First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Zdravím. Narazil jsem už víckrát v článcích na vaše fotky a byly pěkné a kvalitní. Nebyly však tady na Commons zařazeny v žádných kategoriích. Chápu, že dá trochu práce se ve zdejším systému kategorií vyznat, a rozhodně je lepší používat nekategorizované fotky, než aby nebyly použity vůbec. Pokud obrázky zařadíte alespoň do některého článku, je šance, že je do kategorií zařadí alespoň dodatečně někdo jiný.

Ale zbude-li vám čas a chuť, zkuste si někdy projít své fotky a najít pro ně vhodné kategorie. Výrazně tím zvýšíte užitečnost fotek pro ostatní. Pro "místopisné" fotografie je obvyklé hledat zařazení podle místa (dobrým východiskem pro vás je Category:Czech Republic, kde není těžké najít vhodnou podkategorii, Category:Regions of the Czech Republic) a zároveň i podle tématiky (např. kategorie pro cyklostezky, pro hřbitovy...). I pokud neumíte dobře anglicky, s pomocí slovníku si můžete prozkoumat alespoň kategorie z témat, jimž se nejraději věnujete. --ŠJů 10:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

V tomto se plně přidávám ke ŠJů - máte opravdu pěkné fotky navíc z oblastí naší republiky, které se skoro nikdo nevěnuje. Ale když nejsou v kategorii (aspoň v nějaké, které je pod Category:Regions of the Czech Republic), to jako by nebyly. --Packa 16:11, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Ahoj, na této fotce jsou vpravo částečně vidět hudebníci, podle České televize je to Doležalovo kvarteto, o kterém máme na Wiki článek zatím bez fotky. Náhodou nemáš nějaký záběr z té akce, kde by bylo kvarteto lépe zachyceno? Díky, Gumruch (talk) 23:36, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump.
