To 84user edit

Hello 84user, I'm not sure if this is the correct way to contact you, but I wasn't sure how else to do so. Anyway, I was impressed with your graph 'Oil consumption per day by region from 1980 to 2006' and felt it would benefit from being updated with some more recent data. Kind regards, SW1

Many thanks for the useful response. I hope to get around to it this weekend. SW1

Thanks edit

Hey, Thanks for all your help, I am don't understand how you did it at all, but that is because I am new to vector graphics. Hey, one more thing, you see how you originally had the text, can you put it back to that size? Thanks agian!

P.S. - What is a TUSC acount? Bugboy52.40 (talk) 01:04, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I changed the text font size to 16, the closest I could find to the original 17.2
I'm pretty new to SVG too. All I did was right-click on each object and select "Fill and Stroke" and then click on Edit under the Fill - Radial Gradient tab, and then some trial and error changes.
I have forgotten what I got the TUSC account for! I think I needed it to help move my images from my English wikipedia account to Commons. I recall using some tool but it was more work than just moving images manually. 84user (talk) 01:49, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Live Larsdatter edit

Regarding this edit, I am a bit at a loss what to think of it. I am well aware that the claim of the age of the person is very dubious, but I would think that that fact is for any relevant article on the matter to state. In the description I am only stating what the painting itself states (the "birth certificate" of the woman is shown in the picture on the wall behind her, which was the only reason why this painting was commissioned in the first place), and what the museum has written concerning this paining. I have stated the source of the painting, and following the Museums Home Page, choosing "Online Catalogue" and writing "larsdatter, live" in the "Person på maleri: (efternavn, fornavn)" will provide the exact same information. But it is not exactly something that is transferable to a citation (and I do not think that I have seen any in-text citations (<ref> type citations) in Commons either).--Saddhiyama (talk) 13:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Theora video questions edit

Hey, I noticed you made some edits to Help:Converting video. I've been working on a more general video help page that focuses on everything video-related on Commons. It is temporarily located at user:Mahanga/sandbox. Do you have any suggestions? Feel free to make changes and to rearrange sections.

Second question: Do you know of an easy way to convert OGV to an animated gif? Thanksmahanga (talk) 21:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

please use Category:Ogg_video edit

Hi, please use Category:Ogg_video instead of Category:OGV_files there should only be one category for Ogg videos.

Both of those categories are now redirects to Category:Videos. 84user, for new video uploads, can you categorize them their or one of its subcategories. Thanks. mahanga (talk) 00:44, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

That automatic webcam image has this template:

This file is in the public domain because a "surveillance video lacks sufficient originality, it is not subject to copyright", see pages 4 and 5 from http://turtletalk.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/flyingman-motion-for-summary-judgment.pdf

This template must not be used to dedicate an uploader's own work to the public domain; CC0 should be used instead.

This work must carry justifications for free usability in both the United States and its country of origin.
That was added on the basis of a Commons talk:Licensing discussion, now archived at:
Commons talk:Licensing/Archive 22#Live feeds.
The phrase because the surveillance video lacks sufficient originality, it is not subject to copyright appears between lines 8 and 11 on page 3 under Motion for Summary Judgement of the PDF linked above. The judgement continues on page 4 between lines 6 with First, the surveillance videotape, which simply records objective events that are factual in nature, is not "copyrightable". The only possible act of creativity would be myself in choosing that particular webcam capture out of the several available: the site automatically captures what the webcam sees once an hour and makes them available to the public. I looked for one that was captured as early as possible with no people present. I do not think that merits any creativity on my part. If there is still a probem with these kinds of ineligible image, maybe we need to create a specific template instead of using the general purpose PD-because. -84user (talk) 20:54, 28 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Elephants Dream 1024.avi.w400vbr180abr48c2two-pass.ogv edit

Hi 84user, you uploaded File:Elephants Dream 1024.avi.w400vbr180abr48c2two-pass.ogv and created new .srt files for it. They seem to be identical to the ones on File:Elephants Dream.ogg (which is meaningful, as it's the same film ;-) ). Wouldn't it be better to store them only once to avoid redundancy? I added a new parameter to Closed captions that allows a different file as base for the closed captioning.

Closed captions are available for this media file.

Click on the CC button in the toolbar of the media player to display or hide them. Create a new translation via the form below.

Replace the en part with your language code and press the Go button.

Or is there any other reason to store the files twice? --Slomox (talk) 20:52, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is of course better to store them once, but until recently I was not aware of any other way to associate closed captions with video files. Earlier today I used Redirect to avoid duplicated content, for example TimedText:Elephants Dream (high quality).ogv.pt.srt redirects to the existing TimedText:Elephants Dream.ogg.pt.srt. I did that to cause the closed captions template to display the correct file name of the caption files (this could be important with movie clips). The new closed captions parameter appears to be a good alternative but it might cause confusion with reusers.
I still think more support is needed for the Timed Text function; I see User:mahanga has posted about this at Commons:Usability issues and ideas#Download link for Timed Text subtitles. I have started Commons:Timed Text to centralize all the possibilities. -84user (talk) 23:20, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Implementing a download link could be possible if we placed something like: (untested, but should work) into MediaWiki:Sitenotice. Clicking the resulting link will give you the possibility to download the source text of the current page as text file: download source. However, the file will be named "subtitles" by default. That's the part between the "/" and the "?" in the URL. We can set this string to any value we like, as long as it doesn't contain dots (that's prohibited by the software cause it allows malicious users to give the files executable file formats). But without dots we cannot provide the wanted filename "XXX.ogg.srt". So a fully functional download link is impossible with current MediaWiki software. --Slomox (talk) 02:39, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's very interesting. This could be useful even without the dot. It needs some thought on how to make user instructions international and for multi-operating-systems, but here is a possible download link for Krazy Kat German captions, tailored for an English user of Windows and VLC, which appears to require a ".srt" with dot.
Click your right mouse button and select "Save this link as" and replace the REPLACETHISWITHDOT with a dot (.)

Category:Goldschläger edit

Hi 84user!

Why do you use a german expression for the category "Goldschläger" and not an englisch one?

regards, fcm. --Frank C. Müller (talk) 11:55, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I chose Goldschläger because nearly all the Commons images on goldbeating are findable with that word. I see that Commons:Naming categories is a proposed guideline to use English names, with exceptions, so I have now created Category:Goldbeating and put a Seecat in Category:Goldschläger. Goldbeating seems to include a wider set of images that just Goldbeaters. Ideally bugzilla:5638 will be fixed so that non-English readers will see the name in their preferred language. Do you have any better suggestions? -84user (talk) 11:39, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Convert to ogv edit

Hello,

Thank you for your tutorial. Can you tell me what is wrong in my conversion File:GouguAnim.gif to File:GouguAnim.ogv ? Please, use simple english because I'm french. Thanks. HB (talk) 12:11, 18 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

There is nothing wrong with your conversion. The file you uploaded is a correct OGG video and it plays 100% correctly. The problem is wikimedia has a thumbnail bug, see bugzilla:23160 "Theora video thumbnails corrupt", that may prevent the correct display of video thumbnails. If you see a blank or corrupt thumbnail after uploading an OGG video, do not panic, the video file is probably 100% correct. You can confirm the OGG video is correct by (1) clicking the link under the play button and watching the browser play the file, and (2) downloading it to your computer and playing it in Media Player Classic. -84user (talk) 12:39, 18 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Video format - WebM edit

Hey, just wanted to let you know about a new free video format called WebM sponsored by Google and supported by Mozilla and Opera.

Leave comments at the the village pump. MahangaTalk 21:22, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

It seemed too off-topic to post at the Village Pump. When you transcoded the video, were you able to play it in one of the webm enabled browsers? If not, then there was somethign wrong in the encoding process. If it does work, try a HD video to convert. I'm pretty sure it's only HD WebM video on YouTube (for the time being).[2] MahangaTalk 17:40, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I should have read http://techlogg.com/2010/05/youtube-to-convert-720p-1080p-video-to-new-webm/428 first. I have been testing with small quick to transcode videos. I must also follow this blog link you posted. Also I must try the trick of uploading a H264 to YT and letting them do the hard work!
The Chromium browser build 47798 correctly played the silent vdubtest.mkv (created using WebM DirectShow filters in GraphEdit, the file writer refused ".webm" as extension so I had to use ".mkv") but only when I renamed it to vdubtest.mkv.webm. Chromium otherwise tries to download any ".mkv" files regardless of actual type. If I feed Chromium a real ".mkv" renamed to ".webm" (H264 and vorbis for example), it just renders an empty non-functioning video player. I cannot get the Labs Opera build to run any local file inside in player on a page; it does nothing or offers to download it, depending on the extension. I also tested these browsers with a video transcoded by Sorenson Squish online convertor with the same result: Chromium only plays a "real" webm video if its extension is ".webm". So far Sorenson is working on about a half of the test videos I feed it, but it fails on all OGG Theora videos. -84user (talk) 19:51, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the extension must be .webm as that's what's laid out in the specs. Also, this blog has links to the ffmpeg executables for you to easily convert video (like using ffmpeg2theora). It provides sample files to download. You can try using a Firefox WebM build to test it on too. Can you test converting Theora videos to WebM using the ffmpeg executables in the blog I linked and see if it works? MahangaTalk 21:50, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, that windows binary is exactly what I was looking for; it wasn't there when I first looked. That ffmpeg+webm mingw32 build worked fine on several test inputs and the outputs all play in Chromium just like OGG videos play in Firefox. Because I do not read manuals it took me a long time to figure out what "Current FFmpeg Vorbis encoder only supports 2 channels" meant: it required the option "-ac 2" even if the input had only 1 audio channel. An example to remind me later:
ffmpeg.exe -i test.avi -b 50k -aq 30 -threads 2 -ab 32k -aq 60 -ac 2 testaviac2.webm
-84user (talk) 01:18, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Correct usage is '-acodec libvorbis'. ffmpeg default's to the ffvorbis encoder which doesn't support 1 channel audio + it gives very inferior audio at any bitrate.
There's also the Flix WebM program which is a free GUI that can convert, but I haven't had much luck with it on Theora videos. MahangaTalk 13:37, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Heh, sorry to spam your talk page, but here's one last bit of info. VLC with WebM support. Mahanga (Talk) 15:49, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
This is the good kind of Spam. To avoid abusing Commons pages on non-Commons topics (although hopefully they will eventually accept WebM format here) I have started making WebM notes on my offtopic blog. I am still experimenting so nothing there is definitely 100% accurate. The Flix WebM program is fine as far as it goes but (a) it makes non-optimal changes, and (b) it crashes with both FLV and Theora OGG input. The ffmpeg.exe does not have these problems, but it can be complex to use. I also downloaded the VLC 1.1 and it plays WebM better than Media Player Classic, but not as well as the Chromium build. I now find that YouTube accepts Theora OGG uploads! When did that happen? Curiously YT rendered this Big Buck Bunny 1080p Theora upload as this with a choice of 4 sizes inside a Flash player, but this WebM 1080p with only 360 and 720, but inside a HTML5 player. YT's logic for deciding how to render baffles me. -84user (talk) 04:15, 22 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Email to Hubblesite edit

This is a copy of my email to copyright@stsci.edu asking for clarification on their copyright statement. I have anonymised my email address, but it is the same address I used to register at Wikimedia, and messages sent to "Email this user" will reach me the same way.

Subject: request clarification on Guidelines Regarding the Use or Reproduction

Dear Hubble Site (Space Telescope Science Institute),

could you please clarify my understanding of the "Guidelines Regarding the Use or Reproduction of NASA Material Obtained From a JSC Web Pages" at http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/policies.html#Guidelines ?

I am asking this for both my own curiosity and in order to help clarify the matter at Wikimedia Commons, where NASA images are often uploaded and assigned a public domain status.

Paragraph 8 at

has:

8. NASA material is not protected by copyright unless noted. If copyrighted, permission should be obtained from the copyright owner prior to use. If not copyrighted, NASA material may be reproduced and distributed without further permission from NASA.

How can I re-user determine when an image is "noted"? Does the presence of a third party in the credit line indicate the image is copyrighted by that third-party? I have always assumed yes, but I would appreciate a confirmation.

There is a similar paragraph at http://hubblesite.org/about_us/copyright.php

"However, for credit lines listing individuals from other institutions, you will need to contact that institution listed in the credit line to advise you on the copyright policy for that image."

An actual example of such an image is the Pluto map at

http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2010/06/image/a/

The credit line is

"Credit: NASA, ESA, and M. Buie (Southwest Research Institute)"

Does this indicate that a re-user of this image would require permission from "M. Buie"? For example if I wished to sell the image?

Thank you for any clarification, and may I also have permission to publish your answer at Wikimedia Commons?

Hello, 84user!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

If we are talking about this: File:BWR_Mark_I_Containment_sketch.png Very good job!

But could you modify the drawing so that the piping inside the torus reaches below the water level? You'll see that in the two other diagrams, too. This is an essential feature of this wetwell or suppression chamber. It won't work otherwise. Thanks a lot. --93.132.23.82 20:24, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I'll put this into german WP right away. … Well, the more we get the more we want: It would be very helpful if one could see what exactly is the primary containment. Could you mark it by a slightly thicker colored line? That would be around the torus, the connecting pipe, and then around the drywell, i.e. the pear-shape, along the inside of the concrete wall. The line can be well traced in File:BWR Mark I Containment, diagram.png. That would be very nice. --93.132.30.68 18:40, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, I started to do a version with the primary containment outlined but then the image was further improved and then I noticed File:Nuclear BWR Boiling Water Reactor Mark 1.svg shows the primary containment a lot better. Anyway I have uploaded File:BWR Mark I Containment sketch primary.png based on an earlier image. -84user (talk) 13:03, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, please email me at the following link. Thank you. Joyson Noel Holla at me 11:34, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey dude, thanks a lot for taking the trouble to convert the video into OVG format. Actually, you converted the entire video, and the file size was 55.4 mb. In your email, you also stated that you were also converting the whole file into OGG format. If are doing so, then please email me the link. I will then upload both videos and obtain OTRS permission for both videos. Joyson Noel Holla at me 11:27, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, I converted first a 10 second sample and then the whole video, but I emailed you the link to the short video because the longer one had not finished uploading at that time. You may have found the longer one by clicking mediafire's "Browse user's Shared Files" link: I made both public. I meant OGV and not OGG. I wrote "Theora OGG" meaning the container format w:en:Ogg and "OGV" to show it is contains video, which is confusing I admit. The file extension is ".ogv", the container is OGG and the video stream inside is Theora. An "ogg" stream would be audio only, which was absent in the original video. I have just emailed you both links in any case: they have confusingly similar filenames: "Osho 1972 Birthday 10s seek index 0.26.ogv" (10 seconds) and "Osho 1972 Birthday seek index 268 0.26.ogv" (full 2 minutes). -84user (talk) 16:07, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

All right then. I will upload the entire vid, and send you the link. Joyson Noel Holla at me 12:20, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Joyson Noel Holla at me 08:51, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

In response to your email, I asked the YouTube user for the highest quality he had. He sent me a mediafire notification linking to the "VOB" format file and I downloaded and converted it as I described in my emails. Here are more details: The size of the VOB was 70,615,040 bytes. I converted the VOB to "Osho 1972 Birthday seek-index_268_0.26.ogv" whose size is 58,155,801 bytes. And I uploaded the ogv to mediafire for you to pick up. I have sent more details via Wikimedia email. -84user (talk) 18:01, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Convert to .ogg for Commons uploads edit

It took me a week to figure out that my Handbrake conversions were failing because of Matroska. I finally converted files with Super(c) and they worked fine. I noticed you had done a lot of work testing convertors. I was just wondering if the commons upload file types should mention no Matroska and Handbrake?--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:58, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's been two years since I did any serious testing with conversions. But were you trying to convert an AVI container to a Matroska container with theora video stream inside? I believe wikimedia still does not accept Matroska containers, regardless what the file extension has. The Special:Upload page has Permitted file types followed by "png, gif, jpg, jpeg, xcf, mid, ogg, ogv, svg, djvu, tiff, tif, oga." Otherwise I cannot recall getting Handbrake to convert anything to OGG containers, and I recorded all my results at User:84user/Video tests#Handbrake 0.9.4 tests, and I never thought to try uploading an MKV container file with a ".ogv" file name extension. I suspect an MKV file would cause wikimedia to fail somehow. It would be nice if one day wikimedia would accept both MKV and WebM, but we appear to be stuck with the limited OGG container for now. -84user (talk) 21:56, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

License request for the River Thames frost fairs Southwark engraving edit

Here is a partly anonymised version (email addresses redacted or protected against spam) of my email request for a CC license concerning the River Thames frost fairs Southwark engraving photographs:

From: (my email address)

To: (Richard Kindersley's email address)

Date: 2012-12-30

Subject: Creative Commons permission for photographs of Frost fair engraving

Dear Richard Kindersley,

I am a wikipedia editor (User:84user) who sometimes monitors the images used at Wikimedia's Commons repository of freely licensed images (http://commons.wikimedia.org/).

Two photographs of your Frost Fair engraving under the Southwark Bridge have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (linked below).

Would you consider issuing a Creative Commons license for just the parts of those two photographs that include your copyrighted work?

The two photographs are:

Photograph 1: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southwark_engraving_about_the_River_Thames_frost_fairs_1.jpg

Photograph 2: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southwark_engraving_about_the_River_Thames_frost_fairs_3.jpg

The reason Commons needs a free license is that (as far as I can determine, I am not a lawyer) the United Kingdom Freedom of Panorama laws (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_Kingdom) do not permit free use of images of two dimensional objects, such as engravings. The photographer has already given a free license for his contribution.

Please note that a free license for those parts of the photographs does not mean the engraving sculptural work itself becomes freely licensed.

However, such a free license would allow others to publish crops and other derivatives of those photographs, as long as they attribute the creators (photographer and sculptor in this case).

If you do graciously agree to this please email something like the following text

"
I confirm I am the copyright holder of the engraving shown in the derivative works listed below, and that I provide a license (Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, allowing derivative works and commercial use) for those parts as they appearing in the photographs.

Photograph 1: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southwark_engraving_about_the_River_Thames_frost_fairs_1.jpg

Photograph 2: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southwark_engraving_about_the_River_Thames_frost_fairs_3.jpg

Link to the Creative commons license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
"

to either of these addresses:

or

to my email address, and I will forward your reply to Wikimedia's permissions department.

On File:Ikaros solar sail key.svg edit

I stumbled upon this page: http://www.commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ikaros_solar_sail_key.svg.

The problem you face there is easy. Degroup all the elements of your image. Select all elements. Then object to path of all elements. And everything will be fine.

As you can see, I have already fixed the image Ikaros_solar_sail_key.svg. You are able to do the rest. Regards, Citypeek (talk) 08:52, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the heads-up. Yes, the workaround is to convert object to path. However, it appears a SVG library used by mediawiki has a long-standing bug (maybe this one: Mediazilla:17845) that makes some SVGs render incorrectly. I have since made two more test uploads purely for the purpose of tracking this bug. In my opinion mediawiki needs to fix this so that we users do not need to apply workarounds. -84user (talk) 11:49, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement edit

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Category:Non-free_screenshots edit

Category:Non-free_screenshots has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Deaths by age group fixed.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 02:24, 27 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
