Hello, Gbawden!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Genl George Meiring.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Genl George Meiring.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:SA Army E4 rank insignia.jpg edit

File:SA Army E4 rank insignia.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi Gbawden, the date-entry in the description template is for the date of the work, not for the date of the upload (which is recorded anyway in the upload log). Duplicates edit

If you are going to do a DR for a duplicate, such as Commons:Deletion requests/File:Dr. Pathrose Parathuvayalil MD(Ay).jpg, it would helpful if you linked both files, as most Admins will want to look at both.

There is also the Duplicate tag which is actually a little slower for Admins, but which you may find useful.

Please ensure that in every case if one file is in use, that you nominate the other one. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:23, 7 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Enough edit

We've left enough messages on your talk page which tell you to provide better sourcing and licensing. I now see you've uploaded a whole bevy of images from English Wikipedia which were created by the US military and which you sloppily placed the Own tag on as the source, while omitting the real source which was present on English Wikipedia. Please provide a better sourcing to your images. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:34, 23 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Whats the point of marking these files for transfer to commons on wikipedia if they don't meet the commons criteria in the first place? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gbawden (talk • contribs) 06:29, January 24, 2014‎ (UTC)
They do meet Commons' criteria. It's just that you chose the option on the bot to state that they were "own work", when they were not "own work" by the uploader - they were clearly created by a third party. I admit I didn't respond very well - I probably should have tutored you. Still, could you please go through those images and fix the source information? If you do that, they will no longer have to be deleted. Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:19, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Here is an example of how to fix it: basically just move the source information into the source field.[2] Let me know if you have any other questions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:30, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I thought that ForTheCommonGood automatically copied over that information. What do I do in the case where no author or source information is provided by the original uploader on Wikipedia? Thanks. Graham Gbawden (talk) 06:51, 27 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Take this case for example. You would move all of the above information into the source field. Unless the original uploader is also the author, that means you always remove the Own tag (as you'll notice it states there in the comment change this if not own work). If the original upload doesn't provide a source at all, then you would still remove the own tag and replace it with nothing (in this case, the image might get deleted from Commons as some point regardless of whether you remove the own tag, because the original uploader at Wikipedia failed to provide sufficient source information). Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement edit

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Dear Gbawden,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. 2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
 3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

A request edit

In this edit you advised me you had opened Commons:Categories for discussion/2014/03/Category:Curtis M. Scaparrotti. I'd like to know what your justification was, but this discussion had been deleted.

I voiced my concerns over that deletion at User talk:Denniss.

I wrote there that, IMO, contributors like you should not remove elements from existing categories -- since that can trigger their premature deletion. Instead, I think the discussion should run its course, and the elements only moved if the discussion's consensus aligns with choosing the new category.

So, I am going to request you that, in future, you simply initiate the discussion, and not move elements from the existing category to the new category -- unless the discussion's consensus aligns with your opinion.

Thanks Geo Swan (talk) 21:32, 28 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

But it's not written anywhere they are in the Musée des beaux-arts et d'archéologie de Vienne (Fine Arts and archaeology museum in Vienne (France)). How do you know ? Is this a mistake ? File:120705-N-VF350-005 ear Admiral Ron Lloyd, Royal Canadian Navy, speaks with chaplains).jpg edit

For future reference, when a Flickr image has an obviously incorrect tag, don't bother adding Flickrreview; the bot will only read the license tag and mark it for deletion. Instead, just add Category:Flickr images needing human review directly and include a small note (in <!-- --> tags, perhaps) explaining to the reviewer why bot review wouldn't work. I found this image while deleting pages that failed review, and this one was included because the bot didn't understand that US Navy pictures are PD-USGov. I've removed the bot's deletion request and replaced it with a review notice that confirms your tag. Nyttend (talk) 23:06, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, and if you wouldn't have used the template when uploading manually, you shouldn't hesitate to remove it when uploading with a tool. Nyttend (talk) 13:09, 6 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gbawden, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Your VFC installation method is deprecated edit

Hello Gbawden, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Hello,

I am dealing with an OTRS ticket about this file that you marked in March as being Sergio Montesino's work. Where have you found this information? Thank you --Ruthven (msg) 12:08, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

 • @Ruthven: I think i summarily tagged all this users uploads after finding one or two that were taken from the internet hence how I found the authors name. This was a batch edit and I worked on the premise that if there was an issue with one there was an issue with all, given that they were the only upload by this user. Gbawden (talk) 12:42, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I arrived at the same conclusion after undeleting another file that was taken with a different camera and has a source on the web. I havent' found any Sergio Montesino as original author, but I asked for some explaination via OTRS. Cheers, Ruthven (msg) 13:03, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Gbawden, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

File:TnT PoS Westmoorings 1.jpg edit

Hi Gbawden, hi Wdwd,
I noticed a few edits around file File:TnT PoS Westmoorings 1.jpg which I had asked to be deleted in this deletion request. I am aware that the "new" picture has a lower resolution than the "old" one, which is due to my limited software tools. The reason why I had asked to delete the "old" file was that I had corrected the horizon in the "new" file. Now the "new" file is deleted, and the "old" one still has its tilted horizon. Might be Commons policy, might be wrong, I don't know, just wanted to mention the reason behind my deletion request.
Kind regards, Grueslayer (talk) 11:14, 14 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Grueslayer: Hi. I might have screwed up on that one. To be safe I kept the file and then tagged it as a Duplicate. As I pointed out it was a better image than the other and Wdwd seems to have agreed as he has kept this one and redirected the other. You could re-upload the new horizon image to the same file name by clicking upload a new version under file history. Hope that helps Gbawden (talk) 11:19, 14 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

After that - if there is no disagreement or criticism - it can be deleted by an administrator. I had also linked this deletion request here: Commons:WikiProject Chemistry/Deletion requests. Please don´t assume anything to me! Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 13:38, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

FBMD edit

Hi. Closing admin question: File:Jessica may.jpg just passed Flickr review. It has FBMD at MD. How do we separate files to delete or not as regards "FBMD at MD"? Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 17:44, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@E4024: I saw a post about FMDB saying that its not always accurate (will look for it) and there is something else to look for. In this case it passed flickr review - maybe a case of flickrwashing? I don't recall the DR for this one10:36, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I wanted to take an opinion before making a cat for her but got bored of waiting and made it. Now let us leave her alone some time. :) --E4024 (talk) 12:23, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@E4024: The Flickr user just signed up. Keep in mind the reviews are approved by a bot, so the reviews is not always accurate to recognize Flickrwashing. -- 1989 (talk) 21:42, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
You see, I told you I do not have the dough (a Turkish saying) to be an admin; but you have not read my mail yet. (You did not take the "message" in my previous talk either. :) --E4024 (talk) 21:46, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Lacking in specific skill doesn’t mean you’re not fit to be one. I’m aware of your situation, I’ve read it all. -- 1989 (talk) 21:55, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

File:Un F-16 pakistaní derriba un MiG-23 soviético.jpg appears to be a re-upload of a file which you deleted [Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Byfrosts venezolano here]. If it is a re-upload, you may want to take action.Nigel Ish (talk) 16:26, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Nigel Ish: Done! Thanks Gbawden (talk) 06:12, 4 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gbawden, can you please check this Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ampiroxicam 3D black ball.png, I think the file can be deleted now after 7 days! Thanks, Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 18:48, 4 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

File talk:Karl Nehammer.jpg edit

I don't think this fall under COM:CSD#8, because this was a discussion, that was linked, to understand the case, so it isn't an orphan page. Habitator terrae 🌍 10:42, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Habitator terrae: I take your point that discussions took place there but when the original file was deleted the deletion "orphaned" the talk page and you can't have a talk page without a file so you have to delete the talk page too Gbawden (talk) 10:49, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

blue1310.com edit

Hi Gbawden, I've taken the liberty to remove your copyvio-tag from some images with a blue1310.com watermark, as the legal code of blue1310.com mentions "Jean-Sébastien Touchet" as author/owner. I hope that's ok for you. As the uploading account-name is "Touchet Jean-Sébastien", it's rather likely that they are the same person. --Túrelio (talk) 11:56, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Undelete please edit

An OTRS ticket has arrived for File:Hendrik_Jan_L_Ankersmit_2019.jpg. Can you please restore it so I can verify the image? Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 16:07, 4 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Ww2censor: . Done. Might be best to post on COM:UDR next time Gbawden (talk) 06:10, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I normally ask the deleting admin to restore their own deletions instead of cluttering up COM:UDR with uncontroversial requests. You are the first to make that suggestion. Do you think that would be a quicker way to go? Ww2censor (talk) 12:00, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Ww2censor: You are welcome to ping me but if I don't respond in time UDR might be quicker Gbawden (talk) 07:23, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Omshivaprakash: The person who took the photo must upload it to Commons and release it under a free license - please read COM:L. In this case there was enough doubt about the provenance of this image to justify deletion under the precautionary principle Gbawden (talk) 05:59, 15 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Apollo by Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini Mauritshuis 1135.jpg edit

Please, before replacing or deleting files, verify information of new files. In this case were lost translations of title and infos about medium, dimensions and institution. This is are more important than number of pixels!!!--Zanekost (talk) 18:33, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Zanekost: I don't recall the image you are referring to but it is likely I processed a duplicate which was tagged by another user. If this is the case simply upload a higher quality version. All my edits are done in good faith Gbawden (talk) 08:10, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have seen that you had restored the file and then it has been deleted again. I insist that it´s an image of the 'multimedia files' of the Government of La Rioja, which as you can see in the link I have provided before, has a license CC4.0. I undeleted to check what made me delete the file in the first place and I undeleted it again, pending a decision by a non involved editor here Gbawden (talk) 12:57, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Gbawden: I suppose it was an error of mine not to refer to the main source of the multimedia file repository web but to another page web, giving an interpretation error. I hope it is resolved soon. Thank you. regards
@Wikitcher: As you will see I commented on your Undeletion request - best to let someone else review and make the final undeletion decision Gbawden (talk) 13:06, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
