Transylvania - Transylvania is a historical region in present-day esetern and central Romania. Since after World War I, Transylvania often refers to all territories that were part of Hungary before 1920, that is, including Crişana, Maramureş, and Banat besides Transylvania proper. This article deals with all these territories. The population of Transylvania has an overall Romanian majority of 75% and has a large, 20% Hungarian community who constitute the majority in Székely Land (Szekler Land) in the East and along the border to Hungary in the West.
In its early history, the area belonged to a variety of empires and states, including Dacia, the Roman Empire, the Hun Empire and the Gepid Kingdom. In the early 11th century, Transylvania became part of Hungary. It became a semi-independent principality during the Ottoman conquest in Hungary, was later reunified with Hungary and after World War I, it was attached to Romania in 1920 along with other historical regions. Northern Transylvania briefly reunified with Hungary between 1940-1944.
