File:Mycena cf.jpg edit

--Toffel (talk) 00:13, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wrong renaming edit

I see you moved File:Kolumbiai nagykövetség, 2018 Terézváros.jpg with the rationale "harmonizing names of file set".

1. The original name was correct, because in 2018 the Embassy was in Terézváros.

2. The file name harmonized with all of my files uploade with , 2018 Terézváros.

3. The original file name was Hungarian you incorrectly renamed English.

VG --PerfektesChaos (talk) 00:13, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
--Dehio (talk) 09:05, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Lingua Libre files renaming edit

Hello,

Yesterday I asked for the renaming of 3 files from Lingua Libre, because of a mistake from the speaker during our training session. She set the Record Wizard to "duf", pronounced the words in the language but wrote them in French. You renamed two of them, thank you for that, but you seem to have forgotten this one. Could you please rename it into "File:LL-Q6983819 (duf)-Nékoro Joséphine-ve oo.wav"? Thank you very much. — WikiLucas (🖋️) 16:29, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
PS: As an administrator of Lingua Libre, I will have to rename many erreneous files in the future. I am thus requesting the filemover rights here.

Bonne idée de devenir vous-même un filemover ! J'ai renommé le fichier. Rester en bonne santé! Salutations --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 17:36, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

What is a meaningless or ambiguous name edit

I saw you renamed File:Omron Blood Pressure Monitor.jpg to File:Omron HEM-7000 20110121.jpg, citing criteria 2. In what way was the former name meaningless? Of course it was ambiguous, as is any filename – the name is not meant to convey all information on an image – but to me "blood pressure monitor" says quite a lot more than "HEM-7000 20110121", quite enough for a file name. The model number, date of photography and other related information can very well be told in categories and in the file description.

The user who requested the change was not the uploader. I think the uploader's choice of name should be respected, unless there is a strong reason not to.

I understand that it is easy to trust the user who requests a name change to be in good faith and know what they are doing – but file movers and administrators have the responsibility to check that a requested move is in accord with policy and best practices. I understand mistakes can easily happen, and in this case I neither have a strong opinion on what name is better nor know whether the uploader cares. I am just worried, because I have seen many file moves done on too weak reasons.

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Commons:Administrators noticeboard#Elliot Page - dead-naming in historical images. Sorry for not discussing this with you first. I'm not accusing you of anything wrong, but my interpretation of the guidelines seems to differ from yours (given that you've already moved the file), and I wished to get another opinion if my reading was right or wrong and how to organize other images of people who also has changed their name following coming out as trans..

According to the official English name? If so, why not rename to File:Side view of the entrance to TaiNEX2.jpg? Also, have you confirmed that his request is necessary before file renaming? Because the official English name I saw is "Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall2". See: the official website.--Kai3952 (talk) 14:16, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Next time, make sure you enact file renamings that are according to actual policy, not just random whim.

Danke und beste Grüße, --W like wiki good to know 14:22, 6 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Grüße --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 08:47, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I am probably giving you a lot of work. I curate the largest collection of turtle specimens in the world and am a known world expert at identifying turtles and also a turtle taxonomist and paleontologist. People come to me all the time for turtle identifications. I did not realize how many unidentified turtle photos were here. I can id most of them, trying to prioritize for ones there are little to no other pictures of at the moment, so they will actually become useful. Will probably do 20-30 a day in lumps. I can be reached on Wikispecies (my user page here just points to WS, if needed, if anyone questions an identification, am a Crat and CU, also an Ombud. renames for hyphen to endash edit

Please just reject rename requests that are just asking for a file rename based on an hyphen to endash, especially on files that have many uses. It is not an error, and that someone has a preference is not really enough reason to act. That it has taken two weeks to flow through to all the wikis should be an indicator that it is all just problematic. File renames edit

@Fridolin freudenfett and David V.: As regards this rename, IMHO it doesn't fall under Criterion 6 – non-controversial technical issues) but rather under contraindication #1: "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better." Missing spaces after punctuation are exactly the case, which must not be a reason to rename the file, unless the uploader himself asks for the rename.

Every file rename triggers a series of other actions, automatic link replacement, and in some cases, it causes technical problems with links that cannot be automatically replaced (due to the phab:T275058 bug, usages of redirected images become hidden and e.g. Commons:Monuments database/Images without id lists produce false positives etc.) --ŠJů (talk) 04:45, 16 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@ŠJů: I'm beginner on Commons, so I don't know criterions for renaming very much. In my opinion, the reason for change "XY.století" to "XY. století" is not "because the new name looks a bit better", but because it's mistake in Czech. But it's only my opinion. David V. (talk) 14:03, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@David V.: Generally, obvious spelling mistakes are allowed for rename, while simplified/undstandard capitalization or spacing, or missing diacritics are considered as "cosmetic" (typographic) issues and renaming rules dissuade from renaming such files. Names as "NoveMestoNaMorave.JPG" or "Nové-město-na-moravě.jpg" or "Praha10strasnice.jpg" should be also accepted. Filenames are not required to be typographically standard. Of course, it's no problem if someone individually improves any name (and there's no reason to revert the renames), but unnecessary bulk file renaming is exactly what the rule is intended to prevent. (Btw., spacing after punctuation is traditionally considered as a typographic issue, not as an orthographic issue. That's why especially older (less observant) people from pre-computer era are often uneducated about it. These issues were not explicitly taught in handwriting era.)
This apply for file names only. As regards categories, their names should be perfectly correct. (Just hyphens are often tolerated as a substitute for dashes, here at Commons, but such detailed rules or customs can change with time.) Also language policy (preference for English or scientific/original names and Latin alphabet) apply only for category names, not for file names. --ŠJů (talk) 14:48, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • And one more. @Fridolin freudenfett: Unless you have a good explanation why a Polish language diagram is better labelled in English rather than in Polish (with the added gall of calling it «meaningless») and furthermore why would such “improvement” be acceptable given COM:FR, I suggest you make hast in undoing this and similar renamings you’ve been doing, least you find youself at AN/U. -- Tuválkin 10:15, 5 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
E.g. to harmonize filenames. A quick look at Category:Mormon plan of salvation diagrams would have made that clear to you. By the way, I don't like threats and patronizing. Happy Easter. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 10:39, 5 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • I see you don’t have a good explanation: Filename harmonization is only a renaming concern when some kind of automated parsing is needed, such as when files are used in templates, which is not the case here. If you don’t like what you wrongly call «threats and patronizing», then avoid infringing against established guidelines. I myself don’t like filename instability and, in this case, the incredibly rude, anglocentric notion that anything that’s not in English is therefore «meaningless». -- Tuválkin 07:58, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze edit

Hallo Fridolin freudenfett,

We need your feedback! edit

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

--Berlinschneid (talk) 19:08, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nee, sorry, ich bin kein Admin. Frag doch mal z.B. User:Sebastian Wallroth. Grüße --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 20:13, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

This image is not Fred Perry logo but an image similar to it (see here). Please, do not request rename from one incorrect name to another one. If the image is not related to Proud Boys in any way, maybe it should be nominated for deletion? Ankry (talk) 21:30, 25 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hallo, edit
