Image:Nopngs.gif
editHi. I noticed that you created Image:Nopngs.gif and put a bunch of POV, untrue statements on its image description page. Please take a look at en:Special:Contributions/PNG crusade bot for a list of images that benefited from conversion to PNG. Also, en:Image:WikiscannerScrsht.jpg is a great example of JPEG being a terrible format for non-photographic data. The JPEG copy is 114 KB, whereas the PNG copy is 14 KB. PNG images also support the full range of colors, whereas GIFs are limited to 256 colors.
That said:
- JPEG is fine for photographic data. But please don't recommend that people use it for non-photographic data.
- GIF is fine for simple animations. But please don't recommend that people use it for non-animated images.

Ike
editHi. If an image is within a subcategory like "Hurricane Ike in Texas" it does not need to also have a parent category like "Hurricane Ike" added as well; that is redundant to the Commons:Categories system. On a related point, I have suggested that "Category:Hurricane Ike (2008) be renamed simply "Category:Hurricane Ike"; see Category talk:Hurricane Ike (2008) and comment there if you wish. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 02:51, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

LIFE Photo Archive
editHi, Wikid77. I noticed that you have already uploaded an image using the new LIFE tag. This is great! However, please do not upload the high-resolution images on Google since they contain watermarking. The smaller resolution ones are of sufficiently good quality and do not have watermarking. Moreover, I have explained in the template documentation's copyright section why using PD-US is usually inappropriate. It is generally far safer to upload pre-1889 images, unless the author is confirmed to have died before 1939. As for your suggestions, I have replied to them on the village pump. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 14:04, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, Wikid77. I was thinking exactly the same thing. Time Inc. has said 97% of the photos (i.e. the overwhelming majority) are unpublished, meaning that photos created between 1889 and 1923 may still be under copyright. I think the safest is to start by uploading pre-1889 photos (and that's already a huge workload!!). If Carl Lindberg's assertion on the village pump that the Copyright Term Extension Act wasn't retroactive (I am waiting for Cornell to update their chart to be sure about this), then we can also upload images created between 1889 and 1897. Images created after that should only be uploaded if their photographer died before 1939. Your guess is probably correct: I don't think we would find many photographers in that category, although it is by no means impossible. I'm sure there's a list of LIFE photographers somewhere on the web, so with a bit of research we can come up with a few names whose photos would be OK on Commons. As for post-1939 photos, they are clearly not free. Photos which use a 1939+ year in the LIFE template should be automatically marked for deletion. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 19:38, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 04:59, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Template:Size
editThis edit removed the ability to localize the numbers in the user's preferred output language. The rounding error is marginal and doesn't occur in most cases, but a lack of localization affects millions of users. --Slomox (talk) 11:02, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- By the way: The fault lies not at the template, it's the Mediawiki software that sucks with operations like = 1, instead of correctly 2. --Slomox (talk) 11:34, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- I added a hack to the template. I hope the rounding errors are fixed now ;-) Please check the pages, where you encountered the rounding errors and if they are okay, please undo your edit. --Slomox (talk) 11:50, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- Let's see: there had been trouble on 20.2 & 20.4, which now appear with Template:Formatnum as:
20.2
= 20.2 &20.4
= 20.4. Okay, so I am restoring Template:Size to use that template. -Wikid77 (talk) 14:34, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

editThis media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Gary_Kildall_older_style.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
:File:Gary_Kildall_older_style.jpg ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. File tagging File:Gary_Kildall_older_style.jpg
editThis media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Gary_Kildall_older_style.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Gary_Kildall_older_style.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Unlinking Category:Uploaded with UploadWizard
editHi Wikid77
According to its description, this is for files uploaded with the Wizard. Is there a specific reason why you remove it from file description pages? [1] -- Docu at 04:55, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- I did not see the need to link the category, which already has more than 714,000 pages linked. Is there some reason why each image must be bloated with a link to that large nebulous category? -Wikid77 (talk) 20:17, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- If you think it should be removed, it would be preferable to change upload wizard. If you just remove it from random files, the category wont be complete. -- Docu at 21:57, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Nauru map bold.jpg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Nauru map bold.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
Your account will be renamed
editHello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Wikid77. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Wikid77~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
