2007 edit

Description page edit

Question: you recently changed description page I changed myself yesterday: Featured picture up front, location separated from summary, etc. I feel it is more important for users to have the image description as close as possible to the image itself... as it was done in images I did not change (see all 2006 featured images, for examples), and all the ones I did change (featured pictures from mars 2007 to present, roughtly). Do you mind if I come back to a more classical format? Berrucomons 14:17, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Bonjour, its just a matter of taste, i would say. The file name and the category say all, the description is just a bonus information in my eyes. --Makro Freak 14:45, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Linear-macro-panoramic edit

Am I wrong, or is Linear-macro-panoramic imaging a pompus word for scanning?

You are wrong. The images were taken withe an extreme macro lens and stitched together like a panoramic image. --Dschwen 19:13, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK. I am wrong, then. It looks a lot like good scanning though. See here for an idea of what I think.Berrucomons 19:23, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
:-) yep, but the per pixel resolution is about 10 microns in my pic. You'd need a pretty good scanner for that. --Dschwen 08:18, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Let's say I have a good scanner then: I have scanned diseased leaves and wes surprised to see the individual spores of the fungal pathogen. Those are like 50 µm long. It was the first time in my life I saw individual fongal spores without a microscope...Berrucomons 13:37, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, I don't have anything in common with pianos (excepting this few pictures), nor with music vocabulary so I can't translate descriptions :( I've only drawed this pictures - working in cooperation with piano tuner Bechstein from pl-wiki (he probably isn't registered on commons) responsible for making descriptions... only in Polish :(

I've seen that User:Dbolton translated the description to english in my first piano scheme. Maybe he would help? Regards, Orem 15:40, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to see if the strange corona was a chromatic aberration, but when I proceeded, I found this irregularity (RGB separation):  . Could this be fixed? AzaToth 14:20, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good question! I'll check if these are in the original photos. Stiching was done "manually" using Photoshop. I don't think I moved each color separately. If you are interrestad in fixing or analysing this picture, you should perhap rather look at this one, from witch vallon moy res was downsampled. Although I think it is a very nice picture, I do not think it is technically perfect. There definitively is CA and stiching errors. See also the nomination page. Berru 16:22, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

If the original photos where available, I could see if I could do a restich, it's strange that one color is so off, but not uniformly. AzaToth 18:31, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
And, yea, it's present in the original, larger picture, it's the red channel that has been distorted. AzaToth 18:46, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
So sorry, I whent through those pictures, and apparently I don't have the original pictures I made this pano from anymore... Berru 15:40, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi, do you think we can get rid of this image or is it still needed? I mean, I have nothing against it, but I don't quite see the point in keeping it. I don't know what picture you are speaking about. 2909 vallon moy res.jpg is a featured picture, I do not think at all that it has to be deleted. 2909 vallon moy res-chromatic stitch error.gif was made by AzaToth. I don't think it is very important anymore, but I am not the author of this derived work. Perhaps you should ask him...--Berru (talk) 20:18, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the message. And congratulations! It's an excellent thing you start translating image captions. Most of captions in here are in only one langage. Generaly English, sometimes french, german, polish or japanese. It is bad, because it divides this huge image database in smaller, less general ones.--Berru 20:04, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

One more about translations.... edit

I was looking to see who was helping with QI and noticed that not only do you do all of the things for sorting the images and notifying people you are also translating them. This is an additional step in the process that hurts my head some when I try to project that onto the few weeks I was managing the QI stuff.
Exceptional! The good kind.... -- carol 22:52, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure I understand everything... Seems quite positive so thank you anyway! I generally don't sort QI but I just translate their captions. Sometimes, I add links or geographical precisions. I only notify people when I have problems translating their picture captions. It is quite gratifying to receive all the praises I receive these days. Thank you very, very much to all of you guys!--Berru 19:25, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Graffiti on Maro stern.jpg edit

Hi Berru,

Hmm, quite a tough translation :-) "Kaxero" is the Spanish word "casero" in a basque style. Casero in turn means home-made, home-loving or rural depending on the context. In this case, I'd say that it's the nickname of the painter or something like that, used as "rural" or "from the country-house". - Keta 17:34, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, thank you! --Berru 19:18, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cordialement, DocteurCosmos 07:31, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

;-) DocteurCosmos 08:25, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request to announce Valued images on the French Wikipedia edit

Hi Berrucomons,

You were kind enough to translate this announcement to French. I was wondering if you could do the project another small favour?

It is about time to publish the announcement on relevant sister project pages, and I was wondering if you could post the announcement on the French Wikipedia on one or more relevant pages, like the village pump, and the graphics lab perhaps (You probably know better than I how fr.wikipedia.org is organized)?

If you do not have an account on the French Wikipedia or do not have the time to do it, could you perhaps direct me to another fr user who could do it.

Once done, please update the thread Commons talk:Valued image candidates#Announcing VI on sister projects. As a matter of act you may want to have a look there to make sure another user has not done it already!

Happy editing, -- Slaunger 20:28, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I saw you added it to "Bistro". Did you add it to the graphics lab as well? -- Slaunger 21:07, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Assessment templates on translations edit

Hi, please don't put templates like Picture of the day or Assessments on versions of a file that were not actually a POTD or FP. Thanks! Rocket000 (talk) 23:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I did that? --Berru (talk) 18:36, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
You did do this for one image, but I think I may have confused you with another user that was doing it for multiple images. Rocket000 (talk) 18:51, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, that was me. Sorry. I copied the caption of the original image, a FP SVG with english text embedded, and I did not realize it contained these banners that did not apply to the translated image. I did this kind of thing for other SVGs (see my gallery) I will check and remove those banners.--Berru (talk) 18:59, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Jules Massenet - Le Cid 2e Acte, 3e Tableau - L'Illustration.jpg edit

Sorry, I hate to be a pain, but does the French version say the première date is 5 Décembre 1885? The première was actually on November 30th, but engravings take a while to make, so Victorian newspapers were generally about a week behind the events they cover. The Englih version could probably stand to be a little clearer.

This doesn't mean I don't appreciate your translation work: I've seen you do it on a lot of my images, and have always been glad that they were getting introduced to more people in more cultures =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:41, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Excellent work edit

Hi Berru, I just wanted to come and mention my appreciation for all of the French descriptions you are adding to images, :-) I'm interested in keeping Commons very much international and multi-lingual, but lack the skills to help in this regard myself! It's very encouraging to see your dedication to translation. Thank you! Maedin\talk 16:27, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

22.05.09 edit

Cher Monsieur Berru,
Berru

Hello, Berrucomons!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I still appreciate your translations edit

Bonsoir Berru,

I have previously given you a barnstar for doing translations to French. I just wanted to tell you that I still very much appreciate it every time you pop up in my watchlist with a new French translation. I am taking an introductory course in Frenchm and reading your translations of my photos descriptions are very helpful for training purposes (although I am not at all capable of translating them myself). Once again thanks for the huge translation work you are doing and have done here! --Slaunger (talk) 21:38, 17 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much! This kind of support helps me to continue.--Berru (talk) 19:25, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Berru, I just noticed the translation in File:Geotrygon montana Parc des Mamelles Guadeloupe 2010-04-04.jpg. When I read the French translation I get the impression that it says the photo is taken in the National park of Guadeloupe. Well, this is sort of correct, but... I do not know if it is clear from the context, but it is strictly speaking a zoo shot of a bird in captivity in the zoo Parc de Mamelles, which is embedded in/right at the edge of the national park. From the current description I get the impression that it is a wildlife shot(?), which it is not. But maybe I just misunderstand. Best wishes, --Slaunger (talk) 20:21, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
You are right. I misunderstood your caption. I'll change both french and english translations, since in both langages "park" is misleading : it can be a protected natual area or a zoo... --Berru (talk) 19:11, 26 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
I wish to echo Slaunger's praise above. Merci beaucoup, --Walter Siegmund (talk) 18:57, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wrong desc edit

File:Gorki-lenin-room-01.jpg -- wrong Français title, he was not arrested here, but just visited his friend's homestead for a couple of days and slept in this hunting lodge. Please fix.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 10:54, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Pereslav, and thank you for your interrest. I appreciate your remark, but there is no need to fix this: "Lénine s'est arrêté ici" means "Lenin made a halt here". If Lenin had be arrested, it would read "Lénine s'est fait arrêter". I can assure you that this translation is not misleading at all for French readers. I also translated the additional detail you added.--Berru (talk) 17:30, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. The reason was that automatic translation by Google showed this description like "The bedroom of a hunting lodge or Lenin has arrested two days in 1894". Also, not 2 days but a couple of days; maybe two, maybe three, maybe five, I just do not remember :-).--PereslavlFoto (talk) 14:20, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Description for Buchenwald Slave Laborers Liberation edit

I noticed you changed the description for File:Buchenwald_Slave_Laborers_Liberation.jpg from "slave labourers" to "Jewish slave labourers" on 1st May 2009. As many other groups were present (Gypsies, homosexuals, PoWs, etc) I was wondering where you got this informatiuon from? The description at the Nation Archives simply says "slave labourers". Thanks. 87.113.0.82 01:23, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I merged the existing description with another description from a duplicate image uploaded to en:, by en:User:Zoe, en:User:Ellywa and en:User:Gabbe. It did read <<Jewish slave laborers at Buchenwald. The very ill man lying at the back on the lower coughes is nl:Max Hamburger, who came with TBC and malnourished from the camp. He recovered and became a psychiatrist in the Netherlands. Second row, seventh from left is Elie Wiesel.>>. I did not verify this information myself. Sorry.--Berru (talk) 14:28, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 12:52, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

J'ai deux problèmes avec Langswich :
Cordialement,
Berru (talk) 19:07, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 07:15, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
