Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Ge-flagge.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

{{PD-self}} is not {{Attribution}} edit

Hello Geagea,

please do not mark images that are marked as {{Bild-frei}} at Wikipedia as {{Attribution}} here at Commons. That is not the same! Please use instead {{PD-self}} or {{PD-author}}. ← Körnerbrötchen <✉> 14:13, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry my missstake. Geagea 17:10, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
In fact, Geagea can mark these images as {{Attribution}}. It is his right to ask for attribution for himself according to the law. Gridge 23:34, 16 October 2007 (UTC).

Hi Geagea, you've listed for deletion Image:Tbilisi from up.jpg on the grounds of being a duplicate of a existing picture. Descriptions edit

Hy Geagea, I've noticed that you've uploaded a lot of pictures with names in Hebrew (no problem) and without a description. That way, they're actually unusable unless you can read Hebrew. Would it be possible to add a description in English? It would very glad of you. Best regards and thanks in advance --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 00:04, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

A lot of pictures in wiki commons are without description and without category. some time I find them and put category and description. in the pictures that I am uploading I try very hard to give good category of place. I belive that the categories itself are good enough to give description. Anyway I'll try to put description and after I will finish uploading I will take care for a nice description to the the picters that already uploaded. Geagea 20:42, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Of course it's up to you to include a description and a understandable image name. Anyway, have you considered using flickr2commons to upload images from flickr. It simplifies the uploading process and, what's better, automatically verifies the license in flickr so that it's not necessary for an administrator or trusted user to verify the license. Best regards --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 21:28, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Category:Mutso, Khevsureti edit

Hi, I noticed you nominated a couple of categories for deletion, like Category:Mutso, Khevsureti, saying that there already is a category for it. The best thing to do in such cases is to add the {{category redirect|name of other category}} template, as in general categories are not deleted (unless they are obvious typos or similar and will never be (accidentally) used). (see Commons:Deletion_guidelines#Categories)

Also - your deletion requests were incomplete - the "delete" tag is not a speedy delete tag on commons (use {{speedydelete}} for that) and it needs a subpage + entry on the log before it gets processed (but in this case I fixed them up as redirects).

If you disagree with my changes to redirects and you still want the categories deleted, feel free to reinstate the deletion template, fill out the subpage and the entry on the deletion log too so that it can be processed.

Thanks & kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 08:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank's for the explanation. I use a bot that make automaticly the category if it exsist in commons. So it is better the shotr name. In the big English wiki we have only one Mutso, Shatili or Ardoti. I dont mind if Category:Mutso, Khevsureti will be rederected, but I have only the problem of chacking if some pictures are in this category. Next time I will use one of youer options. Thank's again. Second category by region - why? edit

Please, tell, why did you undo deleting of second category in some subcategories? Abkhazia is geographical region (it is not matter, disputed or not). Georgia is second geographical region. Abkhazia is smaller than Georgia so categorization by Abkhazia is predicter than categorization by Georgia. There is no need in 2 categories by region. There is no politics in deleting second category. For example Category:Sukhumi now (after your edits) is in 2 categories: Category:Cities in Abkhazia and Category:Cities in Georgia.

In all cases categorization both Category:Cities in Abkhazia and Category:Cities in Georgia is wrong. We should delete superfluous category. Dinamik (talk) 15:23, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

I have no opinion if Abkhazia is part or not of Georgia. It is not for us to decide if it so or not. The commos is not wikipedia and it no problem to make "double" category because it is only for finding a pictures to the articles. Sukhumi is part of Abkhazia, as a district of Georgia, or part of the self govroment republic, or part of a dispute indepndend country, or geographical area. And is also part of Georgia according to the Georgians or according to UN ect. It makes easy to find pic's and it's not wrong. Sorry if I accused you for politices. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi Geagea, there was a mixup i think: Ossetians was included in Category:Iranian peoples which describes on en.wp a ethnic group and not the Category:People of Iran. At Commons the Category:Iranian peoples was missinterpreted as Peoples of Iran, so i moved the files to People of Iran. Only the Category Ossetians was not related to People of Iran, so i removed the category suspecting a mistake. --Martin H. (talk) 12:03, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Category Tomaz Sanikidze edit

Geagea, you have added category Tomaz Sanikidze to a number of photos that I have personally taken. I know that Tomaz Sanikidze is a scolar who is researching Uplistsikhe, however what is the point to add this category to all images of Uplistsikhe? Could you please remove it from my images? Thank you, EvgenyGenkin (talk) 21:52, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Re:Kobuletians or Mingrelians edit

Hi Geagea. Yes, these are the identical pictures. The people there are certainly Kobuletians, not Mingrelians. The dress is definitely of Lower Gurian/Adjarian origin. I even noticed a correction (made in pencil) in the second pic "In reality: a Gurian cart".--Kober (talk) 07:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Still Adjarans I think. Their culture is very similar to that of Gurians. Let's have them classified as Adjarians. This would be more correct, I think.--Kober (talk) 08:49, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

New category:Nobility of tsardoms and regions of Russian Empire edit

As you can see I've created a category with more diplomatic name for nobility of Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Poland, Pribaltika etc. We can do nothing with the history, Empire really included all that can reach. Is this formulation good for you? It doesn't mean that they were under Russia when they lived, it only lists Empire's former parts. The problem why I do it: 1. the category:Nobility of Russia which I look after, is made by principle House of SURNAME, and we are going to rename some cats who are named not like this. In your category you prefers only SURNAME. If include Georgian names to mine, it will corrupt the unification. 2. The most important - Russia and Russian Empire are not the same. It's like difference between England and Great Britain. It will be mistake to consider some Georgian prince as nobility of Russia 'cos he was from nobility of Russian Empire. And for my curiosity: "Not all the Nobility of Georgia where part of the Tsar Nobility" - ok, it's not my competence but yours. Who wasn't? - the dynasties who disappeared before annexation? I thought that all Georgian nobility who existed was welcomed as part of our nobility. If you can and it is comfortable for you, couldn't we use Russian during this conversation, i'm always ashamed of my English.Shakko (talk) 09:58, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

I mean we can create new cat Nobility of Russian Empire and lists there all that you wants. Maybe also search between Polish the families who was under Germany and not Russia? But it will be waisting of time, 'cos I thought Polish nobility for example was all also welcomed in Empire as equal.Shakko (talk) 10:02, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
ok, i think the current decision is fair enough. What exactly info do you need for including Dadiani in list? Some documents with privileges from Emperor to the family? Or something not so official? As I know, for example, some Dadiani was Russian officer in ru:Собственный Его Императорского Величества Конвой (Tsar's private cossack squadron) during Nicholas II (and my great grandfather served under him) - so surely Dadiani were considered as citizens. If you tell me how it should sound, I can try to search it in ru-internet. Shakko (talk) 19:46, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
ah, so when you tell me that some families wasn't you meant the dynasties who didn't get confirmation... Interesting. I didn't heard about it, will know.Shakko (talk) 19:53, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Gea. First, regarding this file, it appears to be the statue of the poet Rapiel Eristavi in Zugdidi. I managed to read out the inscription on the pedestal. :) As for the Star of David, I have no idea, but will check in some numismatics books as soon as I reach them. --Kober (talk) 19:14, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm especially happy with the images of Georgian coins you have uploaded here. I looked in some books about numismatics, but found no explanation for the presence of the Star of David on David Ulu's coinage. What I have learned, however, is that David Ulu's coins are imitations of the contemporary coins of the Empire of Trebizond which also have the Star on them. The presence of this symbol on the Georgian Bagratid coinage can at least be explained by the genealogical claim of the Georgian kings from the biblical king David, but I have no idea why the Trapezuntines used the Star. Your question got me interested, though. :) So I will probably continue my research. --Kober (talk) 05:38, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Category:Knyaz edit

Hi, what a strange category? "Knyaz" is "князь" - the prince, so they should be in category Category:Princes, maybe as subcat Category:Georgian princes (obligatory with national adjective - 'cos we have a damn hell of Russian knyazes[1], and even German prince is the German knyaz in Russian). We should translate the titles here: German Herzogs all the same are in Category:Dukes - not in unique cat category:Herzogs. I suggest to move current in Category:Georgian princes or Category:Georgian princes of Russian Empire. By the way also you forget the plural: "knyaz" is singular, is wrong to name the cat that way - it goes like "knyazya" - but I belive it is not handsome for commons. If you need some more consultations about Russian language - ask.Shakko (talk) 09:07, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I say, that way this is useless category. You should rename it in Russian princes of Georgian origin or something. Now it look like category:Herzog or category:Graf - realy, very-very strange for user who knows Russian and rules of Commons. And why it is sub of Dukes? They weren't. There wasn't dukes in Russia at all, only Great Dukes of royal blood, who was by the way Great Knazya. But there is a tradition in English to translate this word.Shakko (talk) 12:39, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
