since deleted it. Nyttend (talk) 02:13, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
You're welcome. I speedy deleted it here as it was a copyright violation of the album cover. I provided a link to that same image on the speedy deletion template. Royalbroil 02:18, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Deletion request

Could you take a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lake County Courthouse.jpg? It was nominated for deletion in May and has never been resolved; are such debates generally relisted as at en:AFD? Nyttend (talk) 23:02, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Many deletion requests from May are not resolved! There is no relist like en.wiki. I haven't close a deletion debate here or on en.wiki and I wouldn't feel comfortable except if the outcome was obvious. The culture here is a bit different, there is a greater good faith assumption that if the uploader may have been the same person then it's more likely that the image gets kept. I've left a message on the flickr image. Royalbroil 12:35, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Not sure how to do it, but perhaps we could suggest that a relisting procedure be developed here? I'm confident that relisting is better than simply having the request in limbo for months. Nyttend (talk) 14:34, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Lake County Courthouse photo

Hello Royalbroil, I have changed the license on my Flickr photo page of the Lake County Courthouse. I hope I used the correct license, if not please let me know. I am sorry for all the confusion regarding this photo. Thank you.--Pdepalma (talk) 13:47, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Christmas trees, real or artificial

Hi Royal - always possible I got the odd one wrong either way. That one does look artificial to me, but the image quality isn't good enough to be 100% certain. If you're sure it isn't, by all means move it back. I mainly did the split to reduce the number of files in the badly over-filled Category:Christmas trees. - MPF (talk) 10:17, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Could you look at File:Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (Milwaukee).jpg and File:Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.jpg? Nyttend (talk) 16:02, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Royalbroil!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Dwayneflanders (talk · contribs) has repeatedly uploaded images that are copyright violations. At his en talk page others have tried to explain copyright. However, he recently uploaded a few more images:

The user has been given a warning on both Commons and En saying he could be blocked for continued copyright violations. So what's the next step? (Intentionally haven't tagged the above as copyvios so I can still see them for a bit, but feel free to delete) Shubinator (talk) 00:34, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the block. Hopefully he'll get the idea. I'll tag the above as copyvios (oh, and I found the source of File:Divider1.gif: http://mrsjohnsonsroom.com/divider1.bmp). Shubinator (talk) 02:24, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I see you're deleting them. Thank you! Shubinator (talk) 02:26, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Deletion request

I moved an image file from German Wikipedia to Commons and ended up making a mistake by moving it twice with slightly different names. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to mark the redundant file in Commons with a speedy deletion request, although I've succeeded in doing this in the past. (Sigh! Guess I'm just one of those "cyber-challenged" Wikipedians.) Would you please help out by deleting this file: <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Datei-DanielChodowieckiFamilie.jpg> The keeper is this one: <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DanielChodowieckiFamilie.jpg> Thanks! Jdsteakley (talk) 14:45, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Permission to use photo?

Hi Royalbroil, I would like to ask for permission to use your picture, File:LarryTheLogrollerWabenoWisconsinWIS32.jpg, in an article I am writing for the bi-annual publication for the local WI non-profit organization that I work for. I could not figure out how to email you so I am posting my question here. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you. ~ MsBrieCheese

Sure, be my guest! I love that picture and have fond memories of that trip through Wabeno. If you have room to attribute me, please attribute as "royalbroil". Royalbroil 01:32, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Excellent! Thank you so much!

Page protection, please?

Not sure if you've seen this before, but I registered User:Nyttend backup at en:wp for use when I'm on public computers, and just today I registered User:Nyttend backup here at Commons. Both here and at en:wp, User talk:Nyttend backup is a redirect to User talk:Nyttend. Some time ago, I protected both the userpage and the usertalkpage redirect at en:wp, so that someone who gained illicit access to them couldn't keep vandalism-reverters from seeing the actual state of the account or cause problems otherwise. Would you be willing to protect User:Nyttend backup and User talk:Nyttend backup here for the same reasons? Thanks. Nyttend (talk) 01:31, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Wow, that doesn't fall under Commons:Protection policy at all! You're assuming that the userpage would be vandalized without any evidence. I'll pass on doing the protection. I did know that you have both accounts. Royalbroil 05:04, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Actually, it's not assuming; it's simply a possibility that I'd like to prevent. Whatever...Also, could you help me find an image of the city hall in Bellefontaine, Ohio that I uploaded some months ago? Soon after uploading, I discovered this photograph, so I had my image deleted as being out of scope — after all, we don't need two nearly-identical pictures of the same building. However, I'm now working with my local historical society, which is interested in photos I've taken of significant buildings in my county, so I'd like to be able to include this (now-deleted) image with the collection; but as I deleted the image from my computer, the only copy is now the deleted image here at Commons. I don't remember the file name, but as I don't have too many deleted contributions, could you try to find it in my deleted contributions, and restore it, at least temporarily? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 15:12, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Marian University images

Hi, Royalbroil,

Could you remove and/or update the photos on the Marian University (Wisconsin) site? The photos are out of date. The one with the chapel has the wrong sign, and both photos still say Marian College when it is now called Marian University.

Thank you.

Thanks for taking out another one of my contributions. [2]

That's the same one that you've been complaining about all of the time, Sulfur. PLEASE prove that it's your image and I'll start an undeletion request. That image is awesome. You need to prove beyond the Precautionary principle. Make me eat crow. I'm being serious. Royalbroil 19:29, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

No. Prove I am a thief. Wikipedia is what you've made of it. 72.131.33.107 00:49, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

And I'll add: If you believe my contributions to be copy theft, then be proactive and remove them all. Protect Wikipedia from me.

Rollback

I disagree with part of your statement; I don't expect to use the tool at all, and if I don't use it, I can't use it wisely :-) But I don't expect to misuse it if I do use it, so thanks. Nyttend (talk) 02:33, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:24, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Hortonville community hall photo

Hi - are you sure the community hall is now a "car dealership?" The dealer, Murphy Ford, is across the street, and it looks like he has some cars parked next to the hall (the dealership site is small) but I don't think the building is used for that at all - the inside has a small gym/auditorium and meeting rooms. 207.118.195.89 16:53, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

I thought it was, but some of the other photos that I took agree with you. So I've removed it from the description. Thank you! Royalbroil 02:05, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Deletion request

Hello, Royalbroil. I would like to request that you delete a Category. <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:E._Townsend_Mix> When I worked on Mix, I didn't notice that I created two categories. The second one is <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Edward_Townsend_Mix> . So now I've created a Commons Page <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/E._Townsend_Mix> and have moved the contents of the redundant Category there. Jdsteakley (talk) 15:53, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

To rename a category with a name that make sense like this, you're supposed to change it to a category redirect per Commons:Rename a category. Redirects are cheap. I have done the redirect. Royalbroil 02:12, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Great! Thank you. One question, please: Is this category redirect something I could have done myself, or is it done by Admins only? Jdsteakley (talk) 02:32, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. Anyone can do a category redirect. Of course discuss before controversially moving 300 images... but I know that you know that much. Royalbroil 02:52, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Royalbroil. I would like to request that you make a redirect from Commons Category:Abgusssammlung der FU Berlin to Commons Category:Abguss-Sammlung Antiker Plastik der Freien Universität Berlin -- I'm sorry, but so far I'm too klutzy to figure out how to do this myself. Thanks! Jdsteakley (talk) 00:48, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I'm wondering if we have any that could become featured. I believe that NASCAR needs something featured, and images are probably the easiest. However, I don't know if they can be an image from Flickr. Could you help me, and the project? Nascar1996 14:59, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

I think that some of my images are probably good enough to be featured taken at the Category:2010 Bucyrus 200. But what you're looking for is an image to be featured on the English Wikipedia, not here. On the English Wikipedia, the image needs to be the standard of what the topic is about, so a picture of the driver's car probably won't work for a driver. Commons images can be nominated for Featured status on multiple Wikipedias as well as Commons - each is separate. Yes, flickr images are capable of being featured as far as I know, but preference is given to images by Wikipedians. I think the closest thing to featured is the Alan Kulwicki article. Maybe you could start there and do a thorough review. Then it could take a second run at Featured Article. How about waiting 2 weeks until after I get back from a weekend getaway in a week from now. Getting that article featured has been one of my goals for this winter. Royalbroil 04:03, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I will. Have a great weekend gateway! :) Nascar1996 04:06, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Zippin Pippin

Could you replace the word "yesterday" in the caption to this good photograph with the rough date, as it will not always be yesterday and the wording of the current caption means that no-one will know how old the picture is in the future. Thanks! Britmax (talk) 10:55, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

The only place that I used the word "yesterday" is on someone's talk page in the middle of a conversation. The date is found on the photo's upload log and in the metadata. Royalbroil 13:14, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Category:University of Wisconsin

If you want to add "system" to the category name, I'm fine with that. I merely needed a category for an alumnus of University of Wisconsin, but I didn't have information on where exactly she attended. Nightscream (talk) 15:02, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
There's a very high probability that it was the University of Wisconsin at Madison because that's what the term meant until only a few years ago. Royalbroil 00:32, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Your welcome. By the way, at the oval track races, is it okay to get the fence infront of the cars? I'm probably going to be able to go to Martinsville Speedway next month for the Sprint Cup Series race; however, the seats we probably will get will put the fence infront of my pictures, unless I take them on the other side of the track, which might not be too good because of the zoom isn't good enough. I will not have to worry about this problem at Charlotte because I can take pictures of the cars on pit road, and the fence is normally not in most of my other pictures. --Nascar1996 02:57, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
It's best to not photograph the fence if you can avoid. Before I had my telephoto, I took both ways and went with the best. That is if you have enough space on your memory card. Royalbroil 05:11, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
I probably will have enough space (1000 images). I might be able to get pictures of the cars coming down the back stretch, as well as in turn 1 and tunr 2 (if the zoom can focas in that far). Nascar1996 11:05, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
There are more images to delete, File:SPRINT CUP PRACTICE.jpg and File:Jimmie Johnson Busch Series.jpg. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 22:47, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

A mistaken Redirect page?

I'm wondering whether this Category Redirect page <http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Monanthes&redirect=no> is inappropriate. After all, there is a real page for the Category: <http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Monanthes&oldid=52216244>. So does that mean that the Redirect page should be eliminated? --Jdsteakley (talk) 08:03, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

I think it's reasonable to have a redirect from both a gallery and category. COM:REDIRECT says ..."if there is only a gallery with little or no content, a gallery title can be redirected to a corresponding category"... Royalbroil 11:56, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Logos

Since logos are not allowed on Commons, shouldn't File:BAM Racing Logo.jpg and File:Inl logo 200.png be deleted? --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 01:34, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

That's not entirely true. Logos can be kept if their is little creativity - like the first one listed. It's just a bunch of letters in a generic font. See Commons:Licensing#Simple_design. The second one is not generic and is a good candidate for deletion in my opinion. Would you list it at regular deletion so that can understand the process (and drop me a link so I can comment to)? It's a lot different here than on the English Wikipedia. I highly recommend reading Commons:Licensing to learn a lot. Much of it applies to the English Wikipedia too. Royalbroil 03:52, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
Heres the link: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Inl logo 200.png. It is very different from Wikipedia, but I believe I'm learning quickly. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 13:58, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Concerns About Photos

Hello Royalbroil. I was randomly browsing through golf articles today and noticed something strange. In the article for Chris DiMarco, the photo posted in his infobox is of Lucas Glover. I did some digging around and noticed that there are two photos in the commons that are incorrectly named. File:Chris_Dimarco.jpg & File:Chris_Dimarco_cropped.jpg both are pictures of Lucas Glover. I'm still pretty new to wikipedia. You seem to have quite a lot of experience. Could you look into this for me? Dreamtheater1989 (talk) 16:09, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

I'd love to help, but I'm having trouble telling the difference between the two when doing google searches. Obviously I don't watch golf on television. Maybe someone who knows the difference between the two can do it? You can nominate it to be renamed by following the directions at Template:Rename. Royalbroil 04:29, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
I just nominated the photos to be renamed. Thank you for the advice. Dreamtheater1989 (talk) 21:31, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello, while I was looking through the recent changes for WP:NASCAR, I noticed several changes to Kurt Busch. Once I looked at them I noticed some pictures that look like they are professional, possibly by Getty Images, which normally doesn't have the right permission to upload to Commons, or WP. Here are the images 1, 2, and 3. The uploader is Crumm1ma, a user who created their account yesterday. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 15:53, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm glad to see that you are advancing here with images considering the difficulty that you had early on. They do look professional but that's not enough to delete (speedily). What you should do is do a web search to see if you can verify the copyright issues. If they are copyright violation that you nominate them for speedy deletion. If not, you can nominate for regular deletion per COM:DEL. One nice thing on Commons is the Precautionary principle which means it should get deleted if there is doubt if a file is actually free. The solid argument that you would want to use if that these images appear to be professionally done which is unlikely by an average person. Royalbroil 23:40, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I'll look. I have one more question, why File:Kentucky Speedway.svg showing the old version of the image instead of the newest one I uploaded? --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 14:59, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Also, how large is the image, the same as the old or larger. Its supposed to larger. It was larger, but somethings wrong with it on my browser. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
You probably need to refresh your browser. I don't completely understand why this problem is always so difficult for me too. You can check the revision history to see what the rest of the world is seeing. I usually just leave it at that and everything works out. After several days or a week it gets fixed on my computer. Royalbroil 12:40, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Since you are a administrator is it possible to delete certain versions of the image? The only version I need is the one that says "Removing two squares". --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 15:32, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
I can revert which I did. It looks like you already had it. My thumbnail shows wrong but the real image looks right. Royalbroil 19:36, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Yea, the thumbnail is the problem. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 20:03, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Well, will it work if I upload the same image to a different one and you delete the old? --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 20:31, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Why are you concerned about a thumbnail if the image works? Yes, a Duplicate can be speedy deleted. Royalbroil 04:12, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Well, on both of my computers, it still shows up as the previous formatted image on Kentucky Speedway. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 15:09, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
I see that there's a website notice about this problem: "System notice: There is currently a problem with thumbnail generation when images are replaced/updated, a solution is being worked on". So it's not just us. Royalbroil 18:29, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Okay, so should I wait, or upload a new one, and get the old deleted? --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 22:12, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Wait. Royalbroil 00:25, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I will be patient and wait. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 01:42, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Would it be possible for you to move File:Pocono Raceway.jpg. A image has the same name on Wikipedia, and the commons image can't be seen.--Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 03:10, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Image problem

I noticed something weird about File:Terry Labonte's 2011 Car.jpg. It seems as if it is the same image as [3], but has a different manufacturer. Should it be deleted? --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 17:50, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, because it is flickr washing. You've proven it with the "Getty Images". Plus Volvo has never raced NASCAR - it has been proposed. The uploader sure takes great pictures and must travel around the United States if you look at his uploads. I'm going to nominate them all for deletion as a group since they all appear to be a problem. Then they all will be deleted since this uploader obviously didn't understand copyright. Royalbroil 03:04, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
Okay. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 06:06, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

I have found two images that seem to be against policies here. File:Scot83-93.jpg is from Jayski.com, which is All Rights Reserved, and File:BK Racing.jpg which I think is a non-free logo. --Nascar1996 (talkcontribs) 22:56, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

File:Rm24.JPG

This user has a history of uploading copyvios, and only uploaded this image of Ryan Mathews after a previously-uploading image of him was deleted as a copyvio. I cannot find the original source for this image, but based on that user's quickness in uploading a new image to replace a copyvio, it is clear this too is a copyvio. Eagles 24/7 (C) 04:13, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

It's easier for everyone if you provide an explanation. I don't understand why so many nominators find it hard to give a quick courtesy explanation for the reviewing admin. Speedy is supposed to be obvious. I shouldn't have to dig hard and guess why it was nominated. I can't read minds (thankfully!). Royalbroil 02:18, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks so much for nominating several videos made by my students for Media of the Day! Jgmikulay (talk) 17:10, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Actually I was placing the "Media of the Day" recognition template on some recent featured media. I noticed that a video from a basilica in Milwaukee - which inspired me to add the template; it also inspired me to nominate a different farming video from Wisconsin for May 2, 2014 (File:Forage harvester - forage wagon 640x480.ogv). Thank YOU for all of your work inspiring students to help with the Wikipedia / Wikimedia movement! Royalbroil 02:34, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Former church

Wanted to ask you, before adding the category. Do you think this is a former church? File:Burlington Wisconsin History Museum.jpg --Mjrmtg (talk) 10:55, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for asking! I researched it on the historical society's website and the former Holy Cross Lutheran Church was donated to the society in 1964 [4]. Royalbroil 02:58, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in the categorization of QI

Dear Royalbroil! Your images were reviewed and have been promoted to Quality Image status. Congratulations! I invite you to take part in the categorization of recently promoted quality images. All new images with this status are automatically placed to the page Commons:Quality_images/Recently_promoted. They have to be manually tagged with relevant categories using the QI categorization tool (see link at the top of the page, the author of this tool is User:Dschwen). Very few users do this job now, so a large number of uncategorizated photos accumulates on this page time to time… --Bff (talk) 09:49, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Time for sports

Hello Royalbroil,
sadly, I saw your comment that you are abstaining because you have an image in the vote only now. My comment will therefore probably only help for the future, but you are of course allowed to vote even if you participated in the challenge - the only thing you are not allowed to do is vote for your own pictures (if those participating wouldn't vote, we'd lose a big part of our voters).
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 22:09, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello! It is problem because it make my work longer and I will not happy. This mean for me copy next datas from next sites what in comparision hundret is tiring. Eurohunter (talk) 10:49, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Sometimes is see linked red category for person in photo or category for one photo. This is ok? I should inform about deleted? Eurohunter (talk) 10:52, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
I mean two situations. First was about category for only one file and second about red link. When red links are ok, why poeples dosn't make it always? Eurohunter (talk) 15:58, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
I don't think that there is consensus about what to do with red links to categories. Royalbroil 02:04, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Category:MZKBydgoszcz

Hello! This category is double of Category:MZK Bydgoszcz‎ with wrong name. Integration is possiblle? Eurohunter (talk) 20:06, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Certainly they can and need to be. The first thing to figure out is which is the correct name? Then all of the files need to be put into this category (there is an admin tool that I could use if there are dozens of files to be moved). Then Template:Category redirect is added to the empty category. Royalbroil 01:59, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:US2 US89 split west edge of Browning Montana.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Tony Bennett jersey image

Hi Royalbroil, regarding this image of Tony Bennett's retired jersey, I wanted to check in and give my reason for editing. The aperture of the shot was far too narrow to be able to see the words clearly, and this also made the areas that should have been white into a medium gray. My edit, too, did not add white properly, but that has now been corrected. The green of the newer and current edit is actually darker than the official school colors show at the official webpage, so I hope that it satisfies your concern of not being dark enough. That being said, I am not opposed to the greens being darker as long as the white is kept white and not reverted to gray (i.e., as with the too-narrow aperture used in the original shot). The white words allow for greater legibility without clicking on the image. Ben Lunsford (talk) 18:49, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

I don't like the change but I agree with gray changing to a truer white like you did. My concern is that the hue of the school color is way too blue. Web color 006633 is reasonable. Changing the hue to a specific color is beyond my photo editing capability. I have another image with a poorer focus that has a truer white color. I could upload it to my flickr account if you want to take a stab. Royalbroil 02:31, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States - Thank You!

Hi there! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States. We're excited to see people uploading thousands of photos from all over the country! You and others have collectively uploaded 4,929 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States (sorted by state).

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, we have compiled a list of auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project.

If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is also great place to start. The WikiProject showcases the work that has been done so far in covering NRHP sites, and can also help you find articles that need improving.

If you're on Twitter, give us a follow   @WLMUnitedStates for updates, news, and more.

If you have any questions between now or the end of the month, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:28, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:29, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Royalbroil! How are you doing? I went to my local autodrome last weekend and took some photos of road cars. Sadly I couldn't find any Peugeot 408 or Mahindra Pickup. Good luck! --NaBUru38 (talk) 16:52, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

Well done! I'm envious that you got to see some racing in December! Where I live, this is the time of the year when all racing stops during the transition between summer and winter. Bodies of water are turning to ice and it will take about 4-6 weeks for ice to be thick enough for (hopefully) 6-8 weeks of ice racing on frozen lakes and rivers. I ended up attending 58 racing events at 31 circuits during 2016. Royalbroil 04:09, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:49, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

File:Lauren Daigle leading at NPM TLR, 2015.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:SteveDarcisDutchOpenTennis.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

If the derivatives that I cropped were based on an image that was deleted, then they should be deleted too for the same reason. The source image was deleted because "tagged unknown/no permission since 18 March". Royalbroil 23:57, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
