Hello, Ixfd64!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

BotMultichillT 05:57, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome! By the way, I thought I added a category using the built-in HotCat gadget, but I guess it didn't work. :\ --Ixfd64 (talk) 11:55, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:CopBlock1C.gif. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

 • The licensing information is a little hard to see, but it can be found on the bottom of the every page on the Cop Block site. It states:

© 2009-2014 by its author and licensed under a Creative Commons - Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license unless specified otherwise.

There is no exception listed on the page for the logos. --Ixfd64 (talk) 20:11, 1 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm not 100% sure that the company intended to release the logo (something that identifies their organization) under a free license, but it is in black and white on their website. Sorry about that. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 21:59, 1 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I also had doubts that an organization would release their logo under a free license, but if their copyright information says otherwise... --Ixfd64 (talk) 16:47, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:SoapUI Pro 3.6.1 screenshot.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. --4nn1l2 (talk) 17:41, 23 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:Laura Secord Chocolates logo.svg edit

File:Laura Secord Chocolates logo.svg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. Fail re-upload to Wikimedia edit

Good evening, I am writing as a beginner who can not translate a photo from Wikipedia to Wikimedia:( If necessary, I wanted to translate the logo of AMD Eyefinity, but the original owner put there restrictions on the license. I tried to pick them up, with the help of an assistant "Move-to-commons assistant" to put it out (because the same logos are already there and you personally re-translated them). So I want to ask can you somehow explain how you did with the licenses to re-translate? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vitaliy2005 (talk • contribs)

File:AMD Eyefinit Technology logo 2014.svg — Wikipedia I changed the license, but still an error due to the template. Vitaliy2005 (talk) 18:34, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's because the image still had a fair-use template. I've transferred it to Commons for you. Ixfd64 (talk) 00:00, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for doing this. However, in the future, if I could still replace the license, what kind of template would be suitable for Commons, which then to take? I tried to copy from there to such a page, but it did not work? Vitaliy2005 (talk) 23:00, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Commons:Choosing a license has some useful information. Your transfer didn't work because the image page on Wikipedia had a non-free template. Changing it to the information template resolved the issue. Ixfd64 (talk) 23:09, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for putting the Instagram link, but I have a concern. The link is inaccessible without an Instagram account and the page can't even be archived via archive.org or archive.is. I'm thinking that the uploader will have to send a VTR ticket just to confirm. This is just in case the uploader decides to change the license or something. FunnyMath (talk) 20:06, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't think a VRT ticket is needed in this case. If evidence of permission is accessible on the web, then a trusted user can review the license and verify a work is free. I'll add a LicenseReview tag to the file. Ixfd64 (talk) 20:14, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'm trying to get other people's opinion on this just to confirm. See Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Permission_given_via_Instagram_link FunnyMath (talk) 20:18, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Plus, even license reviewers can make mistakes. For example, today a license reviewer mistakenly confirmed the license for a video as CC-BY-SA 4.0 instead of CC-BY 4.0. See [2] and File:Chinese balloon fall.webm FunnyMath (talk) 20:36, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello sir, Today a Bot user nominated a file that I uploaded for deletion. Since the user was a bot, I figured it was best to ask another user for help. The file that I mentioned is an insignia, which is correctly reference by the license tag {insignia}. Thanks for your help. Przelijpdahl (talk) 20:18, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Przelijpdahl: That's because Insignia does not indicate the work's copyright status. It only states that there are non-copyright restrictions. You need to include a standard license tag as well. Ixfd64 (talk) 21:28, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Could you explain to me what's going on with this image? Trade (talk) 19:32, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Although the AI-generated images have been ruled non-copyrightable, the author has claimed copyright over them. We usually use the Copyright claims tag as an FYI for non-U.S. users. Ixfd64 (talk) 19:42, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
So. No legal action taken against Wikimedia? Trade (talk) 19:45, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not aware of any such claims made specifically against Commons. "Copyfraud" would probably best describe what's going on here, but Copyfraud currently just redirects to Copyright claims. Ixfd64 (talk) 19:49, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Edu!: The video had a Creative Commons license when I uploaded this. It is now gone, but Creative Commons licenses are irrecovable. Ixfd64 (talk) 15:30, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Edu!: Never mind, you are right as it is from an unofficial channel. Supporting deletion. Ixfd64 (talk) 15:36, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
