Hello, Jtcurses!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Categoria amb el nom incorrecte

He vist que has creat la categoria Category:Train stations in Vallés Occidental i és incorrecte. --Catalaalatac (talk) 23:01, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2011

Hola Jtcurses, he visto que has marcado las imágenes

Muchas gracias. Platonides (talk) 17:05, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Platonides (talk) 20:47, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Platonides (talk) 21:45, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Stations of Barcelona Metro

Veig que a "Category:Stations of Barcelona Metro in Santa Coloma de Gramenet" has suprimit la categoria "Train stations in Barcelonès" que jo vaig afegir en el seu dia. De forma similar a "Stations of Barcelona Metro" has suprimit "Train stations in the province of Barcelona", etc.

Locomotive connecting rods has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Category:2012 in rail transport in Catalonia

--Bizkaino (talk) 20:52, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Cambio de nombre

Hola, Jtcurses. He rechazado esta petición de cambio de nombre porque en principio no se deben pedir cambios de nombre sólo para corregir mayúsculas y minúsculas, como dice aquí (Files should not be renamed only because the filename is not (...) correctly capitalized). ¡Un saludo! Strakhov (talk) 01:30, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Saludos, tyk (talk) 20:52, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Categories a Catalunya

Hola.

Jo ne he creat cap categoria "Penedès", ni "Empordà".

No l'he trobat.

Jtcurses: No sé què pretens dir-me amb el pràgraf anterior. Potser no em vaig explicar prou be quan vaig afirmar que les categories a Catalunya són molt més homogènies que a la resta d'Espanya posant l'exemple de "Cultural heritage monuments in...". Seré més concret: relacionaré algunes de les categories (sense ser exhaustiu) en les que tu has fet edicions recentment. Observa les categories i mira'n l'historial;

Com pots pretendre aplicar a Catalunya uns criteris que no has sigut capaç d'aplicar a altres Comunitats? Allà on has passat no has deixat les coses a mig fer?

Category:People by name

Hi Jtcurses,

why did you remove category:people by name from Miguel Pérez Cuesta? Best regards --Yoursmile (talk) 05:32, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Category:Miguel Pérez Cuesta is a subcategory of Category:People of Asturias by name, subcategory of Category:People of Spain by name, subcategory of Category:People by name by country, subcategory of Category:People categories by name, subcategory of Category:People by name. Therefore, Category:Miguel Pérez Cuesta is a subcategory of Category:People by name and add the two, it would be reiterative.--JT Curses (talk) 19:09, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

In this case it is a very bad Idea to delete the Category:People by name as in many cases I only know the name for shure and I need the possibility to search a person primarily by name, as I oftend don't know the country, the birth date and so on. --Kersti (talk) 12:52, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

I do not know if it's a good or bad idea, just know that the Commons rules say you can not to include an item in a superior when it is already included in a subcategory of this, because it is reiterative. I saw that this issue has been discussed, but I have not found if a firm decision to an exception in this case.--JT Curses (talk) 21:05, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

There have been some discussions of this topic. Category talk:People by name, Commons_talk:Categories/Archive_3#Flat_categories, Commons:Categories for discussion/2009/12/Some of categories "by alphabet" - there the people seem to think that this is a nessesary exception of the genreal rule. --Kersti (talk) 21:27, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

I do not enter into the discussion, but the fact is that the categories are created and, failing agreement in a discussion that I do not participate, I stick to the rules of commons.--JT Curses (talk) 21:38, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Sorry but most rules in Commons are not written rules and to stick to written rules doesn't work here. --Kersti (talk) 13:43, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

As I said I'm not going to participate in a sterile debate, but I returned to include all categories of Category:People of Spain by name and Category:People of Asturias by name in Category:People by name.--JT Curses (talk) 00:49, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Category:Basque_and_Galician_regional_elections,_2016

Category:Basque_and_Galician_regional_elections,_2016 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!

Metacategories

Hi, Jtcurses. Thanks for adding the Metacat template to some metacategories recently. You might not have known, but that template should always have a sort criterion parameter with it. For example, instead of metacat, it could be year or type. You use whatever sort criterion is mentioned in the category name. Thanks, and feel free to ask any questions you have about this. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:55, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jtcurses, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

Hello Jtcurses, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Feedback for Commons Android app

Hello,

Thanks for uploading photos to Commons via the Commons Android app! :) We (the developers of the app) have recently submitted a Project Grant proposal for the app, detailing our plans for the app in 2019. As a user of the app, we would love to hear your thoughts on it, if you have the time.

Cheers, Misaochan (talk) 10:48, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi again; sorry about that. We had misread recent file changes that involved the app, and erroneously messaged a few people who had edited images uploaded via the app, but were not the uploader. Apologies for the spam. :) Misaochan (talk) 11:04, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Sobre plantillas

Hola Jtcourses.

Igualmente, felices fiestas. tyk (talk) 20:23, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
