Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Copyright status of National Library uploads edit

I've noticed that you've been uploading scans of a number of recent books by non-government authors from the National Library of Nigeria, such as:

Are you certain that these texts are freely licensed? You've tagged them as Creative Commons public domain, but I don't see how that could be the case; these books were published recently enough that they should still be under copyright.

Apologies for the oversight, Free Knowledge Africa partnered with the National Library of Nigeria to digitze works in the Public Domain.

The MIDWESTERN NIGERIA AT A GLANCE (1971) is definitey a public domain work as its a government publication for the Old/Defunct Midwestern State.

On a closer look, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, THE CHALLENGE OF LEADERSHIP BY JOHN N. PADEN0001 and My Odyssey, An autobiography of Nnamdi Azikiwe seems to be copyrighted. Apologies for the mixup. Timmylegend (talk) 10:23, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
