Raedarum publicarum statio edit

Yeah, Machine translation tends to suck, but given that there is little call for Latin, the machine translation tends to suck even WORSE! Check this out.

And btw, the first word of the title shoudl be Raedarum not Readarun... not that it's that big a deal (afterall plenty of wikipedia images have misspellings or non-native grammar errors in their titles, so this is hardly out of place), but I figured I shoudl at least tell you. --Iustinus 02:33, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I hate to do this to you, but it's still wrong. It should be Raedarum (or Rædarum), not readarum.
By the way, what machine translator did you use? Was it either of the ones mentioned in that blog entry I linked to? If not, I'd be interested in knowing about it. --Iustinus 03:54, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Another question: Do you know if the station itself has been given an official Latin name? I mean "Wallsend" is, obviously, Segedumum, and "Metro Station" is given in various articles on the subject as Statio Metropolitana, but I'd rather not invent a name for the building if there's already an official one. So is there some sort of sign over the entrance proclaiming it to be the "STATIO•METROPOLITANA•SEGEDVNENSIS" or something like that? --Iustinus 02:31, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, well I look forward to seeing such pictures. Let me know if/when that happens. In the meantime, if I write an article on the station I'll probably just use my guess and move the page if I get a more official name. --Iustinus 17:10, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Railway photos edit

Some are good, e.g. Image:Virgin Voyager 220003 2005-06-09 03.jpg (which is in focus, and is of the whole unit, rather than just one coach (compare Image:220012 at york.JPG, which is hideous). That's good. Several others are too. Great, but very respectfully:

However, some are less good, e.g. I mean what's going on with Image:Freightliner-66526-01.jpg (underexposed) or Image:EWS 66221 2006-01-05 01.jpg (motion blur)? and then there's Image:EWS 66221 2006-01-05 02.jpg and Image:EWS 66221 2006-01-05 03.jpg. And sheds aren't exactly uncommon. I bet even Eric Treacy had some dud shots, and the only way to learn is by making mistakes.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is would you put them in a Wikipedia article? If you can't say, on merit alone (forget that they're your phots), that you would, then I humbly submit you ought not to upload them here. Commons:Commons is not free web hosting, and I think as Commons admin, you should be setting an example. A few great phots are better than a few good phots with lots of mediocre ones.

I can find you decent phots, there are enough trainphotters out there. Most of them hang out at fotopic and I humbly suggest therefore that it would be a good idea for you to get a fotopic website and upload your photos there, and then consider which ones are the best and most appropriate for Wikipedia (otherwise you could use flickr like Morven).

This isn't anything personal, I like you really, I just want the best for Commons. Dunc| 11:01, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Claiming a fake ownership edit

Hi! Here is an user, User:Gabri-co, that is uploading image files about Spanish flags and coat of arms. He's tagging all these files claiming to be himself the owner of the work, with a combined license of use cc-by-sa and gfdl. In adding, all those images are also used on a webpage, http://www.telecable.es/personales/panizo/indices/portada.htm, where the autor of the web are claiming also the ownership of the designs about flags and COAs, and are all these copyrighted. Exemples: Image:Flag of Ibi.gif with [[2]], or Image:Flag of Elche.gif with [3], etc... (See user's contribs). I've asked first him if he is being the same autor of this webpage. In the case he isn't the same person, how is it proceeded usually here in Commons? Obviously these files would be deleted, but what about the user?. --Joanot Martorell 19:41, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Commons-l subscription edit

Hello Thryduulf,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:17, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Wessex_Alphaline_158859_2006-01-19_08.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Administrative notice edit

Deutsch

Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.

If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.

This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.

This message is sent out by bot. If you want to give feedback on it, you can do so here — 08:50, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Your upload problems were due to the fact that you transcluded your user license instead of substing it. Commons basically has the policy that user licenses must be substed, not transcluded, and the full form enforces this. Lupo 11:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Manchester Hub Rail Study edit

I was just reading this Network Rail report and thought one of the photos of Leeds station looked familar (page 2). Sure enough, a quick search turns up your photo File:Overview of Leeds City railway station 04.jpg. It doesn't look like you're attributed as required by the Creative Commons licence. Have they contacted you regarding using the image outside the terms of the licences you've released it under? Regards. Adambro (talk) 10:24, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good spot, they have not contacted me regarding this photo. In any case I would be unlikely to allow use in a document like that without credit. It seems they have not credited any of the photographs used, not just mine.
How do you go about contacting an organisation about this sort of thing? What sort of action would it be reasonable to expect? Thryduulf (talk) 15:45, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Thryduulf, just wondering if you could respond to my comments here. I'm hoping we can find some kind of common ground on it. Thanks. Kaldari (talk) 22:41, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

You seem like a reasonable person. I would like to ask you to work with me in developing a proposal that is meets the following objectives.

  1. Helps further the educational goal of Wikimedia
  2. Prevents possible legal battles, controversies, bad press, or investigations from authorities
  3. Helps promote the safe use of Wikimedia in educational institutions
  4. Allows content to be legally used for commercial purposes
  5. All other purposes stated in the talk page

I realize that there's a vocal opposition to this proposal, and since you started this vote to oppose it I would appreciate it if you would rescind it and allow the discussion to continue. As I stated on the proposal talk page, I've gone through a number of real-life setbacks recently and I haven't had time or energy to devote to this project. I do have several silent supporters who do not wish to be directly involved in controversy and since I do not believe this proposal is close to completion I do not think it should be submitted for approval at this time. - 11:57, 24 April 2010 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stillwaterising (talk • contribs)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Thryduulf,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Thank you! And there is more to come - I'm only about half way through what I've got from that day! They're all identified (as best I can) locally but it takes time to upload, describe and especially geotag them. They'll come online as I get time to do that, I was planning on dropping you a line when I had them all up, but as you have spotted the page already just keep it on your watchlist :) Thryduulf (talk) 23:23, 21 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Plymouth edit

Hi Chris, could you get your photos of the Royal Artillery memorial in Plymouth up as soon as practical? I have a use for them in an article! Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:54, 2 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bad faith edit

If you can't stop throwing around bad faith accusations and aspersions about me motivated by your clear and self-admitted bias in the Flag of Man dispute, perhaps you should refrain from commenting at all. Fry1989 eh? 01:24, 19 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • I have cast no such accusations or aspersions about you, and there was no bad faith from me what so ever. I merely stated that to me the behaviour you are accused of in yesterday's thread seemed similar to the behaviour you are accused of in the flag thread (whether you are guilty of that conduct or not, it is perfectly factual what you have been accused of) and called for admins to actually do their job (not as politely as I might have done I admit). If you are innocent of the accusations of misbehaviour then you should want an admin to resolve that you are. Thryduulf (talk) 02:27, 19 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you have. You comment that I "stands accused of using global replace to favour his view in a dispute...". Who accuses me of that? You. And you completely refuse to acknowledge my explanation for why I was replacing the flag. You are biased, you admitted it yourself, and you are continuing to paint me in a bad light. Fry1989 eh? 02:50, 19 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
I am biased in the flag dispute because I will always follow sources over speculation and assumption. Everyone who is not you who has commented on the global replace of the flag has commented that it appears to be an end-run around the protection of the image. Thryduulf (talk) 09:19, 19 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Nobody has said that except you and possibly SiBr4, who actually suggested having the protected file reverted which means they agree with me in principle about the file being maintained in it's last stable version during a disagreement. Fry1989 eh? 16:13, 19 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Comments Though I'm still undecided if the positon of the lamp is a mischief or adds to the workshop surrounding of the motif, I think, that the overall quality is good enough for QI. --Cccefalon 15:35, 4 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've just send ArbCom an Email concerning my enwiki userpage. Can you please tell me if ArbCom received it or not? --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 23:39, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it was received. I don't have time to look at it personally, and may not until Monday. Thryduulf (talk) 09:07, 28 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

My block appeal edit

I send ArbCom my appeal. I mentioned references to possibly contact, but I forgot to mention how to contact them. You and the other Arbitrators can contact each of them by the "Special:EmailUser" feature. Abd and Turelio are the only ones whose Email addresses I possess. I never contacted the other two via Email before today. Can you please tell the other Arbitrators that the references can be reached through "Special:EmailUser"? Thanks in advance. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 22:56, 6 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

This is the sort of addendum that's best sent as a second email, but I've passed it on. Thryduulf (talk) 21:03, 9 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:57, 10 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I sent a reply to your Email. There might be four or five Emails in your inbox. I forgot to click "reply-all" the first time, the second time resulted in an error message being returned (apparently, I can't Email two ArbCom lists at the same time or something like that), but the third time was a success. I'm sorry for any inconvenience. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 23:20, 8 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Shopping edit

Hi WRT https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Village_pump/Copyright&curid=15646050&diff=194163322&oldid=194148814 I suspect that the DRs became weighted by views from Meta. I have seen no evidence of admin shopping. Evidence would be nice, as you seem to be making an allegation of manipulating DR closures by someone. Please keep in mind that DRs are closed based on evidence put forward rather than votes or consensus.

PS not active right now due to health problem. May be back in a few days. -- (talk) 13:59, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'm not making allegations of admin shopping, but when no reason is given for one admin overturning another admin's close it makes it appear that that is permissible. Thryduulf (talk) 21:08, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Thryduulf,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks,

Correction to diagram needed. edit

Your diagram   needs a minor correction. Tabletop (talk) 12:58, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • I thought that I had explained the correction in the file containing the picture, but it does not appear to be still there. :-(
  • The correction is to the green square-ended Home signal on the Fast line opposite the yellow fish-tailed Distant Signal on the Slow line. This Home signal should definitely be another fish-tailed Distant coloured green.
  • It would also be nice to have a second version of the picture which would have had a reasonable change of alerting the driver of the trains that he was reading the wrong signals. At least one pair of signals would be changed. The best pair to change would affect the two Distant signals, one yellow and one green on a gantry with both on the Right side of their respective tracks. The Driver on the Right Hand Side of his engine, seeing the yellow Distant, would have realised his mistake, and started braking towards a safe stop.

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. adding infobox template edit

Hi! Could you add {{Information}} to all your files starting with :File:6024 King Edward I... and so (you can found them here). Since there are several and you are active I kindly request to add it yourself please. Thanks Triplecaña (talk) 15:46, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

I add them to all my new uploads, but my wiki time is not infinite and adding this template to all my old uploads is not my present highest priority across all the projects I am active on. I'll note that these particular photos should be top of my list when I do get time though. Thryduulf (talk) 17:15, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Category:Peter_the_WikiPlatypus edit

Category:Peter_the_WikiPlatypus has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again! edit

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Kryšpín's system edit

You might find the image File:Vojtěch Kryšpín (1876-1959).jpg or some use in your argument. This article in Czech which also be useful. Translating cs:Vojtěch Kryšpín would also provide a redirect target. User:Djm-leighpark(a)talk 20:27, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
