You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,900 people contributing over 10,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen the winners yet, be sure to check them out here.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

Darn nuisance, eh? I've lost a few pictures because they were all about a statue or had a statue in them and couldn't find evidence that they were out of copyright. Maps have not yet given me that problem, but the legal principle of derivative work is the same. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:54, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Quite a nuisance as the portion was from a map made in 1783, way long before this or even the last century, that was found on the library of congress website in a book. The copyright has long expired, indeed, the fortification it shows WAS REMOVED AFTER THE WAR OF 1812. I just don't have the time to follow up on it. CaptJayRuffins (talk) 03:39, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Indeed we get busy. Plague has cut out most of my WP teaching and much of the bicycling that takes me to photographic targets, but still I find myself busy, for example in curating (mostly recategorizing) old pictures by someone else. Roy Eldridge home

Am I right in assuming that the File:RoyEldridge home.jpg is somewhere in Queens? Or is it Valley Stream? ----DanTD (talk) 13:00, 13 September 2021 (UTC)...... No need to assume, the address printed on the photo, 109th st, is in Queens - but not in the Addesleigh Pk neighborhood where the jazz greats made their enclave during the 40's and 50's. It is about a half-mile away as the crow flies in lower Hollis, on the other side of the R.R.'s Holban yard. Not quite as far as Eleanora Fagens who was in Pomonok, or Satchmo, who was in Elmhurst, but one of the Jazz Greats, none-the-less who made camp in Queens, NYC. 40.705652863658216, -73.76212745241254 CaptJayRuffins (talk) 15:32, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Folklore 2022 is on!

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 has started, Join us!

Greetings from Wiki Loves Folklore International Team!

Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.

The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. Through this campaign, you may become a part of a community dedicated to preserving our intangible culture, which has been brought and passed down for thousands of years.

How to Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. It’s simple: grab a camera, record an image, video or audio under the folklore theme and start uploading ! To learn more about the rules, check out our Project page on Wikimedia Common. Here are the exciting prizes which you can win internationally.

• September 15 – September 30: Applications for the election committee
• October 1 – October 9: Vote for election committee (ideally comprised of three members)

• October 20 – November 9: Nomination phase for candidacies
• November 10 – December 10: Elections
• December 15: Results announced

In the first step we ask you to be part of the election committe. Please add your name on the Election Page.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2023

Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. You can see the top-ten winners of the US competition here.

While the United States did not participate in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2022, I'm pleased to say that we're back for 2023 through the month of October! I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our 2023 event page for more information.

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
