Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Neveselbert and AlbanGeller. This is in relation to an issue with which you may have been involved.

George Ho (talk) 23:00, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

George Ho, I'm not connected in any way with JimmyJoe87. I was recently involved in a dispute with their latest sock :en:CrazyPeople23 (talk | contribs) on the Wikipedia article en:John Major. I reported him accordingly and my report is archived at en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Marquis de la Eirron/Archive#29 November 2019. Can you please rescind your report? AlbanGeller (talk) 23:05, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
On Commons, George, I have also reported another one of his socks at Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/JimmyJoe87#JimmyJoe87. AlbanGeller (talk) 23:08, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
I struck my assertions regarding JimmyJoe87. I've not yet backed down the rest of the report about two of your accounts. George Ho (talk) 23:12, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
George Ho, please assume good faith. The block for sockpuppetry on Wikipedia had to with my creating another account during my block for disruptive editing in 2016. This was a mistake that was made only ever on Wikipedia. You can read my apology at en:User talk:Neveselbert#Blocked for sockpuppetry. I almost never edit using Neveselbert on Commons, and if I do it's probably because I've forgotten to switch accounts. AlbanGeller (talk) 23:14, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
I erased the whole report (after problems to strike out the whole thread). I apologize for lacking good faith on you and both accounts, and I realize that I shouldn't have rushed without knowing the full story. What I should have done is asking you directly. Still, I'm stunned by all of this. Nevertheless, I hope we shall let bygones be bygones then, shan't we? George Ho (talk) 23:36, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

The user clearly isn't interested, so knock it off. Sro23 (talk) 17:44, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

OK Sro, duly noted. Jim may be suffering from depression, although I hope he reads this and understands that both us are still thinking about and remembering him. Of course, I apologise if I bothered him. He was just such an irreplaceable graphist, and I deeply mourn his departure.   AlbanGeller (talk) 20:41, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Thanks Sro23. The restoration of messages which I'd clearly repeatedly deleted without reply was, indeed, unwelcome.
AlbanGeller - if there was anything I felt I needed to say when deleting then I would have said it. There wasn't, so I didn't.
Your repeated reference to names/usernames you've found elsewhere is also unwelcome, and, frankly, bizarrely offensive (it even feels a bit "stalkerish" - so stop it, please).
As for your playground "depression" "diagnosis" of someone you know nothing about - no - utter nonsense, and equally offensive. Stop that too - it makes you look foolish (and I'll use the word "offensive" again, because you've truly earned it here).
Leave.Me.Alone, please. Here, and on all sites. The constant, undesired notifications from sites with which I have decided to have no further involvement are extremely irritating, to the degree I felt I had to spell this out. My notifications are still active against the possibility that someone may have a genuine issue/problem with something I did with which I might want to help - not for this kind of spam. Don't even respond to this post. Take blatant, obvious hints as a big, bold, obvious 'clue'. Silence is supposed to be a strong reply. Thank you.
Good luck. -- Begoon 14:58, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
ps: I just noticed that you even thought you'd just take it upon yourself to unilaterally fuck around with my talk page technical settings[28]: there's a note on your talk page that you're "trying to avoid potential conflict zones on Commons" - here's a "cluebat" - pissing around with other users' technical settings and wishes without their permission isn't how you do that. See that shaking thing? That's my head... I think it just fell off. -- Begoon 15:56, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

tagging of EC images

Hi Alban, if you think the statement at per https://ec.europa.eu/info/legal-notice_en#copyright-notice is invalid or does not cover these image of politicians, you should open one regular DR for all images together instead of individual speeedies, as this requires a discussion. --Túrelio (talk) 14:35, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Túrelio, would it be OK if I forwarded you the conversation I had with the EC Audiovisual Library? They told me (in no uncertain terms) that the statement does not apply to audiovisual content. AlbanGeller (talk) 14:38, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi, you don't need to convince me :-), it's just important for the community and my fellow admins. As we seem to have a lot of content under {{cc-by-4.0 |attribution=© European Communities, 1974}}, if the mentioned statement is sound, it has quite some consequences. Therefore, I would ask/recommend you to open 1 regular deletion-request (you can convert one of your no-perm tags into DR). (The reason for putting this into a DR is not to question your conclusion, but to make this problem known to all those, like me, who patrol new uploads or work on problem-tagged images.) If you hesitate to disclose the received original statement, you might forward it to OTRS (after opening the DR). --Túrelio (talk) 14:46, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
@Túrelio: thanks for telling me this. Would it be OK if I asked you to open a DR request for these files (on my behalf)? It's just that I have my hands full at the moment, and I'm not sure how to compile a mass DR. All the best, AlbanGeller (talk) 14:54, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Sure. After noticing the banner on top of your talkpage, I already thought you might try to avoid a DR to avoid "discussions". However, you would need to insert the rationale for the deletion-request. --Túrelio (talk) 15:11, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
There we are: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jacques Chirac, 1974.jpg. Please add the deletion-rationale and check whether the listed files are all of which you were aware. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 15:18, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
@Túrelio: OK. I'm correct in assuming you have access to OTRS? I can send the received original statement there, if that helps. AlbanGeller (talk) 16:32, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
No, I have no access to OTRS. I proposed this just for the case that you would hesitate to disclose the full text of the reply you had received, as OTRS can handle confidential material. Eventually the statement itself isn't even confidential. --Túrelio (talk) 16:37, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Túrelio, have you been able to download the link (to the statement) in the email I sent you? AlbanGeller (talk) 18:46, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Alban, yes, the mail dated from January 27th, 7:59. If not done already, please send it also to OTRS, as they can record/store the email. They will then give you a ticket number, which can be cited in the deletion-request. --Túrelio (talk) 18:52, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Take a look at the DR page, whether I've correctly summarized how you understood said mail from EC. --Túrelio (talk) 19:03, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I couldn't have summarised it more concisely.   Thank you. AlbanGeller (talk) 19:06, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

How did you get such a large resolution version of Leo Varadkar TD.jpg?

Hi there @Neveselbert: I was just wondering, how were you able to get such a large resolution version of Leo Varadkar TD.jpg? Normally on oireachtas.ie the largest version of a profile image you can get is about 400 pixels tall. You managed to get a 2,125 × 2,500 version. Would you mind explaining how you achieved this? Thanks CeltBrowne (talk) 20:37, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi CeltBrowne, I emailed info oireachtas.ie for the photo. Hope this helps, ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 20:45, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer. That's frustrating though; You'd think they would have enough sense themselves to use the high resolution versions of those photos on their own website. It's a bit laborious to have to go manually requesting high resolution versions. Anyway, thank you for the explantion, I might have to make a few of my own requests. CeltBrowne (talk) 21:06, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
@CeltBrowne: it's certainly frustrating. I asked them how I could download (in full res) the official portrait of a given TD, and they told me "Unfortunately we do not have the facility to download hi resolution versions of TD images from the website." and that the images "are necessarily lo res by reason of file size limits for the website." It's only after I persisted that they kindly attached the full res photo of the Tánaiste "as a courtesy or favour". ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 21:55, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
@Neveselbert: "as a courtesy or favour" Ah now, how hard is it to attach a few images to an e-mail? The whole thing is silly. These are supposed be "official portraits" of national politicians and they're uploading them at 400px size like it's 1997. This is besides the fact they're so badly cropped. Oireachtas.ie is one of the few website where we can get Creative Common licensed images of Irish politicians, do they have to make us crawl on our hands to get good quality versions while we're at it? But anyway, thank you for going to the trouble of getting the Varadkar and Martin portraits in HD. At bare minimum those of who've lead the position of Taoiseach should have full HD portraits available. CeltBrowne (talk) 22:07, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

What evidence is there that the digitisation is copyrighted? -- (talk) 19:09, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sir Winston Churchill - 19086236948.jpg makes it clear that the photograph is well established as public domain. There's no justification for marking it otherwise, certainly not through more obscure use of structured data that is hard to see, or making claims about 'sweat of the brow' which have no legal basis. Could you revert these please. Thanks -- (talk) 19:26, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Duplicate

Hi. To tag something as {{Duplicate}} it needs to be an exact duplicate (colouration, crop, file type, ...) per the guidance, not just the same image. If you think that we have a better copy and need to do a replacement then that can be requested at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands‎‎. If you think that a version is just plain rubbish, then please use a Com:DR.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:46, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

I am still seeing you nominate files that may be the same image though are not exact duplicates. Please get your brain away from the thinking that we can only have one version of each image, as these should not be speedy deleted. [Reverting my decline of a speedy is definitely not the way to progress.] If you think that an image is out of scope, then nominate it through a normal deletion request and there your reasoning that it is duplicate to needs, and is a poor quality reproduction due to the colours not matching the original. To which the community can make a decision.  — billinghurst sDrewth 20:55, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
Billinghurst, OK. Would it be alright if you deleted the two versions of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington by John Jackson.jpg that I uploaded? I would rather not be linked to this file. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 21:28, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
If your uploads are recent and unused, then you can request speedy delete, and there is a criteria for your use. If they are longer uploads, then just do a DR.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:48, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Billinghurst, I have done a DR at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington by John Jackson.jpg, though I would like to withdraw it so long as my uploads in the history of that file are removed from view. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 22:42, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Ouch, you have had merges done. Why? This search for one true image, and some sort of purity just causes issues. Merge should have been refused IMO, and I have asked for it to be undone.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:43, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Billinghurst, I didn't believe the two images were so different as to warrant two files separating each version of the same exact image. Anyway, now that the merge has been undone, can you please remove my uploads in the history of the un-merged file? ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 23:35, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

A beer for you!

File:Roland Wagner et Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.jpg

Hi Alban, In December you removed the file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roland_Wagner_et_Val%C3%A9ry_Giscard_d%27Estaing.jpg due to « ‪Source of derivative work is not properly indicate…‬ ». Sorry that I didn't react quickly enough at the time. I recreated the file, trying to be more accurate: this is indeed a picture (taken by me) of a picture taken by my grand-mother, part of our family archive. Feel free to come back to me if you feel that I didn't source it properly or if anything can be improved. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guméli (talk • contribs) 19:22, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Guméli. Can you please confirm your permission at Commons:Wikimedia OTRS release generator? Thank you, ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 20:11, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

DR requests typically override speedy requests

Hi. If someone has listed a file for a DR, then please don't go and overlay with a speedy request. Admins should be letting the DR take place when the file has been around for any significant period of time. This also allows wikis to repatriate a file to their wiki if they so choose to rescue.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:28, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
