Hoi Ruigeroeland, De bestanden van ForrestryImages (of InsectImages, zelfde site) kun je uploaden in een hogere resolutie dan je deed. Dat is altijd het beste! Bedankt, Lymantria (talk) 06:33, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, please upload the highest resolution you can from forestryimages.org! Rocket000 (talk) 10:53, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Hello, I'm not sure why you keep uploading scaled down versions of these images (like File:Eupithecia fletcherata larva.jpg). Please sign up (it's easy) and start uploading the good quality versions. Thanks! Rocket000 (talk) 18:44, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Re: Images from ZooKeys

Not sure, everything's backlogged right now (not to mention that another collaboration is already in the line as soon as I finish uploading the Zookeys image). Just check it once in a while and see if there's update. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:55, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Categories

I'm always up for creating new species categories, so next time you upload files, just categorize into the (non-existent) species categories and I'll make make them for you. No need to add the genus one too. This is especially true for Lepidotera where every species is in a species category (nothing higher unless further identification isn't possible). For other organisms I sometimes just make a genus category, so it's fine for anything else. Rocket000 (talk) 00:29, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and please remember to get the highest res files from Forestry Images. Signing up really is easy. Rocket000 (talk) 00:32, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

americana

Try and figure this one out: File:Euxoa americana.JPG. I put it in Category:Scriptania americana but now I'm having doubts. I based it on a couple random books (like [1]), but then I saw the cards on LepIndex: [2] & [3] . The question is what americana Blanchard is it. The dates are confusing too. It's 1852. The 1903 is sensu Hampson, and I guess this isn't the true americana so it belongs to Agortis. What do you think? Rocket000 (talk) 00:23, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Confused

tl;dr - Don't read this unless you're in the mood to do some thinking.

Ok, you said you thought you had this figured out so hopefully you can help. I moved Gillmeria tetradactyla to Gillmeria ochrodactyla, but after reading Case 3081 for the third time, I came to the opposite conclusion you did (sorta). It is talking about the conservation of Gillmeria (or Platyptilia) ochrodactyla (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) and that the name was currently in use. In fact, they explicitly call it "the name which has always been used". What happened was it was discovered that a specimen of Phalaena tetradactyla Linnaeus, 1758 belongs to that taxon and since Linnaeus' name is older, his name should be used instead (according to the rules), however, tetradactyla was already used for 2 other species. So the proposal was to essentially suppress Linnaeus' name (which only the Commission can do, and did) and continue to use ochrodactyla. No change there. The other 2 species they say are currently known as something else. In other words, there is no tetradactyla in any genus as of now. I guess people started using tetradactyla for ochrodactyla before this thing was announced, but what we have labelled as tetradactyla could actually be something else. We have two pictures: File:Gillmeria tetradactyla.jpg and File:Platyptilia tetradactyla pupa.jpg which are either Merrifieldia tridactyla (I think what you called Platyptilia tetradactyla in the en:Gillmeria ochrodactyla article), Merrifieldia leucodactyla, or of course, Gillmeria ochrodactyla. I'm leaning towards it not being ochrodactyla because that name "has always been used" at the same time someone identified these and they for some reason didn't call it that. Also, looking at the two in that article makes me think they are different, unless that's sexual dimorphism. (Phalaena tetradactyla Linnaeus, 1758 is sometimes written as Phalaena Alucita tetradactyla causing some sites, like funet, to call it Alucita tetradactyla I suppose, there's also another date floating around, 1761, but for my sanity, I'm going to say that's just wrong...) Rocket000 (talk) 05:19, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Damn! But I am guessing you are right. I am not a native speaker (dont know if you are?) so this whole mess was terribly confusing to me. Would you mind altering the wikipedia articles too? After reading all this I still have a head thats spinning! :) Great work on all the recent uploads by the way! I am really happy that there are that many "micromoths" among these. Pictures off those are hard to find. I also made this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_moths_of_Great_Britain_%28Micromoths%29 on wikipedia. It was the only thing missing from the UK moths articles and I thought it would be nice to have seeing the recent flood of micro moth articles. Ruigeroeland (talk) 17:20, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Sure, I would update the articles, but the question remains: what are the two images we have? :) Rocket000 (talk) 23:03, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Acronicta lepusculina

Category:Acronicta lepusculina <-- Are you sure those are all the same? I didn't check for synonymy but usually you use the names from the book. I just wanta make sure you meant to call them all Acronicta lepusculina. P.S. About those articles, it's like cropping, I need to be in the mood, but I'll get to it eventually. :) Rocket000 (talk) 04:09, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes, they are the same. The book had some pictures with updated taxo (i.e. they checked some synonymity for us allready). Hey, no worries! Take your time..! Ruigeroeland (talk) 07:51, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Groet, Lymantria (talk) 06:49, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Didn't notice who uploaded the image, and that tagging for deletion sent you this automated message. I've been tagging a lot of other images you uploaded from Bugwood as under noncommercial licenses, especially those from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station Archive—these appear to have always been under noncommercial licenses. (Here's one I'm about to tag: File:Lithophane innominata.jpg.)
I've also been uploading the full resolution copies of Bugwood images—I think you have uploaded some more recently; if not, you only need to register, for free, to do so. Here are some other bits of advice: tag images with {{Licensereview}} so a trusted user can verify the license when uploading from most sites. About BOLD Systems, to get the full size images, remove the "/_w300" from the URLs; and "no rights reserved" does not imply public domain so {{Copyrighted free use}} is correct (as I've been told). —innotata 22:01, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, In the early days I was under the impression that non commercial was ok for wikipedia, I have since learned it is not. I uploaded tons of Bugwood images last year, but registered for those, as someone else pointed out you could upload better quality images that way. Older ones might be of lesser quality still. Thanks for cleaning them up. I will use your tips from now one if I dont forget. Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 23:08, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Could you precise the name of the creator. Thanks.--Pixeltoo (talk) 12:18, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

I have no idea, sorry. Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:47, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
You can't declare {{PD-Old}} for any work if you don't know precisely the author and the year of his/her death. It's quite plausible that the person who published his work in 1910 died after 1941. If you don't want your files being deleted and account blocked you have to “waste” some time looking for biographies of their creators. Mithril (talk) 20:18, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Red categories

Hallo! Looking through you contributions I found that you have used more than 150 red categories in the last 20 days. Please either put files into existing categories of higher level or create these categories. Being put into red categories these files cannot be seen by users who are interested in categorization of biological images. Mithril (talk) 22:06, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mithril, I use the species as a cat on request of another user when I just started out uploading files on commons, but a quick look at that users activity shows he or she is no longer active. I think back in the day he would find my uploads and create the cats afterwards. I would gladly add higher level cats if this is preferred. Is it okay if I put them in the family cat so others can catch them? I am mainly working on wikipedia and only use commons to upload images for use on wikipedia. I dont really feel like spending too much time on creating a Tree of Life here on commons next to writing the articles. I understand others mainly work on commons and would like to keep things tidy over here. Just tell me what type of cat works best and I will use that in future. Ruigeroeland (talk) 08:53, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, “blue” categories of family or genus level are always better than “red” categories of any level. However turning “red” category into “blue” one takes several seconds. Mithril (talk) 09:24, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Ah, yes, that is indeed quite easy. I will make the cats in this manner from now on. Thanks! Ruigeroeland (talk) 10:46, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Always welcome. Templates {{Extracted}}, {{Extracted from}} and {{C}} can be useful also while you're extracting parts of plates. See for instance File:NovitatesZoologicae18_Pl03.png, File:Palaeomolis palmeri.JPG and their history of edits. Mithril (talk) 11:49, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Flickr foto'tjes

Groet. Ruigeroeland (talk) 16:46, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes I'll add the names and categories. The text is available at Biodiversity Heritage Library (perhaps Internet Archive) but if you look back at the plates you will see the names there (not all are species or accepted now but usually on FuNet).I kept hoping Fauna Africana would appear on the web but I am enjoying renewing my acquaintance with this wonderful work. potentially major problems with your Hampson files

Hi. I have noticed, on some of your uploads of Hampson's plates, that for some reason you switched the captions on the plates. I cannot tell how often you made this mistake but I found at least one example, and it alone seriously compromises a fair number of images (19 of them), with potentially disastrous results, as all of those mis-named images are being linked to by a variety of Wikipedia pages, in multiple languages. This image [19] is definitely Plate CCVIII, and figures 3, 4, 8, and 9 are Speiredonia species, while the remaining figures are Enmonodia. The text that you have pasted, which is theoretcially supposed to correspond to this plate, lists figures 1, 4, 5, 6, and 9 as Cyligramma!!! This text appears to be the captions from plate CCIX [20]. Plate CCIX has Cyligramma in figures 1, 4, 5, 6, and 9, and the corresponding captions you list have Speiredonia as figures 3, 4, 8, and 9 - indicating that somehow you switched the captions on these two plates! As a result, ALL of the extracted files you created are of the wrong taxa, for both plates. I respectfully request that you fix the images associated with these plates, delete the extracted files you created that had the wrong names, and post new files of the plates with the captions that actually go with them, and make new extracted files that can replace the deleted files. Hopefully you did not make this mistake elsewhere! Dyanega (talk) 17:49, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

The second does show the image, but without licence. The first had the image with licence, but it has dissappeared. It WAS there when I uploaded it. If you search on BOLD Systems you will see that images by 'Unspecified, University of British Columbia' are all licenced under a CreativeCommons - Attribution licence. I cannot prove the licence for this one anymore, but I cannot help it that it took this long for someone to review the licence. Ruigeroeland (talk) 13:37, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Orthomecyna exigua.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:Eupithecia lafontaineata.JPG

File:Eupithecia lafontaineata.JPG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page.

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

File:Automeris celata.JPG

File:Automeris celata.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
