First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello! Could you please tell me what is the green color on that map??? I would be thankful for your response!

The green colour marks lowland, below 10 meters above sea level. The sand colour marks elevated areas, mostly glacial moraines.--Ulamm (talk) 22:02, 28 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Eindachhof_Slowenien.gif. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Re: Maps of African states

edit

Thanks for comments! de:User:Captain Blood made several topographic maps - mostly for large or European countries - but much is still missing. He does not seems to be active anymore.

You are quite right that the maps are too dark... I have been working with my laptop, which tends to distort the colours and brightness quite badly. Luckily it is easy to recreate the maps.

I think I will keep the current maps clean and without labels, but I could make another set with labels. Presumably this is something you had in mind: [1]? In principle it should be in SVG format, but until I can easily convert postscript files directly into svg, I'll stick with png. It should also be easy to change the labels into different languages, but I need to finish the english set before even thinking about it. – Sadalmelik 17:22, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Deletion request

edit

Hi, for your information: I have changed the deletion request on your drawing with the wrong name to Image:SamarraGreatMinaretDrawn.gif as you uploaded the same file with a different name. delete is the normal deletion process on commons, and in this case badname or duplicate is better. I have deleted the page "Show Image:Nigerkongosprecher.png", and have replaced it with Image:Nigerkongosprecher.png|700px at the bottom of the image page itself. I think it is clearer that way, as people can see it without having to click to another page. Can you mention where you got the data from to draw the diagram? Kind regards, Deadstar (msg) 11:09, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I took the data from de:Niger-Kongo-Sprachen and related articles in German WP.--Ulamm 18:26, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit
Image deletion warning Category:Farms in Germany has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

It looks to me you don't quite grasp the logic of categorization and you are moving around things without any knowledge on the subjects ! Different users have expressed opposition against your actions and different users have undone your actions since 2007-11. Advice: stick to the things you understand and when many people express their concerns regarding your actions, that should ring a bell you're on the wrong trail !--GogolMaps 00:11, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

If User:LimoWreck denies huge differences between aristocrate and peasant architecture in Belgium, I need some time to collect facts. But his removal of items from "farmbuildings" to "farms" in Austria and Canada shows, that his motive is not better knowledge, but his personal objection against a more specific (sub-) categorization.--Ulamm 00:22, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Subcategorization should be an improvement. I honestly don't see any improvement in those specific images as well, on the contrary; so I fully support the people that have reverted you in various contries. Again, I suggest you accept their advice and comments, and better refrain from disorganizing Commons ! --GogolMaps 00:32, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
By the way, it seems to me not only your knowledge of the subject is bad, but it also seems your not a native English speaker and knowledge of English could be better? Because I've seen you using the word "Manor", which strictly speaking isn't directly linked with farming. So you can't just use it as a drop in replacement for any farm related category ! Again the advice: refrain from disorganizing Commons because it would be a shame you'd be blocked for it ! --GogolMaps 00:45, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Those were not several people from several countries. Those were LimoWreck and his companion Foroa, who moved images from cat:"farmhouse" or cat:"farm buildings" to cat:"farms" in Belgium, Austria, Canada and USA.--Ulamm 00:51, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't fool us. People from the US have had to restore your actions as of November, people from Portugal have come complaining about your edits even before those users appeared. Self reflection is a good thing. And for the last time: persisting in controversial unsupported edits and defamating Wikipedia (or Commons) are valid grounds for a block; so you're warned.--GogolMaps 01:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
 • Don't talk to me in plural maiestatis.
 • LimoWreck and Foroa opposed to my initiative, from the beginning. And obviously they did not accept, that the difference between farm and farmhouse was seen by several discutants.
 • The histories of the images involved tell different things, than you tell.--Ulamm 02:23, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please, from now on, concentrate the discussion on Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Destruction_of_specific_subcategories in stead of scattering it around on the many deletion and move requests. And indeed, when considering that almost none of your contributions have the "top" indication, meaning that they have been quickly changed or reverted, one should wonder if you are not wasting your time (and the time of many others). --Foroa 07:39, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
LimoWreck reverted, while I was working.--Ulamm 03:24, 9 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ulamm and thank you for your comments! I'll write in English because at this early hour it's a bit difficult for me to get the Spanish spelling right...! Regarding your critiques:

 1. The Lusitanians are clearly and without any sort of doubt Indo-European, they were most probably part of a migratory wave from Central Europe that predates the Celts by some time (how much? nobody seems to know and the Ora Maritima from Avienus only gives a mythological narrative). And in fact they could be described as Pre-Celts instead of Proto-Celts. Many, however, prefer the latter designation because the first one hides the connection found between the en:Lusitanian language and other Celtic languages. As far as we can tell, given the reduced amount of writing material left to us (3 inscriptions...), is that Lusitanian is not quite Celt namely because it present some archaic traits (such as not having lost the initial P, as in porc/um - pig, generally orc/us or something similar in other Celtic languages). Authors like Scarlat Lambrino did consider it a archaic variety of Celtic. But I could change the Proto-Celt designation, so as not to have controversy over details.
 2. Your are probably quite right about the Aquitanian region - on that I am oblivious. I'll try to correct it.

Have you given a look at the source for my map (and the pdf version, with extensive and detailed information in Portuguese on the criteria used, as well as the long bibliography used to source the map)? I believe you may find it interesting. And if you write in Spanish you certainly can read Portuguese! See you soon. The Ogre 10:24, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Done some changes. Is it ok now? The Ogre 10:35, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nottinghamshire

edit

Hello,

Can you please revert to the old version of Nottinghamshire's map? The colours were selected via a process of consensus at the English Wikipedia. The whole of the UK use them. Jhamez84 15:45, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

You did so yourself. But you ought to keep my little improvements:

 • Showing the course of river Trent, also where it is a border
 • Showing motorways in another colour but blue.

And you ought to add another information which is much easier to get, if you live in Britain: A map that shows motorways should show railways, too. In my opinion that is a question of ecological responsibility.--Ulamm 04:09, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Ulamm!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Updating Niger-Congo languages

edit

Hi!

Could you do a small update for your diagram on Niger-Congo languages? The number of speakers for East Mande should be nearer to 2 600 000 than 26 000 000, which is evident from the size of the bar, too. Thank you! Malhonen (talk) 20:49, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, Kordofanian and Bantu should be updated, too. For the former 320 000 would be nearer to the truth than 32 000 000, and for the latter 210 000 000 rather than 21 000 000. Malhonen (talk) 21:03, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. I do not know, how I entered those mistakes. In the German version, I wrote the correct figures. :) --Ulamm (talk) 18:07, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Filbot, if you need some help about it, ask its master (Filnik) or go to the Commons:Help desk. --Filnik 05:38, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Category discussion notification Category:Cycling infrastructure in Germany has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Franzius Unterweser 1407 px MediaWiki und Browser

edit

Du kannst solche "Präsentationen" erstellen, allerdings nur in Deinem Benutzernamensraum, also z.B. User:Ulamm/Franzius Unterweser 1407 px.

Gestumblindi (talk) 20:02, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:529c Radfstreifen HB Wachmannstr.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Thanks for uploading File:Suggestiestroken Wehl – Niew Wehl NL.jpg.

File:Suggestiestroken Wehl – Niew Wehl NL.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:1409Brücke und Siele am alten Schöpfwerk Wasserhorst.JPG, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Rouffach, Notre-Dame: Hauptschiff mit Obergaden mit Fenstern

Herr Lamm!

Thanks for uploading File:2R F+Radweg Z.240 ohne Pfeile K.43 (OHZ) re.jpg.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Herr Dr Ulamm:

You uploaded a file some years ago, File:Oberschlesien 1921.png. It appears in the plebiscite map in such English articles as [2].

For that file, the type and amount of information provided is typical (usual), as compared to most other WIkimedia files.

However, as with most Wikipedia images, it is not truly sufficient to trace the content in a scholarly way, and therefore makes the material WP:OR if a source is not provided. That is, it is not possible from the file annotation, to tell unequivocally what source provided the information needed to present the graphic—in this case, which earlier atlas or other text that you used to generate this visual information.

For this reason, the content of the article where the image appears is not fully verifiable, per WP:Verify. Also, there is no way to answer simple technical questions—for instance, what the various shortened names (odd abbreviations) mean, that appear on the map.

My question to you:

Was this map re-drawn from Westermann's Monatshefte [Westermanns Monatshefte 1960 / 101. Jahrgang / Hefte 1 - 12 Verlag: Westermann, Braunschweig, 1960]? If not Westermann, from what source's information did you create it?

(Please, provide the source for your work. If you can provide a link, that would be most excellent.)

The following description appears in the accompanying description, without an English translation: "Die Markierung der Teilungsgrenze(n) erfolgte anhand Westermanns Monatshefte-Atlas (ca. 1960, "aktuelle" Karte in der damals üblichen retro-Darstellung).

Could you provide an English translation—your preferred translation—for the above text, and add it to the image file at Wikimedia commons? (I could translate it, but feel that you should be allowed to translate it, since it is your work, originally. If you would like me to check the English, I would be glad to do so.)

With kind regard, and thanks for your contributions, I am

Hi Prof!
Incited by you, I've just completed the impressum.
For an internationalization, perhaps in a fortnight or a month, I'd prefer to create a Polish & German version, because of the names of the districts.
The names of the three states involved are also understood untranslated, I think.

façade/facade

edit

Cassel's German-English Dictionary, New York, NY, 1978, only lists "façade". Therefore, this spelling cannot be forbidden, even if many people less correctly spell "facade".

In English like in French and most other western languages, "c" in front of "a", "o" and "u" is pronounced like "k". Only in eastern European languages (Slavic, Baltic and Hungarian), "c" is pronounced as "ts" in all positions (or in Polish in front of or together with an "i" almost like "tch". The Turkish pronounciation is "dj" (there ç is "tch").--Ulamm (talk) 19:45, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

This is not a phonetic problem. This is a problem of use. The two terms and façade facade, are recognized by English dictionaries; but the most used term is facade. Avoid making changes to the captions you are not the author mainly by erasing the label module.--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 07:39, 30 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
"Facade" and "façade" are not two different terms. "Facade" is an alteration on fonts that have no ç, which is an extension of the international Latin alphabet, such as ä, å, æ, ã, ą, č, ę, ñ, õ, œ, ø, š, ß and ż.
The primary reason of my entry was the wrong preposition: "Façade from Notre-Dame de la Dalbade" instead of "Façade of Notre-Dame de la Dalbade". "From" marks a direction, also of development, while "of" marks a dependence, like the Latin genitive case. ("of Rome" = "Romae" but "from Rome" = "ab Roma".--Ulamm (talk) 08:59, 30 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

File:(CaW) 1dobsgBcT SW.tif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Bonjour Ulamm.

Bien cordialement — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chamois rouge (talk • contribs) 21:51, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

--A.Savin 11:07, 19 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
