Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hello,

I suggest you to change the license on Mostéfa Merarda a l’école indigène de Batna.png : You can not prove that the person who took this photo is dead more than 70 years ago (thus 3 years after the photo was taken), then the PD-old can't be applied and the photo could be deleted ; it would be a pity.

The PD-Algeria-photo-except would be more appropriate, imho ;)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

About the Wikipedias in Arabic Dialects

Dear Reda,

I have contacted you today because there are some new information about the Wikipedias in Arabic Dialects and Berber Languages. First, I have contacted Lameen Souag, a linguist from CNRS, about your projects in Incubator... As you know, Algerian Arabic as well as Berber varieties should be standardized in order to use it in wikis without facing problems of spelling... We have discussed all the facts and as he is algerian and he had done exceptional researches about Algerian and Berber languages, I had proposed to him to contribute to your projects... He approved... So, in order to discuss all the facts about your projects, please contact him at lameen@gmail.com.

As for me, I am a candidate for 2015 Board Elections... So, feel free to discuss with me about that at MetaWiki and vote for me if you want it. I had also created a page on meta about a common board working on Maghreb Projects which is entitled Board of the regulation of the use of the Arabic Dialects of Maghreb and the Berber Languages... I propose you to join it... I had also done some discussions with Language Committee and SIL in order to clarify some aspects of language about Tunisian.

@Vikoula5: I thank you for voting for me. I ask if we can do a Wikipedia in Maghrebi Arabic instead of a Wikipedia in Tunisian, Algerian and Moroccan Arabic and a Wiktionary in each dialect because I saw that we are very few for creating such work in each of the dialects. Hi, I see that you have added an exact geolocation for the photo (thanks!). While I can't judge from the content of the photo if this is accurate or not, a different photo taken in a slightly different direction from roughly the same place, File:Parc Culturel De l'Ahaggar (20).JPG, shows that there is a road very close to the location. Progrès en rapport avec les projets wikimédia de l'arabe tunisien

Cher Monsieur, Je vous ai promis de te mettre au courant des progrès qu'on fait régulièrement:

• On a réussi à améliorer le travail à propos de l'arabe tunisien sur Wikipédia en version anglaise. Le travail a eu lieu du 15 juin au 15 août 2015 et a été fait par les éditeurs des projets wikis en tunisien. Ce travail a été révisé par Mr. Lameen Souag et d'autres linguistes. Plus d'informations: Tunisian Arabic in Wikipedia.
• On a fait un nouveau orthographe de l'arabe tunisien. Ce travail a débuté au 15 décembre 2014 et a été fini le 13 août 2015. L'orthographe est basé sur Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft Umschrift qui est déjà utilisé par les linguistes mains il prend en considération le principe de la translittération de Buckwalter ainsi que les règles de l'orthographe arabe. On a réussi à créer un convertisseur des scripts qui convertit le texte en lettres latins en un texte en lettres arabes sans aucune faute significative. On a aussi créé un logiciel qui rend l'écriture des caractères supplémentaires très facile. Le travail est en cours de révision. Plus d'informations: Script Converter for Tunisian.

Je me demande si vous pouvez nous donner votre avis sur le progrès qu'on avait fait et à propos de ce qu'on doit faire très prochainement.

@Csisc: l'article est très bon, plain de sources, mais j'ai remarqué un probléme au niveau de l'infobox. Vous avez mis langue national (la Darija tunisienne est une langue véhiculaire). Mettez votre article dans la relecture et proposez le pour un aricle de qualité.

Bonjour Vikoula5, j'ai remarqué ceci : [1], mais tu n'as pas enlevé l'image de la section "unsorted" qui se trouve en bas de la page. Une fois que les nominations sont fermées et confirmées le BOT amène les images promus dans ces sections en bas de la galerie que l'on lui a indiqué lors de la fermeture : [2], il faut attendre qu'il ait fait son travail, sur ce point rien à redire, c'est ce que tu as fais mais tu dois déplacer l'image de la section "unsorted" vers la bonne section et pas te contenter de seulement l'ajouter. I linked my accounts so it's clear I am the same person and as such I can choose to license my works as I like to as long as at least one commons-compatible license is available. There is no GFDL and FAL on Flickr but if you look at the metadata (here and on Flickr) you see I released the files under 3 licenses of which the user may choose. Since Flickr's license selector only includes CC-By-NC-ND from these 3, the files are labelled CC-By-NC-ND on Flickr though on Commons, I can list all 3 options.

twitter c'est sur google image, comme dans la majorité des cas . Oui il ya un gadget qu'on peux activer sur commons pour fair des recherches!

tu a vu que le message sur une des photos de cette utilisateur que j'ai mis sur le DR de 20 October. Didier Drogba est une photo que l'utilisateur a telecharger et qui a été supprimer.

les photos que je soupçonne je les met sur Deletion requests. puisque l'utilisateur a mis a la fois quelle que photos avec copyvio, et les autres sont dure a trouver!. avec le temps je les trouve et je met le lien aussi pour quelle soit supprimer. Le DR est fait aussi pour que les autres utilisateurs contribue pour trouver le copyvio, si celui la n'est determiner le photo reste sur place.

par ex.: l'utilisateur Yasminekabli a mis 14 photos, 10 des quelle j'ai trouver sur le net! et 3 je soupçonne d'etre aussi un copyvio. et je suis presque sur que les photos sont de FB! j'ai mis un DR et elles ont été suprimer.--Vikoula5 (talk) 12:13, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

Dis moi... je viens d'avoir cette conversation avec Donatien. Il évoque le problème de suppression des photos de Kamara. La situation n'est peut-être pas aussi simple. Je n'ai pas d'avis sur la question actuellement car je n'ai pas restauré les images pour ensuite pouvoir les chercher sur le net. Mais disons que... y a peut-être un doute. Ce sont peut-être toutes des copyvio. Ou peut-être pas. J'aimerais réétudier la question, ne serait-ce que parce qu'elle les a uploadées dans le cadre de sessions organisées par le user group WM IC. Disons que copyvio ou pas... cela pourrait être un bon moyen de sensibiliser leur équipe à ce qui se fait et ce qui ne se fait pas. Qu'en penses tu ?

Pour l'instant, je lui ai demandé de lister les photos dont elle dit être l'auteur versus celles dont il semble qu'elles lui aient été "données". Si elle le fait... serait-il possible que tu précises quelles photos ont été trouvées sur le net, et si oui, ou (lien url). Si les siennes ne sont nulles part sur le net, je pense qu'on peut passer par une procédure OTRS pour qu'elle les mette sous LL. Pour les "images données", je demanderais l'auteur de la photo, puis son contact, puis démarche OTRS.
