You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Ghana edit

Dear Flixtey, Wikimedia Commons needs more photographs from and about Ghana, and you are doing a great job by uploading your own photographs. However, you are also uploading pictures and photographs made by others. Could I ask you to please (1) add useful categories to these photographs, esp. for all pictures in this category: Category:Pilot Phase (GLAM Ghana) and (2) replace the current "Source" given from "own" to the source used: the book or collection you have taken the picture from. Could you also add the original photographer of the pictures? (If unknown, use the template: Template:unknown photographer.) This might also have implications for the the license given and for usage permission. The owner of the photographs (museum or library) usually doesn't own copyright of the pictures. Dear Vysotsky i appreciate your thoughts on the above subject and would be working on them soon. However i wish to clarify that the pictures were taken by myself and at the Public Records and Archives Department (PRAAD). We have been given mandate (through an MOU) to take pictures from the institution for the purposes of a project we are yet to start and dubbed Glam Ghana. Dear Flixtey, Copyright is sometimes difficult, but the three basic rules are clear (permit me to leave out related problems like freedom of panorama and fair use, and restrict myself to photographs and paintings). These 3 rules are:

1. Copyright is with the author, not with the heritage institute or library that currently owns the material (unless the institutions have bought or otherwise taken over copyright from the photographers);
2. Copyright follows the law of the country in which the photograph is taken;
3. Copyright expires XX years after the death of the painter or photographer -the number of years is different in many countries, often 70 years after the death of the "author".

Back to this case: yes, the Source might well be PRAAD, but most likely PRAAD doesn't have the copyright of these pictures. The copyright is with the original photographers. If you are sure that the photographer is unknown, the field |author is filled with "Unknown photographer". Some photographs will most probably be public domain (like the photograph of Guggisberg), but others might still be copyrighted (like the photograph of Jerry Rawlings. ), which isn't compatible with Wikimedia Commons, per the licensing policy. The file has been deleted. Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change has information about sending the Flickr user an appeal asking for the license to be changed. Only Flickr images tagged as

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

I noticed that you added all names from other teams. Did you check with them all that those are the names that will actually participate this year ? If you did not check with them, please put back in comments the names of their teams members. It is better than they actually update this page themselves. Sorry if i got it wrong Anthere, but for some reason my team had a problem of their usernames not showinmg after they inputted their names. I changed that and I saw other ones that were not showing too so i though that it was probably an error of the others too but if that is not the case, I will gladly revert it immediately. You have contributed in the past to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. Your images have helped people learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed nearly 40000 images about Africa. Pictures from Wiki Loves Africa illustrate more than 7000 Wikipedia articles and they received... 278.859.973 views between 2015 through the end of 2018. WOW ! How does it feel to be part of this and really make a difference when it come to Africa representation on Wikipedia ?

This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "play" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa.

Wiki Loves Africa is a annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation.

When does it take place?
The 2019 competition will start on 1st February 2019 and close on 1st March 2019.

What should we contribute?
Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2019 contest is... Play.
This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. The theme Play! encourages the submission of visual representations of joyful and serious games, sport, and recreation in the form of board or mental games, physical fun or contests, playful interactions, theatrical and musical performances, etc.

In addition to the value your photos contribute to human understanding and african visibility on the Internet, there are several prizes on offer – including two separate prize categories for photos and media that encompass

(a) capture Women in sport or
(b) culturally specific and traditional formal forms of play, recreation or events.

Vos photos ont aidé de nombreuses personnes à mieux comprendre l'Afrique et à la voir sous un autre angle, l'angle des africains eux-même. Depuis sa création en 2014, près de 5000 personnes ont contribué au concours photo, en ajoutant près de 40000 photos relatives à l'Afrique. 5000 personnes, dont vous, qui ont fait une vraie différence sur la représentation de l'Afrique sur Wikipédia et en ligne. Mieux encore... ces photos illustrent aujourd'hui près de 7000 articles Wikipédia et totalisent 278.859.973 vues entre 2015 et fin 2018 !

Ce mois de février vous avez à nouveau l'opportunité de proposer de fabuleuses illustrations sur le thème du "Jeu", qui participeront à changer la façon dont les êtres humains à travers le monde comprennent les habitants et la culture de votre région..

Wiki Loves Africa, c’est un concours public annuel où chacun est invité à partager des illustrations via Wikimedia Commons, en rapport avec le thème de l’année, illustrations qui pourront être utilisées sur Wikipédia ou les autres sites de la Wikimedia Foundation.

Quand le concours se déroule t-il?
Le concours 2019 démarre le 1er février 2019 et cloture le 1er mars 2019.

Quelles sont les contenus attendus?
Des photos ! Des enregistrements audio ! Des vidéos ! Le thème du concours 2019 est ... Jouer.
Ce thème englobe de nombreuses approches, il est aussi intentionnellement ouvert à l’interprétation. Le thème Jouer ! encourage à proposer des représentations de jeux de détente et sérieux, du sport et des divertissements sous la forme de jeux de société ou de jeux intellectuels, d'activités physiques de divertissement ou de compétitions, d'interactions ludiques, de performances théâtrales ou musicales, etc..

En plus de la valeur intrinsèque que vos photos apporteront à la compréhension et à la visibilité du monde africain sur Internet, il y a de nombreux prix à gagner. Dont deux prix spéciaux pour les photos qui représentent

a) femmes et sport ou
b) formes de jeux, de divertissements ou d’évènements culturellement spécifiques ou traditionnels.

This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "transportation" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa. As with previous years, there are also many exciting cash prizes. Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. Images from the competition have helped millions learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed 18,000 images about Africa. When does it take place? The 2020 competition will start on the 15th of February 2020 and close on 31st March 2020. What should we contribute? Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2020 contest is... Africa on the Move ! This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference edit

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne edit

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

I hope you're well and enjoy taking photos for Wikimedia Commons. Here are a couple of quick updates on behalf of our group:

Our next virtual meeting will take place on Saturday, August 27. At this point we have two presentations lined up:

Suitable! Unsuitable! How to choose photos for a Wikipedia for children, “Klexikon” (Ziko)
The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)

Question from the CPUG Board edit

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you edit

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
