You can forward the permission to info-el@wikipedia.org. There are some Greek sitting there :) Meanwhile, I have undeleted the image. Hello, FocalPoint!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 AnnouncementEdit

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!Edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,

Read the Commons:File renaming site, especially the section Which files should not be renamed?, please. There is told for Criterion #4: Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set. There are two scenarios that this criterion is designed for: 1) for templates and 2) for sister project, especially wikisources. Other cases should be declined.

It is good to observe the Commons:File renaming/Recently declined rename requests page: you can learn, how it works in practice.

Besides of it: each new user tries to perform a new, his own system of harmonization for USRR coins. And their rule is: >>My system is "better" only because it is "mine"<<, I'm afraid :(

Have a nice day :-) Wieralee (talk) 13:39, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Wieralee, I appreciate your input - I was a bit worried and I certainly understand the "my version is better" concept (hm hm ...). I will keep an eye on the declined requests for training. Good idea, thank you! --FocalPoint (talk) 13:44, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi misters Wieralee and FocalPoint! Sorry for invasion but I have to speak about it. You must see this categories: Category:Commemorative coins of Georgia, Category:Commemorative coins of Armenia, Category:Commemorative coins of Tajikistan, Category:Commemorative coins of Kyrgyzstan, Category:Commemorative coins of Uzbekistan... they are several similar systems of harmonization here, and they weren't concept by me. Please check the categories Category:Commemorative coins of the Soviet Union, 1960s, Category:Commemorative coins of the Soviet Union, 1970s, Category:Commemorative coins of the Soviet Union, 1980s, Category:Commemorative coins of the Soviet Union, 1990s, and you must understand that is no harmonization.
That's no mine. I would not like translate the files to my native language (Armenian), I would like to find standard for the articles by theme for all wikies (English, Russian, Ukrainian, and new created Armenian and Greek). I only upload a good quality image ang correct ашду вescription. I am not a vandal, all numizmat-moderators of Russian and Armenian wikies known me as competent editor.
I am waiting for your response, thanks in advance!!! Vahe (talk) 20:14, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
P.S. And sorry for my English, I must say the think in Russian if you can understand. Vahe (talk) 20:23, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • @Vahe: we don't like to rename files for poor reasons, because it is not a safe operation. We have a bug on Commons --- some files had disappeared after renaming... Each time I'm renaming a file, -- I'm afraid if it will be succesful. Renaming files is not safe for them. It is easy when rename is managed by the original uploader => he has this file on his computer. But when somebody wants to rename only because "it looks better" => it is not good. And what can I tell to an original uploader when he will ask me, why I had renamed it? and why I had lost it?
Our browser searches both: in names -- and in descriptions of the files, so it is not necessary to rename files. It is enough to write what you want in the description. Shortcuts are also not welcome - people do not write into a browser "Vahe's shortcuts", but usual words... Wieralee (talk) 20:35, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • @Wieralee: I understood the first part of the answer․ But I do not agree about the last sentence. I did this not guided, it is not important for me to get around to know about my uploads. There is a caveat. None of the uploaders is not the author of this picture. All rights belong to the State Bank of the USSR and the assignee of the Bank of Russia. Nobody will not ask you why you had lost the image. Anyway, I will begin to upload images as new files, to avoid conflict. Anyway, sooner or later, all unused files of poor quality will insert removal. Good luck! Vahe (talk) 21:02, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • @Vahe: I had such situations twice: and the uploaders were angry and not pleased at all :( I can only not-to-decline, but I will not rename such files. I think an option 'new files with better quality' is more safe solution. Good luck! :-) Wieralee (talk) 21:14, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Renaming of No 51 The 'Hog Back' at Ellis, Kansas (Sportsmen).pngEdit

The proposed renaming of

File:No 51 The 'Hog Back' at Ellis, Kansas (Sportsmen).png

to

File:No. 51. The 'Hog Back' at Ellis, Kansas (Sportsmen).png

was simply to have the detailed high-resolution cropped (Sportsmen) file line up next to the full file, namely

File:No. 51. The 'Hog Back' at Ellis, Kansas. (7008429651).jpg

when the [[Category:On the Kansas Pacific Railway]] gallery is displayed.
With the periods missing, the file appears out of order in the gallery. If I can with help make the renaming comply with renaming guidelines, I would be appreciative. At this point, #51 is the only one I have a high-res crop for, but I might do that for a few others, e.g., #41. IveGoneAway (talk) 00:16, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!Edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear FocalPoint,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Change language when renamingEdit

About this renaming please see Commons:File renaming#Which files should not be renamed?: #2 Commons is a multilingual project. --sasha (krassotkin) 07:11, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

  • User:Krassotkin, my criterion was as follows: Would I approve the change from the previous text to the new text (irrespective of language)? The answer is yes. The previous name had repetitions. --FocalPoint (talk) 07:21, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
    • We have to take language into account when renaming. This is a clear and unambiguous rule. --sasha (krassotkin) 07:24, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
      • User:Krassotkin, the rule clearly and unambiguously rules the files should not be renamed "...only because the filename is not English". I believe that the new name was improved, not because of the language, but because of the removal of repetitions. You are free to disagree, but as far as I am concerned, I know that I did not approve the renaming "only because the filename was not English". You are certainly welcome to move it back, if you think that the previous name was better. --FocalPoint (talk) 07:31, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
        • There was no repetitions. Initially, the name was in two languages. --sasha (krassotkin) 07:40, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
          • Oh... lack of knowledge - I assumed it was written in two difference character sets - thank you sasha. --FocalPoint (talk) 07:45, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

And about harmonization (example): Commons:File_renaming#cite_note-4. --sasha (krassotkin) 07:40, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

I'm not here to cancel something. Please just consider these rules in the future. Thanks for your work! --sasha (krassotkin) 07:40, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your feedback. --FocalPoint (talk) 07:45, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

There is also Commons:Wiki Science Competition 2017 awaiting a translation. It is more a formality, our uploaders are researchers so they should understand English.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:02, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi,Edit

I don't quite understand why you denied the rename request here, and on others in Category:Rachel's Tomb. Rachel's Tomb is clearly on the West bank, not even the Israeli government claims that it is in Israel, So why do we let commons claim it? --Huldra (talk) 20:03, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Huldra, I believe that this issue is within Commons:Project scope/Neutral point of view. If I am wrong, I am sorry, I am sure that another filemover or admin will do the right thing. --FocalPoint (talk) 23:34, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

No, this is not contested, not even the Israeli government say that it is in Israel. Calling it by this name, is...well, like saying a building in Category:Alsace, is in Alsace, Germany...when every single state on the planet say that it is in Alsace, France. If you do not want to correct this, who will? --Huldra (talk) 20:09, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

I respect your position, however, I believe that my lack of experience and knowledge on the subject is such that I am sure that another person among the 1,266 file movers and 235 administrators will be more adequate to assess whether make the move is exactly as you present it. --FocalPoint (talk) 20:27, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello FocalPoint, I'm trying to change File:MohamedOmar2018.jpg to File:MohamedOmar.jpg but can't do the change as File:MohamedOmar.jpg has a redirection. Could you help me by removing that redirection to make the change? Please note that both files are my own work. Thank you so much.

File:Raja Ravi Varma, Reclining Woman.jpgEdit

I would like an explanation on why you declined the rename request for File:Raja Ravi Varma, Reclining Woman.jpg. The commons renaming guidelines say that anything specific that is incorrectly named can be renamed. They literally gave the example about the Mona Lisa being renamed from Louvre 12, because it was incorrectly named for a specific painting, and this was the exact same situation. I am not sure if you are aware, but paintings have specific names (i.e they are not to be named by descriptors). I had given a link to a book which had shown the same painting with a caption giving the renamed title I had requested; in case you needed proof. I apologize if I sound condescending but this was a mistake, and it would be awesome if you could look at it again. I need it to write an article and it would be great if I had the proper name for the painting. BreadBuddy (talk) 15:52, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

To clarify, I mean the last example on criteria 2 is why this painting would surely qualify for renaming.BreadBuddy (talk) 15:54, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

BreadBuddy my proposal is to write down the correct things at the text of the image first. Then modify the title. The previous one also had the name of the painter and I really do not see why it should be removed. So, do not give up. Use the feedback and proceed. --FocalPoint (talk) 16:11, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

FocalPoint Thank you, so I'll go ahead and do that now. What course of action do you suggest next for the renaming? BreadBuddy (talk) 17:19, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Do as you think best - do not worry, things will sort themselves out on their own. --FocalPoint (talk) 17:26, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

rename requestEdit

Perhaps you might tell me why my request to rename the file does not comply with the requirements? Every file I have uploaded has the same naming convention, except that one, please explain your rational. --Don (talk) 18:54, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Don, the proposed change is not sifnificant in my opinion, specially since the author is clearly noted in the summary. Fell free to propose it again - this is nothing critical. --FocalPoint (talk) 07:06, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

File:Sinasos Church of Saint John.jpgEdit

Would you have happened to archive the facebook page that contains the permission anywhere? I was going through the license review queue and this one has been in there for quite some time. Unfortunately, the link is dead so I can't verify the information. I found the photo on Facebook but there is no indication of a license on it. --Majora (talk) 22:31, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Majora, I uploaded the photo following the request of the Facebook account holder, who at the time did not manage to understand how to upload images himself. I have forwarded his email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and I even have a reply from info-el@wikimedia.org . Apparently, the person from the permissions team failed to put up an OTRS ticket. IF you have access, look at the emails, this one is dated 28.10.2013 10:37 . Furthermore, I am copying this communication to the discussion of the file as a reference. --FocalPoint (talk) 05:48, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Sinasos Church of Saint John.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, and Commons:Permission if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Sinasos Church of Saint John.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:Borrar-archivo-porfavor.jpgEdit

Hi, I don't think such a renaming should take place, even at uploader request. Are you aware that you renamed the file to "delete file please" in Spanish? Jcb (talk) 00:44, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello User:Jcb, you are right. I did not check the translation. Maybe the person wants to delete it. I will ask. --FocalPoint (talk) 16:30, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

I asked. --FocalPoint (talk) 16:39, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Please be aware that 'author request' is only a valid reason for deletion within 7 days after upload. In principle, contributions cannot be revoked. We only make an exception for that if the file is uploaded less than 7 days ago. Jcb (talk) 17:05, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Johan, you are right again, but I would bend this rule for the unused photo of a person, if the request was coming from himself. --FocalPoint (talk) 18:34, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Yes, that can be a valid reason for deletion. Out of scope files can be deleted and speedy-reason File 10 may apply. Jcb (talk) 23:07, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Greek FlagsEdit

Thank you focal point for your suggestion. All the designs are vectorised by and already two municipalities contacted me to thank me for the designs cause now they didn't have to pay someone to vectorize them. In Greece there are two main differences. First is that most of those designs are not official and thus nobody can claim real ownership of the design. The thing is that most of them use designs very simple or very old like the flag of Nafpactos which depicts a coin. Also there are many variations and in my designs I make a new "average" flag combining most features. The second thing is that in Greece there no law that makes Flags and insignias free to upload but that's because it's self-evident. Many of municipalities even have taken my designs from Wikipedia and put them into there websites or street signs because Wikipedia offered a standard for the designs. See for example the web site of the President of the Hellenic Republic which took the coat of arms from Wikipedia as did many ministries http://www.presidency.gr/proedria/ To sum up, it's unclear to who the flags belong to and no one ever had a problem with that, not even the officials who praised me for my offer and even used the flags in their websites and in real life. I went to Aegina saw that they used my flag design and I understood that because I had forgotten to add a small feature. When I contacted the one who printed the flag, he thanked me for giving him such a big gallery of flags. I believe that the only one who can claim ownership of the flags is me because I am the one who did the research and spent many hours trying to vectorize them. Thus,I believe they should stay as they are. Off course some of the flags used logos like the Palaio Faliro one and those should be and were deleted correctly.(TakisA1 (talk) 15:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC))
